AIBU to want to move to Yorkshire

Fed up with Surrey and all the people here my mil and her family are all dysfunctional nightmares. I want to move far far away and start over freshere. Is it so wrong to just want to move far away for a better life?

It's the greatest place in the world. Fantastic scenery, beautiful coastline, thriving cities, picture-postcard villages, the loveliest people in the land... But don't tell everyone, they'll all want to come.

Would say all the same things about Wales (but I don't want them all coming here either. Grin)

Shockers · 18/01/2016 18:26

I love Yorkshire 😊 (My grandparents lived there).

I also love Lancashire (I live here), and Cumbria (used to live there).

The North is pretty darn great!

universallyhated · 18/01/2016 18:27

Yes, Yorkshire is a bloody awful place to live, some of my unhappiest times have been when I lived in Yorkshire. Everybody was so nosy and judgemental.

This! It's the best county in the land and I wouldn't live anywhere else. And I live in one of the most run down parts but I'm ten minutes from beautiful countryside in every direction, housing is cheap and the Yorkshire sense of humour is ace. I'm also 45 mins from the Peak District (which is in the second best county 😉).

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/01/2016 18:28

Just make sure you're 'running to' rather than 'running from'. As has already been mentioned, you can never entirely leave family behind unless you leave no forwarding address and change your phone numbers and the buggers might want to visit. And stay with you.

But having said all that, your reasons to want to move, (even without those DH-family-related) are all good reasons. And I luffs Yorkshire.

NKFell · 18/01/2016 18:29

That's why I'm saying move to Yorkshire- they can have all of our second home owners too!! bloody tourists

NickyEds · 18/01/2016 18:29

Would you be able to get decent jobs?

If so then yes, move. I live in Yorkshire (and have all of my life) and I will never live anywhere elseSmile.

StitchesInTime · 18/01/2016 18:32

Yorkshire's great.

As long as you can get a decent job there, YANBU.

plantsitter · 18/01/2016 18:32

I grew up in Yorkshire but now live in London. Spend some time there in the winter before you move. The weather makes a surprising difference to your mood. (Well, my mood actually).

wasonthelist · 18/01/2016 18:37

everyone should move to yorkshire it's lovely and the houses cost a ton less and everyone is friendly.

Shhhhhhh whilst this is true, it won't be if the place fills up with oftcomdens.

Sallyingforth · 18/01/2016 18:37

Yorkshire is wonderful. Life is better all round. Even the water tastes better.

PinkSlipperQueen · 18/01/2016 18:39

Dh could get a job there it would pay a bit less but our mortgage would be much less!

CakeNinja · 18/01/2016 18:49

Oi, what's with all the Surrey bashing? Angry
I like it here Hmm

isseywithcats · 18/01/2016 18:54

i moved to halifax 19 years ago and love living here within an hour of my house is the yorkshire dales, blackpool, liverpool, manchester, whitby, filey scarborough, leeds city centre. hebden bridge a two bedroom house near us is around £85000 in a nice part £100000 for a three bedroom, lots of lovely country pubs and really pretty villages

IJustLostTheGame · 18/01/2016 19:05

Depends on where you live. I've been in Yorkshire for over 10 years now.
Leeds: got some shitty bits but everywhere has. Very vibrant. Great if you like shopping and bars and stuff. Be careful of red traffic lights. cars still go through them within the first three seconds of turning red. Great hairdressers. People dress up smart/trendy a lot.
Harrogate: judgemental and unfriendly unless you are minted and/or are born there. It has the most selfish drivers in the world. Nobody lets anybody out. If you like being a bit cliquey you'll love it.
Barnsley: very cheap and friendly. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous. the schools don't have the greatest reputation.
York. Very family friendly. Good transport links. Houses are pricey towards the centre. Laid back friendly people.

The cold gets me every year.
I like the big helpings of pub food.
I like day trips to Scarborough and whitby.
The fish and chips are amazing.

Wombatinabathhat · 18/01/2016 19:10

Come to Yorkshire OP. It's God's own country and we're a friendly bunch Thanks

spanieleyes · 18/01/2016 19:13

I knew I was back in Yorkshire when the chap in front of me in the chippy queue ordered a spam fritter buttie with curry sauce!!

Yorkshire is great!!

DeoGratias · 18/01/2016 19:17

So remember tyhat for the first time in decades there is now a massive difference on child outcomes based on say the difference betwen Yorkshire and Surrey, feeding right through to exam grades. Arguably the worst thing you could now do for your children's life prospects is move them from Surrey to Yorkshire. Moving instead say to New York might work though.

TrinityForce · 18/01/2016 19:23

Where do your family live, OP?

Yorkshire's a bit far if you have no family/friends around.

Wombatinabathhat · 18/01/2016 19:25

Erm, Deo We don't all live in coal mines and keep ferrets you know. The 21st Century has also arrived in Yorkshire Shock

TheHiphopopotamus · 18/01/2016 19:28

Aye, all t'bairns get sent darn t'pit. We dunt believe in that new fangled edukayshun business.

froggyjump · 18/01/2016 19:29

Yorkshire is fantastic, but it is cold, wet and miserable in the winter, so be prepared. Do you have anywhere particular in mind? or is anywhere away from your in laws looking good at the moment?

honeyroar · 18/01/2016 19:32

Funnily enough, Deo, there are quite a lot of good schools in Yorkshire too. Kids actually get to universities and everything. They even have good universities there. You'd be amazed!

ShutUpLegs · 18/01/2016 19:33

Aye, and t'ones left ower go t'mills.

Take all generalised measures of educational outcomes with a large pinch of salt. Without knowing anything about the starting point or back grounds of the comparative cohorts, they tell you nothing. Plenty of good schools in Yorkshire, also plenty of areas with kids coming from some very tough starting points. ALthough Surrey has some stonking deprivation stats too.
