That consultant said this word...

I went to the hospital to see my results from my consultant. Result of this is that I will have to have surgery that has a six to eight week recovery time. As he was explaining my condition he said that it is very common in " Negroid ladies"!!
The nurse in the room looked at me and shifted uncomfortably in her seat! And I took a second to register if he really did say that. Then I did a nervous laugh and said to him " you must not use that word" he said "what, that is what you are" " what is wrong with Negroid"? I said " stop, use another word". He said " oh I didn't know that Negroid would offend you"
Aibu that he should not have said that word?

Some very chippy people on here. Always the same offenders Hmm
When i was young i had years of being tormented for a condition i had of being hairy. (Im a woman by the way) arms, legs and face. Was awful.
Was constantly called wolf girl, monkey, freak etc etc

This condition is sorted now thankfully. But i suffered for years because of this. And all i hear on here is about how people have suffered racism over the years etc etc. Well do you know what. Other people suffer too, not just because of colour but because of other things like a disability or in my case being hairy. I have not carried this bitterness on. People need to stop being chippy and offended. Get over it. No one likes a person with a chip on their shoulder. Its like walking on eggshells.

YouGotta
It means that she was being a bit illiberal in her willingness to understand the medical professional that was trying to help her.
I don't have to google English words, you obviously did.
Nothing difficult there, is English your first language?

'I have not carried this bitterness on.'

Are you sure about that? You come across as perfectly acidic.

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 20:17

Do you not understand that he was told not to use that word and to stop regardless of its variation in genetic make up? Or are you just showing your own ignorance?

Lots of people have been upset about a lot of things. It's horrible and it would be better if it didn't happen.

It is not, at all, even a little bit the same as racism which is not about individuals.

Now , now You don't get so cross just because some people don't agree with you.

Is there really any need for the language? Some people find that as offensive as the N word- but of course you won't understand that.

laurierf · 16/01/2016 20:19

On a thread where a white Welsh person complains that white people suffer racism in Britain - with the terms 'boyo' and 'taff' being applied to white British people by other white British people as evidence of racism (of course there's no derogatory term for English people and it's no doubt only English people who use the terms 'boyo' and 'taff') - that even white Cornish people are marked out from other white English nationals and suffer racism, whilst failing to acknowledge a poll that says that a sizeable proportion of British teenagers think it's acceptable to use racial slurs whilst referring to POC irrespective of their nationality, it's black people who are "so quick to take offence and have massive chips on their shoulders" PC gone mad, professionally offended, bonkers etc. Wow.

PollyPerky · 16/01/2016 20:20

Do you not understand that he was told not to use that word and to stop regardless of its variation in genetic make up?

Who told him?

You?

He doesn't have to agree with you. Why should he when he wasn't doing anything wrong?

Flat as I said before it's only like walking on eggshells if you don't care about treating people with respect.

Would you like to elaborate on always the same offenders?

You suffered name calling and mistreatment. That was unacceptable . It doesn't make racism or xenophobia or any other stigmatising acceptable

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 20:21

Some real spiteful posters showing their true colours.

Some people find that as offensive as the N word- but of course you won't understand that

Who are these people? Is there a genuine argument that cunt is a more offensive word? I'm genuinely interested.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 20:23

Ilovesooty
Yes the repeat chippy offenders are generally yourself and MrsDevere who I would say is a lot worse than you.
I find you more controlled and you explain what you actually mean. Trust that clarifies Wink

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 20:24

Yes I told him. A patient to a medical professional who carried on doing it. That was wrong totally wrong.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 20:24

Polly the patient has every right to request that specific words, terminology and /or forms of address are not used.

I vote we send all foreign gynaecologists home immediately. Otherwise these outrages will continue to happen. I also suggest we start a letter-writing campaign to all the doctors and medical researchers in Africa and other unenlightened "foreign parts" to tell them how disgusted we are by their racism in using this shocking term.

MrsCampbellBlack · 16/01/2016 20:26

yanbu

With my eldest we see a lot of medical staff and most are fab. However this week we saw a consultant who had dreadful inter-personal skills - just great when dealing with children with chronic health conditions.

I know you need to be super clever to be a Dr but having a kind way with people doesn't always go hand in hand with that.

As an aside - someone last week kept referring to 'negresses' in style and beauty - quite a few people were offended by that. I was and I am white.

Also I always thought the received wisdom on mn was if someone tells you that something you have said is offensive to them - then don't keep saying it.
