to not go to the N.E this weekend to watch a football match?

We live down South (Berks). DH supports Sunderland. At Christmas, a friend sent him 4 free, good, tickets to watch Sunderland play Bournemouth (in Sunderland) this weekend. He asked me to go, and I said OK. My 2 DC would come too.

But, it's cold, snowy, icy, a fecking long way (5 hours one-way), ALL up the motorway (which I have a phobia about; I can't drive on them anymore since I had 2 panic attacks)... I really don't want to go.

So, I suggested he asked his friends. He said, "They won't want to trek up to the north-east to see a match of a team they don't support, in a sport they're not interested in."

I said, "But I feel like that!"

He said, "Yes, but I'm not married to my friends."

I looked into train tickets, but it'd cost £250 for us all to go, and I'd have to pay (he hates the train).

Another reason I'm feeling off about it, is we got free tickets to Champneys as a wedding present. 2 nights all-inclusive. Every time I suggested we go, he hemmed and hawed with one excuse after another, until he FINALLY admitted he really didn't want to go. So I've arranged to go with someone else to let him off the hook.

He's a lovely DH, but I don't want to trek to the NE this weekend to shiver at a footy match. AIBU? He's already paid £60ish for a family hotel room for all of us.

UPDATE: His car's looking like it might be on the blink (and mine is currently out of action), so I don't think we're going. GET IN THERE! He doesn't even look that bothered, so all my guilt was for nothing. Hmm

Thank you, angels of mercy who control car maintenance!

I also spoke to my parents when I saw them this morning. Mum said, "I'd just say you don't want to. Bloody stupid idea, in the ice and snow... Ridiculous."

:)

Ah but look at the lovely weather you'll be missing, grey clouds can be very appealing at least it isn't raining or snowing...yet!

Nah! You've had a lucky escape, it's cold grey and miserable in not so sunny Sunderland. Grin

FTM!! Grin

IAmAPaleontologist · 20/01/2016 15:37

Glad it looks like you are escaping! I'm on your side, when dh wants to see rugby matches he goes by himself/with ds1/his dad/his brother. I stay at home where I am warm and dry.

IAmAPaleontologist · 20/01/2016 15:40

Plus I'm near Durham and it is cold and miserable.

ShowYourSeams · 20/01/2016 15:40

I'm on the NE coast and it's been 4° here all week, that's practically summer weather by our standards. You should definitely come! (And don't forget your flipflops!)

I'm about 5 mins from the SoL. I'll drape a MN scarf in the front window and stick a loo brush on the step so you know where to knock

PlaymobilPirate · 20/01/2016 21:00

MrsSmith I'm about 5 minutes from the SoL too!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 20/01/2016 21:17

His car's fine. Gulp.

You lot are making me want to come now! :)

The Sunderland supporters are awesome, really, really funny and lively.

Okay, that's just really freaky to know that two other people on this thread live only around 5 minutes away from me! Shock

YouTheCat · 20/01/2016 21:50

I lived in Fulwell for a few years when I was a kid. Used to go swimming in the Newcastle Road baths that they demolished recently.

PlaymobilPirate · 20/01/2016 22:28

I'm 2 minutes from Newcastle Road baths!

MuddlingMackem · 20/01/2016 22:48

Oh, man! Really freaky!

PlaymobilPirate · 20/01/2016 23:00

Very! It's a small world 😀 we've probably passed each other on the street!

MunchMunch · 21/01/2016 01:03

I'm about 5 mins away from the SOL but in the other direction by the sounds of it.

GarlicBake · 21/01/2016 01:34

Go. Just go because it's something different and you'll be in a fine position to extract payment in meals, drinks & treats. Am bloody astonished it's going to be 6° in Sunderland on Saturday - don't forget that wind slicing its way straight from the Steppes to NE England, though, leaving all normal people cowed & whimpering slightly - while Geordies & Mackems wrap up warm in a short-sleeved t-shirt. (Yes, I went to uni Up There.)

Wear a lot of big clothes. Take valium or codeine or something to ease the long drive. Stay overnight and take the kids to Marske or Redcar beach on Sunday. Enjoy the Northern welcome. Have fun!

SayonaraSashu · 21/01/2016 03:11

Go!! Then go out for cocktails and a meal after Smile And make him take you shopping/do something of your choice after!

SayonaraSashu · 21/01/2016 03:11

And a lovely Sunday brunch!

Ah I'm jealous now!!

thewavesofthesea · 21/01/2016 06:04

Go! I've been to the SoL and had a great time even though they lost You might be cheaper to go to Durham and get the bus through: (the number 20 Smile) And look into a family railcard; dramatically reduces the cost of traveling as a family.

HelpfulChap · 21/01/2016 06:11

Its something different to do and the kids will really enjoy it - does turning them into Makes count as child abuse? ;-)

I do a 5 hour return trip to see my team about 20 times a season so obviously I am on your DHs side!

P.S don't forget your bananas (see other football thread.........).

MuddlingMackem · 21/01/2016 08:14

Oh my! We 'near the SoL' lot might have to have a Mumsnet local meet up in Miss Tina's. Grin

MLGs · 21/01/2016 08:20

I realise this is kind of over now, but I didn't understand why you would have to drive when he has can drive too. Also why you would have to pay for train. Is going to bug me if I don't ask and did rtft, although may have missed it among footie jokes.

muddymary · 21/01/2016 08:25

I live 10 mins away from our football ground and I wouldn't even do that journey when dh got free tickets. If you don't give a shit about football, it's a very long 90 minutes sitting out in the cold!

thewavesofthesea · 21/01/2016 09:07

waves another Sunderland mum here. Love Miss Tina's!
(We will prob find out we already know each other!)
