That consultant said this word...

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 10:57

I went to the hospital to see my results from my consultant. Result of this is that I will have to have surgery that has a six to eight week recovery time. As he was explaining my condition he said that it is very common in " Negroid ladies"!!
The nurse in the room looked at me and shifted uncomfortably in her seat! And I took a second to register if he really did say that. Then I did a nervous laugh and said to him " you must not use that word" he said "what, that is what you are" " what is wrong with Negroid"? I said " stop, use another word". He said " oh I didn't know that Negroid would offend you"
Aibu that he should not have said that word?

Talk about my dd not Dr!

AlwaysBeYourself · 16/01/2016 16:16

laurierf If you were not trying to paint the Welsh in a bad light then why did you link to an article that states that the Welsh are supposedly prejudice and racist? What was the relevance in posting that?

I was posting that the Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Cornish are minority groups and are white and subjected to racism in response to a few posters saying that whites are not subjected to racism.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:18

Fidel1ne
OP already said he may be of Greek origin. Some people say things differently. Not everyone is up with all this PC stuff especially if English is not the persons mother tongue. This could be the case with the doctor.
I would be more worried about upcoming operation than this comment. He didnt say it to her in a horrible way therefore I would not take any offence.
It wasnt in malace by the sounds of it. Worlds gone bonkers Hmm

fidel1ne · 16/01/2016 16:20

Considerate, sensitive language is hardly out there at the madder fringes of 'PC gawn mad' Flat.

LagoonaBlu · 16/01/2016 16:21

OP the Dr was totally out of order, YANBU

White peoples opinions of whether this is racist/offensive are irrelevant

LagoonaBlu · 16/01/2016 16:24

And good luck with the operation Flowers

Potatoface2 · 16/01/2016 16:25

pitpatkitkat....i dont agree with pointing out about 'the NHS is funded by the taxpayer' when making comments about NHS staff....you do realise that NHS staff pay tax too!

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 16:27

"All this PC stuff"
"World's gone bonkers"

Here we go again. Hmm

The OP was entitled to respect. She didn't get it.

pocketsaviour · 16/01/2016 16:27

Disappointing amounts of whitesplaining going on in this thread :(

BonitaFangita · 16/01/2016 16:29

I think that if someone is speaking to you in a way that you find offensive, then it is offensive, (whether or not they meant to offend) and to compound that by repeating the word goes a little bit further than ignorance. That's before we get to the Mr Right comments which were totally uncalled for and completely unprofessional.
I personally find that word and other variations of it highly offensive, and am surprised at some of the insensitive comments on this thread.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:32

The doctor was possibly Greek or another nationality. I would be more concerned he was doing his job well rather than worrying about this to be honest. His skill and expertise in his field as a clever man has been totally overlooked by this word that he used NOT in malace.

BonitaFangita · 16/01/2016 16:32

Sorry Oz I meant to add good luck with your operation and recovery, I hope all goes well. Flowers

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 16:33

He didn't say it to her in a horrible way therefore I would not take any offence. No offence taken the first time that he said it as I reacted to it by saying you mustn't use that word. By the third time he had continued to use it then it is in my opinion that they was not malice bit pure ignorance. As for the worlds gone bonkers you are right if you think that it is acceptable to go on and do it a second and third time.

Bloody hell. He's not a fucking one-of-a-kind, Nobel Prize-winning researcher. There are plenty of doctors out there with exactly his skill and expertise in the field, who also possess tact. If you're at risk of saying something that makes your patient uncomfortable because you're not 'up' on the acceptable terminology, and the thing you're contemplating saying is irrelevant to the consultation anyhow, you keep your bloody mouth shut on that particular topic.

fidel1ne · 16/01/2016 16:40

White peoples opinions of whether this is racist/offensive are irrelevant

Terrible approach to sexism, racism, homophobia etc to say that only female, BAME or LGBT opinions 'matter'.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:40

OP if you was not offended by it, why did you pull him up and tell him not to use it? Baffled

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 16:43

Oh for goodness sake.

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 16:44

This man will perform a major operation on me and I don't know if your on a wind up FlatontheHill. His job should include putting a patient at ease knowing he is to open me up. Not to make me feel uncomfortable as he also did to the nurse in the room at the time. This isn't a surgery for an ingrown toenail it's pretty serious and devastating. A clever man as you put it would in a situation like this should show some tact!!

OP posts:
FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:46

Ok i will ask again. OP you said you were not offended.
Then why did you ask him to not use the word?
Its got nothing to do with opening you up. We are talking about the word.

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 16:47

Ffs read what I have said that I wasn't offended the first time and did pull him up on it. He then continued to use the word. Are you basically saying suck it up? Baffled indeed at your responses!!

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 16:47

Oz I think most people have managed to grasp what you're saying.

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 16:49

I'm offended by you FlatontheHill.

OP posts:
FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:52

I have read that you said you were NOT offended the first time.
So why be offended 2nd and 3rd. Yes I am baffled OP.
You asked him not to use the word. Why? You said yourself you were not offended.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 16:56

OP you say you are offended by me!
That clearly states why people get sick of all this. People get offended for no reason like you clearly have here. I have not been rude or malicious or nasty to you yet you have clearly swerved the question put to you and have screamed 'offence'. I feel sorry for people that have to deal with the general public. It must be like walking on eggshells.

fidel1ne · 16/01/2016 16:58

It's now beyond clear that you are goading and baiting Flat.
