My Dad (lives in Spain) does that with olive stones. Sucks them free of olive flesh and pops the stone back in the bowl of olives... not the plate it is sat on.

Drives me absolutely mad. But then again, he gets what he wants - all the bleeding olives!!!

Provide a 2nd bowl to put the empty shells in like most people do, and empty it daily. Why would you want them around the edge of the bowl on the plate?

If they're roasted in lemon-juice and salt it's normal to suck the shells.

The olive thing sounds yukky. ...like someone I saw at a party dipping a breadstick into hummous, biting off the end, and dipping the bitten end back into the hummous!

No... there is a place for the empties, it's bleeding obvious, just not a second bowl. The place for sucked olive stones, salted pistachio shells, etc is in the plate under the bowl.

There are special pistachio bowls with their own saucers? I just use a cereal bowl, lol, or if being posh, a glass ice cream bowl (plus one for the empties).

Isn't it usual to provide another bowl for the empties instead, and make it obvious that that is what it is for?

Scoop all the shells out and put them on the plate.

Remember when you used to be able to buy pistachios that were dyed red? They'd make your fingers all pink.

That is very close to double dipping. I saw an experiment on double dipping, the amount of germs that get in the dip are disgusting.

If he's making noises as well with the sucking I would be feeling very stabby, I would test him with something simmering on the hob, if he stirs it then bin him off.
