To wear split knee black jeans and a leather biker jacket at 53?

Ticktacktock · 23/01/2016 13:53

I'm meeting people I haven't seen in a long while so tried on some new clobber. Dd said I looked fine, but I can't get over the fact I'm 53. Mutton and lamb spring to mind.

To give you something to go on,I'm 5ft 7 and a size 6 to 8 with hair just past my shoulders.

You don't have to be kind, just tell me what you think!

I'm 50 and wear exactly what you have described. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Wear what you want and rock the look!

hownottofuckup · 23/01/2016 15:45

Ripped jeans are fine, as long as you have good knees (I.e not saggy) but I agree with PP up thread that the overall look would be better with non ripped black skinnies anyway

Sparklingbrook · 23/01/2016 15:50

I am not a fan of ripped jeans and holey knees. BUT IMO if your 17 year old DD thinks you look good that for me is the biggest sign that you do IYKWIM.

Lurkedforever1 · 23/01/2016 16:30

You've still got the figure for it, so why not? I'd also strongly go with your Dds opinion, few 17yr olds would be keen on letting their mums out in public wearing anything they shouldn't, if they have a chance to prevent it.

Mistigri · 23/01/2016 16:34

I'm 51 and I'd wear that (well maybe not holes in trousers in winter, I feel the cold).

At my age I dress to please me not anyone else.

perpetuallybewildered · 23/01/2016 16:35

The fact that I don't like too obviously trendy clothes is probably colouring my view but my immediate reaction was to think you'd look like you were wearing your daughter's clothes. Then I read on and saw I was right. Sorry.

Ticktacktock · 23/01/2016 16:44

Yep, you're right. I don't like my knees, I think I'll go for non ripped skinnies and play safe. I'm trying to look too young.

Lass, you are so spot on, unbelievable.

Many thanks all xxx

Mutton is a piece of meat on a butcher's slab.

cariadlet · 23/01/2016 18:44

YANBU to wear your daughter's clothes if they fit you and she thinks they suit you.

You would have BU to wear ripped jeans. Glad you've gone for the non ripped skinnies. My 13 year old dd has some of the new style ripped jeans and I think they look ridiculous. The rip is far too clean and fake. I'm old enough to have worn the original ripped jeans in the 80s. They were pretty silly, but at least the rips were more naturally looking (half the time mine were so old and worn that the rips were totally genuine anyway).

YANBU to wear the leather jacket. Jeans and a leather jacket is a pretty timeless look - a cool classic. Age is irrelevant.

MistressDeeCee · 23/01/2016 19:46

Im 52 and still wear leather jackets, my style is quite trendy in general. I draw the line at split knee jeans tho I think they look awful especially if you have potato knees poking out. They don't even flatter slimmies. However, if YOU think they look fine then go for it. We are at the age not to give a flying fuck what people think. I still go to concerts, also a big funk & soul fan and find loads of people my age at events, and they're not exactly frumpily dressed! I love how as women we can express more nowadays and aren't necessarily made to feel we have to hurtle towards shopping in 50 plus catalogues and wear sensible shoes at all times (mind you mid/block heels are my saviour, my feet gave up on real heels years ago!)

Wear what you like. & do take your DDs opinion into account. DD's that age are notorious for wanting mum to look good so if she says you look good Id be inclined to believe her

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2016 19:52

I'm 51 and like wearing leather jackets with jeans. I wouldn't wear the split knee jeans though. But if you are comfortable wearing them and they make you feel good, then go for it.

Ticktacktock · 24/01/2016 10:39

After reading more replies, its definitely not going to be ripped knee jeans. The folk I'm meeting are a judgemental lot, and I would just be fodder for them. I don't know why I didn't see that earlier, it takes you lot to point it out to me.

Even dd said she sees what you mean.

That was why I came here anyway, cos you always tell it as it is. So many thanks Flowers

Sounds like the kind of stuff Gemma wore in Sons of Anarchy and I thought she looked great.

bigTillyMint · 24/01/2016 10:50

Biker jacket = classic

Ripped at the knee jeans = teenager-wear

Smart skinny jeans - if you are a size 6 you will look amazing.

LittleCandle · 24/01/2016 11:00

Clothes should be fun! If you like them then wear them. If your DD says you suit them, believe her. Young people are pretty good at letting you know if you're embarrassing them! I work in a clothes shop and am often the most 'outrageously' dressed of all the staff and I am about the oldest in the shop at almost your age. Who cares? Go for it!

multivac · 24/01/2016 11:04

What are you going to put on your feet? I reckon that's proper make or break for the outfit in this context...

Flossyfloof · 24/01/2016 11:07

Yes, not the split knee jeans. Nor the jacket - I am desperate for one so you should give it to me. I am 55 and would definitely wear the jacket, like most others I just don't like the split knee thing.
Please don't tell your old mates that you are still a rock chick though.

Flossyfloof · 24/01/2016 11:09

Oh and btw let them judge away! If you are worried about that I will lend you my twin set if you like.

Bunbaker · 24/01/2016 11:13

At 57 my knees are beyond redemption, so I would wear the biker jacket, but with undamaged jeans.

I have a lovely oxblood leather biker jacket that I still wear and will continue to wear, so there.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2016 14:40

Oxblood biker sounds amazing. That's the next one I want - already have black, grey and chocolate brown.

Bunbaker · 24/01/2016 17:14

I bought it in TK Maxx several years ago and it is as good as new. But I'm not heavy on my clothes and have items that are over 20 years old.

Doublebubblebubble · 24/01/2016 17:17

Good for you 😊 op x you should wear what you feel comfortable with x

ChampaleSocialist · 24/01/2016 17:20

Do it. Literally yolo.
Me and my friends have gone back to our punk days, I'll be dead in 20 years so stuff it.

MamaLazarou · 24/01/2016 17:22

Wear whatever you like and what makes you feel good!

Not a fan of skinny or ripped jeans myself, but if you love them and feel good in them, go for it!

iPaid · 24/01/2016 17:24

I would hope that by the time I reach my fifties, I wouldn't give a toss what other people think.....

Why wait til your 50s, what's stopping you from being that way now?
