Fed up with Surrey and all the people here my mil and her family are all dysfunctional nightmares. I want to move far far away and start over freshere. Is it so wrong to just want to move far away for a better life?

OP posts:
MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 19:34

Leyburn and the surrounding villages are lovely Smile

user7755 · 18/01/2016 19:38

Deo - that's unsurprising given the Londoncentric government we currently have in office. There are significant variations between the south east and the rest of the country in terms of wealth and associated infrastructures.

That said, what is lacking in support from the government is more than made up for in character, humour, friendliness and affordability.

Leelu6 · 18/01/2016 19:41

Katarzyna, is someone using your MN account? Confused

Katarzyna79 · 18/01/2016 19:44

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 19:50

Believe me there is no issues like the issues in Bradford in the northern Dale. Absolutely none at all. Was pleasantly surprised tbh

Leelu6 · 18/01/2016 19:53

No, Katarzyna, you haven't said anything. Your posting style was different. Glad it's you!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 18/01/2016 19:55

OP, I'm contemplating the same move. Smile

Cake, I think there is a general perception that Surrey is full of very wealthy types. I went to uni in Yorkshire and when I said I was from Surrey the general assumption was that my dad must be a banker and therefore I was loaded. People seemed to struggle to get their heads around the fact that I came from a working class background and grew up in a council house.
Surrey has become more and more unaffordable for the average person over the years- in part because it is a quick journey to London and rising house prices there are pushing people further out.
My OH is from Yorkshire and he has found people friendly here.

honeyroar · 18/01/2016 19:56

Are you saying there is no racial tension in London? Never been any riots lately? And the moors murders victims were murdered in the Manchester area and buried on the Lancs side of th Lancs/Yorks borders. Four decades ago.

Seriously, you will find good and bad parts of Surrey and Yorkshire. The weather is definitely colder up North. You will get so much more property and value for money up there, and the countryside is lovely. (I think Ascot/Windsor/Bagshot areas are lovely though, I have friends there and it surprised me. I also love the Britishness of the area, Royal Windsor and Ascot traditions etc).

Savagebeauty · 18/01/2016 19:57

The moors murders were 50 years ago Shock

HeyYouGetOffMyCloud · 18/01/2016 19:58

Yorkshire is my favourite place. Dales, coast, moors, Leeds, friendly funny people.

Savagebeauty · 18/01/2016 20:00

I'm moving north from the SE.
Lovely countryside, vibrant city and cheaper houses

dimdommilpot · 18/01/2016 20:02

Yanbu. Come and join us. Yorkshire is fab :)

Bunbaker · 18/01/2016 20:07

"I moved up North from Surrey and never looked back. I don't miss it at all."

Same here.

"Barnsley: very cheap and friendly. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous. the schools don't have the greatest reputation."

I would rephrase that to some of the schools don't have the greatest reputation. West of the M1 the schools are good or outstanding.

boldlygoingsomewhere I get that as well. Despite having lived oop north for over 30 years everyone thinks I am posh because I still have a South London accent and say grass to rhyme with arse instead of rhyming with ass, and bus instead of booss etc.

I have lived in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire and like both.

LuluJakey1 · 18/01/2016 20:08

DH is from Yorkshire. He's lovely Smile But he lives in Northumberland with me now.

PIL live in Yorkshire. It is beautiful. They have a 4 bedroomed period house with a lovely garden, fireplaces, wooden floors, large sitting room, dining room and kitchen and a cellar, two bathrooms and a study. Would sell for about £220,000. In a great village, near Bradford.

frikadela01 · 18/01/2016 20:09

Hmm at moors murders... its like saying I've got negative ideas about London because of Jack the ripper.
And as for the negative stuff about make bradford British and what not... I have no love for Bradford and live here reluctantly but by heck you can bet all manner of people show up in the city for the counter protests whenever the scummy EDL decide to come.

Bunbaker · 18/01/2016 20:18

You can get a good curry in Bradford though Grin

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 20:19

Moors murders?? Saddleworth Moor isnt what most people would associate with Yorkshire and rightly so. What a ridiculous comment

TheHiphopopotamus · 18/01/2016 20:23

Moors murders?!

Ffs Biscuit

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 20:26

Fairly sure those bodies were also discovered on the Lancashire side of the moor. Still an idiotic comment tho

honeyroar · 18/01/2016 20:26

Saddle worth Moor actually used to be Yorkshire originally. It moved borders a couple of years after I was born. A lot of people in Saddleworth still call it Yorkshire (someone even did on another Mumsnet thread today!) Saddleworth is lovely, just as beautiful as any corner of Yorkshire. Just got tarnished by two nutters many years ago.

Slutbucket · 18/01/2016 20:29

I live in Bradford too. At the bottom of my lane is a wonderful valley and a view anyone would die for. The centre is awful but it's a small part of yorkshire the rest is bloody lovely! Halifax is having done serious work done to it and o mainly do my shopping there but can go to Leeds for proper shopping! We live in a four bedroom detached house with an outstanding school round the corner. We have wonderful walks lots of fresh air and space. Deo we got water and electricity last year! Where were you thinking of moving too OP?

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 20:35

I'm a Manchester girl born and bred. Love living in Yorkshire. Apart from the assumption that everyone either supports City or United Grin
Some people like Oldham Athletic or Stalybridge Celtic you know Wink

summerainbow · 18/01/2016 20:38

Yorkshire is lovely what to live there myself.
but
when you move away from relatives the tend to come and stay with you. and you spend all your holiday visiting them.

vienna1981 · 18/01/2016 20:45
