AIBU to think you NEED butter on your toast before the jam??

DP handed me toast at the weekend that didn't have butter on before the jam. He claims it makes no difference but I argued you need it to soften the toast before the jam goes on. He offered to put some butter on top of the jam because 'surely it's the same thing'.

AIBU or is he completely and utterly in the wrong and frankly a bit weird?

Butter before jam, every time.

I could never be with a man who did this. Grin.

Ltb

Ltb

It's the way I'm leaning tbh...

it's well known that the good combination that tastes best is fat/sugar. Stand to reason that jam(sugar) without butter (fat) is only half a job...

FlopIsMyParentingGuru · 20/01/2016 12:02

"Food" not "good"

The only time you have dry toast and jam in my house is after a stomach upset.

whois · 20/01/2016 12:12

Ugh DP eats his toast like that with no butter. Wrong Very VERY wrong.

Shh don't tell my kids this, I use jam when I've run out of butter.

I also find it easier to prevent contaminating the jam.

Doublebubblebubble · 20/01/2016 12:20

Yep!!!! My dh is a fuss pot hates dairy so just puts jam on toast!! Yuck! It HAS to have butter

YakTriangle · 20/01/2016 12:23

Eurgh. That would be just sticky and chewy.
There must be buttery toasty deliciousness.
It is the law.

BeardedBear · 20/01/2016 12:27

Butter on toast = bleurgh. You never put butter on toast, it makes the toast go soggy. The whole point of toasting is to make a nice crunchy layer on the top. YABTotallyU

coffeetasteslikeshit · 20/01/2016 12:29

YANBU. DS1 eats toast and jam with no butter. I'm thinking of sending him back...

Coffeelove · 20/01/2016 12:31

YABU .... No need for butter when you have a light layer of jam ... Delish!! Just need to convince my DH who slathers an inch of butter with or without jam

blamethecat · 20/01/2016 12:35

Another one with a DS who eats toast with jam and no butter, he gets quite cross if I butter his toast. Odd child.

x2boys · 20/01/2016 12:37

Dh hates butter and margerine so all his toast is like this or completely dryHmm his sandwiches are too.

weeblueberry · 20/01/2016 12:37

Envy at everyone who doesn't put butter on first.

Sorry but this is very much an AIBU but no I'm most certainly not being unreasonable despite what any poster might say to the contrary.

Is he German? my German DP says you never put butter with something sweet, but me, being British, always have butter with jam, nutella.

weeblueberry · 20/01/2016 12:52

Nah, British. No excuses really.

Toast Butter Jam. YANBU! Butter in beans as well, makes it creamier. Neither DH nor 4 children would ever eat butter with their jam on toast, they've always turned their noses up at it. That's probably why they're much slimmer than me ...

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 20/01/2016 13:01

Unless your Jenny Argueta in the Railway Children ("You may have butter and Jam but not both") then you do need butter!

Stormtreader · 20/01/2016 13:17

I dont put butter on either, there are a few of us about :) Then again, I put a decent amount of jam on, that toast KNOWS its been jammed alright! Cant be doing with people who just put a light smear on.

wtffgs · 20/01/2016 13:26

LTB!!

DD made me toast and jam no butter to cheer me up as I have been poorly. She's only 8 so I ate it - not enjoyable!

Shodan · 20/01/2016 13:30

Ds1 never has butter on his toast.

He has one slice with just marmalade and other with (I can hardly bear to type this) Marmite.

Marmite. On its own. In the middle of the slice.

I don't know where I went wrong. I brought him up properly, I swear- loads of butter, then a thin scraping of Marmite-but still the boy defies not only me but all sense of propriety and good taste. Sad

And his father was a Top Chef in a Top Restaurant too. Sad Sad
