AIBU?

To think MIL is wrong and DM is right

DH and I have had a stupid argument over who's DM is right about freezing milk and bread.

So I like to have a bit of milk and bread in the freezer just encase we run out or if it snows. I don't like driving in the snow and DH might be at work when I want a cup of tea.

MIL was doing a noisy in our freezer and saw packets of 2 slices of bread and individual pints of semi skimmed milk.

MIL told DH that a) semi skimmed milk shouldn't be frozen b)freezing 2 slices of bread individually rather than a whole loaf makes the bread tough.

When DH told me I disagreed and said thats how my DM does it and he has never complained about the bread. Its in 2s so you only take what you need rather than the whole loaf.

DH is now in a huff that I always think my DM is right she is and MIL is wrong. My MIL has some daft ideas when it comes to food. For example you need to throw out the whole block of cheese is it isn't eaten within 3 days but will happily eat opened chicken after its used buy date sometimes a week after the use by date even if its grey and kind of smells!

So aibu to think that yes my DM is right.

I'm still admiring your easygoing reaction to someone prowling into your kitchen arrangements and then passing judgement, TBH. For that alone, YANBU.

You got married at 16?. Im impressed.

Mind you dh was 28 when I was 16 and it would have been frowned upon.

I have nothing useful to add, but you have made me want a plain 'breed' toaster!

Humpty, I don't wind him up. I noise him up - there is a hugh difference. Deliberately winding someone up is a pita wankerist thing to do to anyone let alone someone you love. I joke/banter/tease/mince about the odd/daff/muppetist things that DMIL does. Similarly DH does the same regarding my DB and his odd behaviour.

Both he and MIL know it is done with love and affection as explained above. I don't do it to MIL as she doesn't appreciate it. I do however do it to FIL who does.

Just about everything can be frozen.

I don't know why you even need to discuss it. Just do what you want, I freeze both, but I wouldn't bother justifying it- I would just say not to freeze them if you don't want to.

MIL has does it since DH and got married 17 years ago. We lived with her the first 2 years as DH was recoving from a serious car accident. She does it to everyone in everyone's home even my DMs. I don't know why but its like a compulsion. I tried to stop her but it only made her very stressed about visiting as she would be fighting the urge to do so. So DH and I compromised. She doesn't have a key so is never in the house alone and she is not allowed in our bedroom. It has a lock for when she is in our home and goes upstairs to the bathroom or stays over.

I wouldn't freeze milk but that is a personal preference - I would much rather have a couple of cartons of long life in the cupboard for emergencies. As for the bread, we freeze whole loaves but that is as we go through so much sliced for packings, toast etc. Pitta breads I freeze in bags of two - enough for me and the baby at lunch time. If we used less sliced bread would freeze in packs of two to save waste.

Yes your Mum is right and his is insane if she eats chicken that's gone off.Never ever let her feed you chicken that could be off(if your pregnant or breastfeeding)the same goes for any children you have.

How about pointing out to DH that it isn't a competition between the mothers, it's a very simple issue about whether he personally thinks there's anything wrong with defrosted semi-skimmed or bread. If he's never noticed a problem it follows that there isn't one, therefore you can carry on in exactly the same way as you did before.

I think that your MIL has a point about the bread.

But do you always think that your mum is right?

Do you ever think that MIL might have a point?

I never thought of freezing bread in twos, it's a great idea for emergency toast.

Milk doesn't tend to stick around long here much either, but years ago when I was single, hadn't much money, and lived in central London in a flat on my own, I would buy 8 pints of skimmed for 50p from the cheap supermarket round the corner and feeze them.k

Just discovered you can freeze banana bread. Was reading Jack Monroe and found this
