AIBU?

To think MIL is wrong and DM is right

DH and I have had a stupid argument over who's DM is right about freezing milk and bread.

So I like to have a bit of milk and bread in the freezer just encase we run out or if it snows. I don't like driving in the snow and DH might be at work when I want a cup of tea.

MIL was doing a noisy in our freezer and saw packets of 2 slices of bread and individual pints of semi skimmed milk.

MIL told DH that a) semi skimmed milk shouldn't be frozen b)freezing 2 slices of bread individually rather than a whole loaf makes the bread tough.

When DH told me I disagreed and said thats how my DM does it and he has never complained about the bread. Its in 2s so you only take what you need rather than the whole loaf.

DH is now in a huff that I always think my DM is right she is and MIL is wrong. My MIL has some daft ideas when it comes to food. For example you need to throw out the whole block of cheese is it isn't eaten within 3 days but will happily eat opened chicken after its used buy date sometimes a week after the use by date even if its grey and kind of smells!

So aibu to think that yes my DM is right.

But why would you go to al that effort when you can just freeze it as one? I just take slices off as I need them. Don't even need to prise them apart, just give the loaf a quick bang on the countertop and the slices fall apart.

I can't believe nobody else is outraged at the waste of perfectly good cheese 😱. YANBU on all counts.

There's an incredibly weird dynamic here - your mil pokes around in your freezer, and then criticises your freezing techniques to your husband, for him to pass on to you?

Isn't the obvious response that your DH is perfectly at liberty to freeze milk and bread the way he was taught by his own mother growing up? Unless she didn't teach her son any of the basics of cooking and freezing food, because that's a DIL's job ...?

I never freeze milk or bread, of course. I leap over the gate and milk a cow from the herd in the field next door and bake my own sourdough daily. Not.

We have a special button on our toaster for frozen bread.

I had some defrosted proper whole milk this morning. 'Twas lovely, and very welcome!

If you freeze a couple of slices of bread for aaaages they'll both end up a bit on the stale side, just like the end slice will if you freeze a whole loaf for ages. Unless the loaf has been squashed slices come off a loaf easily enoug - we always freeze sliced bread. If it's been squashed though, no chance. The slices interlock and won't separate.

Where's that poster gone who was asking the other day about the meaning of the phrase "too much time on your hands?" Grin

Yes we have managed to squeeze some bickering and Mumsetting in today between visiting my DF in hospital, visiting FIL at his hospice, having further test to determine whether I need a further procedure following my heart attack 8 months ago as well as working today. Grin

DH has admitted he needed to let off some steam so choose to use this as a way to poke d'bear. DH is now off to work his 12 18 hours in ED.

I fully admit DH and I are unreasonable for bickering over childish shit.

I freeze almost everything. Bread and milk is fine. FWIW as a student I froze bread in two's AND cheese sandwiches for toastie making. They were my fast food and stopped my housemates eating them Grin

My gran noses in my fridge. Often complains about my system (I use cheap plastic baskets and meal plan 3-4days ahead. 1 basket contains 1 meal) that my fridge can't possibly be clean and that my salad drawers shouldn't have all those condiments in Hmm

I freeze milk al the time, but I agree about the tough bread. That said DM does it too and hers defrosts fine. Is it because she freezes and defrosts the whole loaf still in the bag I wonder?

Haven't read the whole thread but, while you can freeze semi-skimmed, full-fat freezes better. No opinion on bread.

While not the point of the thread... I never once considered freezing bread in 2's and I think this is a brilliant idea! I always buy bread but we never use it all and I end up throwing out half a loaf.

I'm really quite excited to try this saddo
