To think MIL is wrong and DM is right

DH and I have had a stupid argument over who's DM is right about freezing milk and bread.

So I like to have a bit of milk and bread in the freezer just encase we run out or if it snows. I don't like driving in the snow and DH might be at work when I want a cup of tea.

MIL was doing a noisy in our freezer and saw packets of 2 slices of bread and individual pints of semi skimmed milk.

MIL told DH that a) semi skimmed milk shouldn't be frozen b)freezing 2 slices of bread individually rather than a whole loaf makes the bread tough.

When DH told me I disagreed and said thats how my DM does it and he has never complained about the bread. Its in 2s so you only take what you need rather than the whole loaf.

DH is now in a huff that I always think my DM is right she is and MIL is wrong. My MIL has some daft ideas when it comes to food. For example you need to throw out the whole block of cheese is it isn't eaten within 3 days but will happily eat opened chicken after its used buy date sometimes a week after the use by date even if its grey and kind of smells!

So aibu to think that yes my DM is right.

I recently bought small loaves for freezing, they were 2 for £1, can't remember which supermarket.
Might that be a compromise?
It's easier to fit in small or divided loaves the into the freezer. Or a Scottish plain loaf but that is harder to fit into a toaster.
I find croissants, rolls, bagels, pittas, sandwich thins, scones all freeze well.
I had an aunt who used to bake and freeze cakes. They were yummy.

I keep some of those part baked rolls in case we get snowed in-highly unlikely as I can walk to the nearset shops. I also keep dried milk just in case.

Oh and cheese can be frozen as can butter.
I'm sure I read a recipie that said grated frozen butter mixed well into dough for making scones.

We freeze bread and milk after our big shop. Have done for years. Our work patterns are such that we I do one big shop each week. We freeze enough bread and milk for the week ahead and its always been fine.
Just interested, why is your mil allowed to go rifling in your freezer?
Hell would freeze over before my mil was allowed near my kitchen appliances. Especially at the moment GrinGrin

You are always right aren't you. About every thing. Every thing. Relentlessly, unequivocally, pointlessly right.

What's a Scottish plain loaf, please?

I don't freeze bread- there's only two of us so I buy the half size loaves and they survive just long enough to not have to be thrown out. Milk- I buy the filtered milk and always make sure I have some UHT cartons in the Zombie cabinet.

In my school HE lessons many years ago we were told you could freeze homogenised full fat milk. It had to be homogenised and the full fat defrosted better

You are right and you MIL is a nosy beggar. Milk and bread freeze fine. Tell your Dh to get over it.

More importantly, what kind of cheese is she buying and discarding? If it's bog standard cheddar she can go right ahead but if it's nice cheese then the woman is clearly a culinary monster and you can discount her food related opinions by default.

A Scottish Plain loaf is shorter in width but a bit taller than a pan loaf. Its also got a slightly different texture.

Ah, so what I term local bakery bread, not factory bread.

Thanks ratspeaker.

I always freeze milk and we have skimmed. Also freeze bread in small batches too. Never had any issue with either

That link has a wee picture in it .
You'll see how as it's a bit thinner it fits in easier to the freezer but tends to stick up out the toaster.
Of course I could put it under the grill to toast.
Or use a toasting fork in front of the fire.

I still call a pan loaf of bread a half loaf.
And doing the shopping is going the messages.

Your dm is right. I've never noticed bread being tough when frozen in slices.

Why not freeze semi-skimmed? We often do it. Freezing whole milk is a bit of a pain, well thawing it is a bit of a pain! But once it's done it's fine. Easiest is skimmed, but dh won't have it in the house Grin

Not only do bread and milk freeze well, but you can (I'm going to get flamed for this), defrost them and freeze them again. And cheese - I do this all the time!

My method with my home made bread after slicing (bit anorakish, I admit), is to separate the slices with strips of baking parchment - which can be used over and over, of course. Then it's dead easy to take out what you want.

The chicken thing is a bit gross! Shock

MIL was doing a noisy in our freezer

Is that a real phrase?! I've never heard that before!!

and I like noising my DH about it.

And again! Is it a regional saying? I am intrigued misses the point of the thread!!

I imagine it was meant to be 'nosy'?

Report
TrinityForce · 18/01/2016 21:16

Oh, maybe not then!

Maybe it's like "pizza pasta restaurant"

Roll I'm for Glasgow so use a lot of Scots, Weggie and Lanarkshire phases. Folk aren't noisy they do a noisy. Noising someone up is winding someone up in a playful bantery way. My family primarily communicate in this way. Its a sign if love, affection and acceptance. I was Grin when my DSis's new BF was cheeky to me over Christmas just like one of the family aka Chewin the Fat.

Casimir I'm not always right but my DM is. Wink

I have been hankering after a toaster that fits full plain bread slices for a while.

MIL chucks out block of chedder after three days.if I'm in her house I bin raid them of my house. I am trying to get her to buy them wee single portion cheeses like the Cathedral City ones instead.

So you'd say 'noising someone up' but 'doing a nosy'?!

Thanks for the explanation!

Your mum is right, your MIL is weird, and your DH is behaving oddly.

I have to freeze bread and milk because I don't eat either and need to have it handy if someone drops in. Unless a friend fancies walking on the wild side with almond milk and buckwheat crackers.

I freeze goats and sheep cheese for myself and some kinds freeze better than others.

I do love my MIL but she is a bit crackers and I like noising my DH about it.

You deliberately like winding your DH up about his mother?

Grow up!
