Fed up with Surrey and all the people here my mil and her family are all dysfunctional nightmares. I want to move far far away and start over freshere. Is it so wrong to just want to move far away for a better life?

I live on the Yorkshire coast and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It's an amazing place to bring a family up in.

I bloody love Yorkshire. I am originally from Nottinghamshire but all of my family are from Yorkshire (I'm the odd one out!) and I never got why Yorkshire folk always banged on about how amazing it is. That was until I moved here, and then I realised. It's just so beautiful, and there's so much going on and everyone is just lovely and friendly. I've never been treat like an 'outsider' as someone upthread mentioned. I've lived here a few years but recently moved a bit more rurally and I've made so many new friends already.

A lot of people seem to have the idea that the whole of Yorkshire is a bit backwards and behind other places in the country but it has everything you could ever want. I'm a big fan of art, music, food etc. and the cities here are fabulous for the stuff I'm interested in.

Yorkshire is a big place - where are you fancying?

That north/south education map tells you very very little. Its a quick snapshot taking into account raw marks and then lumping huge areas together,

The reality is different totally., and it is very much dependent on individual schools, and quite often its also dependent on the intake of a year group.

There are many very good schools in the North.
Likewise there are many very poor schools in the South.

Beverley is lovely, friendly and regularly makes it into those lists of places with great quality of life.

Take the Beverley is miles from anywhere comment with a pinch of salt. It may be further in distance but less traffic means less so in time. I meet a work colleague in York and it takes her longer to get there from Leeds. If I have to go to the Leeds office it only takes me 15 mins longer than colleagues who drive in from Ilkley.

Sheffield is a nice city- small enough to feel quite friendly and lots of green spaces.

If jobs weren't an issue I'd live near Whitby- would love to be near the sea!

YDANBU. I have lived in 8 counties (including Surrey) and Yorkshire is definitely the loveliest and the one where I'll be staying. Also, annoying family members are much easier to cope with if the are 100+ miles away. Good luck if you do move up and you'll be very welcome.
