AIBU to think you NEED butter on your toast before the jam??

DP handed me toast at the weekend that didn't have butter on before the jam. He claims it makes no difference but I argued you need it to soften the toast before the jam goes on. He offered to put some butter on top of the jam because 'surely it's the same thing'.

AIBU or is he completely and utterly in the wrong and frankly a bit weird?

Butter = toast lube . You need it between the toast and jam to help it all slide in/down better .

Toast with...
Jam, butter.
Peanut butter, no butter.
Nutella, no butter.
Sardines, butter.
Cheese, no butter.
Beans, butter.

Only jam here, but I do like butter and peanut butter together, just to be awkward.

MrsHathaway · 20/01/2016 14:02

Obviously butter is required on toast in the absence of something else fatty (soft cheese, pâté or similar). Jam is not fatty so butter is needed.

The salt/sweet combination is heavenly.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 14:11

No butter ever . Makes me heave.
No margarine either.

I have never eaten either in sandwiches which is difficult if I used to buy them (I don't eat 'bread' bread now so that's solved one problem Wink )

My sandwiches used to fall apart though without the glue, and things like tomatoes make the bread soggy............ (don't miss them really thinking back)

YABU

Crunchy toast with jam and no butter.

GingerLDN · 20/01/2016 15:30

Someone once buttered my jam on toast when I was young, I was almost sick. Gives me a wobbly jaw just thinking about it!

VulcanWoman · 20/01/2016 15:43

Hot buttered toast with jam, oh the best.

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2016 15:47

I can't eat jam on bread or toast. I eat jam in cakes and on scones. Jam on bread is revolting, and mixed with butter even more so. Bleurgh.

Toast has butter only in Sparklingworld. Spread into the corners mind.

ThereIsIron · 20/01/2016 15:47

They only situation I can think of where you wouldn't immediately butter toast before applying further preserves or condiments is if you're going to melt cheese on it. Hell, I even butter my toast before applying generous layers of crunchy peanut butter and strawberry jam (in that order) Grin

HeartShapedBox · 20/01/2016 16:06

One or the other, both together is just rank 😷

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/01/2016 16:09

Jam is evil food.

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2016 16:10

Marmalade is even eviler.

DesertOrDessert · 20/01/2016 16:21

Shodan DS2 asked for Marmite sandwiches for school lunch today, without butter. It's really difficult to spread on its own. How did you do it without ripping the bread to shreads?

Hot toast, melted butter, jam if you must, but Bovril is preferred.

Shodan · 20/01/2016 16:38

Desert I used to load the knife and sort of stab bits on. Like dot-to-dot.

It made me cry every day Sad Sad

(slight exaggeration. But only slight)

CremeEggThief · 20/01/2016 16:41

YABU. DS never puts butter/spread on his. I do, but I don't with scones.

PainAuChocolat23 · 20/01/2016 16:41

Even worse than the jam before butter is when my gran tries to put butter on before chocolate spread when i make toast Confused that is just all sorts of disgusting and wrong

LaurieFairyCake · 20/01/2016 16:45

There are so many non butter weirdos on this thread !!!

Where the friff have you all come from ?!?

OurBlanche · 20/01/2016 17:03

Well, I come from a place where jam and toast is a completely different meal from buttered toast. There is something slightly crispy about the edge of the jam, where it is thinnest on very hot toast...

I don't have butter in sandwiches either, but do have it between bread and marmite Smile

Amummyatlast · 20/01/2016 17:57

Butter and jam should never, ever, be on toast at the same time. Jam only or butter only. Butter and jam together...yuk, no!

AchyMcAcherson · 20/01/2016 18:01

Squeezy marmite is your friend when you want to spread it on butter free bread / toast.
Although why you'd want the nod that is beyond me. Lots of butter is the way to go. Unless you're having peanut butter or Nutella. Then you don't need it.

bumbleymummy · 20/01/2016 18:01

I don't mind it without butter but if you are going to put it on then yes, it needs to go on first. Butter on top of jam would just be Envy

Frazzled2207 · 20/01/2016 18:11

Toast, butter, jam definitely.
But my dh thinks I'm a weirdo for putting butter on before chocolate spread. Am I?

batshitlady · 20/01/2016 18:12

Butter before everything, including peanut butter.....
