I joined an energy company when I moved house last year. Despite providing them with an opening meter reading and monthly meter readings they used an estimate.
Despite me contacting them and informing them that the meter reading for gas was incorrect they failed to put it right.
It is now almost 6 months later they have decided they are not happy with the initial meter reading and have raised a dispute with my previous supplier and issued me with a bill for £500.
As this was not my fault, am I being unreasonable to not accept £50 as a goodwill gesture or should I just take it and shut up?

Ha it's not first utility is it? They're a total fucking nightmare.

If the £50 is their first offer then push for more.

kappadelta · 22/01/2016 15:35

No not first utility but £50 was the second offer.

Scottish Power?

Ridingthegravytrain · 22/01/2016 17:32

Yanbu

I second it being Scottish power!

NorthernRosie · 22/01/2016 17:52

I took up a similar matter with British Gas and ended up getting £200 off.

kappadelta · 22/01/2016 18:24

It's Sainsburys energy 😳

Hang on, you got an offer from Scottish Power? The same people who suddenly charged me for fifteen months' electricity in November and told me it was my fault for not having noticed that they'd only been billing me for gas? I'd bite their bloody hand off for £50...

hefzi · 22/01/2016 18:28

Ah, cross post: no experience with Sainsbury's but I've left Scottish as a result, and am insisting on paying them by installments...

mommy2ash · 22/01/2016 18:57

Do you actually owe this 500 pounds? Did you under pay your previous provider? What was wrong with your meter reading?

kappadelta · 22/01/2016 19:01

They over estimated my meter reading when I started. When I queried it they said it's ok we have overcharged you for electricity so we will wait for you to catch up with gas.
Despite this I continued to supply correct readings every month.

Hefzi - similar happened to me with SP - fortunately I noticed and kept on at them. It took them almost two years to bill me for electricity....

Ridingthegravytrain · 22/01/2016 19:27

Heftzi we are in the same boat too. And paying in very small instalments over 4 years. Didn't bill is for 6 months and our account was showing us in credit during that time. Which we screen shot. Apparently that was our fault somehow and the ombudsman were spectacularly shit

Owllady · 22/01/2016 19:29

They are all like this
