to ask someone to move their child out of my plane seat

kipperssippers · 13/01/2016 20:00

more of a WWYD then AIBU but...
i booked the seat by the window as i always do and when i got to my seat a child around 8 was in my seat with her mum beside her.
When i got there i told the mother that the window seat is my seat and she said her child wanted the window seat to look out, i then replied then you should of booked one.
I didnt want to cause a scene but the women made out i'm an arsehole for asking her kid to move as she had never been on a flight and wanted to look outside.
I did give in and stayed pissed off for 7 hours in my non window seat.

what would you of done in this situation?

You are all so kind! I will donate any extra to a fund for those who didn't book seats to pay for seats they claim as their own.

Mookbark · 14/01/2016 12:06

Fuck! I've lost a morning of work reading this. Grin
I hope Cat doesn't live anywhere near me as I am a grumpy middle aged woman who barely puts up with my own children, near mind anyone else's. I have asked people to move out of train and cinema seats. Unfortunately, I don't think any of them were children.
Oh, BTW, most people who know me in rl think I am lovely. Being grumpy, quietly assertive and nice are not mutually exclusive.

When we do not have kids with us, we do not want to put other peoples kids first all the time.

See I always put kids first, not just mine

JassyRadlett · 14/01/2016 12:09

See I always put kids first, not just mine

What's your limit?

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 12:10

Jassy as long as it's not hurting anyone I think it's fine usually. But I'll always go out of my way for them

Hihohoho1 · 14/01/2016 12:10

Do kelpies spread as much joy as alcohol?

Me in too.

My dm if foreign! She's welsh. She sings like an angel and wears a large black hat. Grin as they all do.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/01/2016 12:10

I'd like to see the Kelpies.

Am I the only one picturing Cats like this? Confused

Ok.

So, you're in a restaurant and a kid likes the look of your meal. You give it to them?

You're in a cafe and a child likes the look of the cake you've just bought and were about to eat. It's theirs?

You're at a hotel, and a child really wants a room with a private pool. Do you swap rooms with them?

MyLifeisaboxofwormgears · 14/01/2016 12:14

I've flown in and out of the Caribbean a few times and as a result I would never ever let someone else sit in a seat booked in my name.
Standard drug smuggling/drug using tactic was to sit in someone else's seat so when the sniffer dogs were brought onto the plane on landing in the UK and they sniffed drugs on a seat you had your name against - yes you, the innocent person who was too nice to object to three large lads sitting in your booked seats would get a visit from the drugs squad.

So I would definitely have said "this is my booked seat, get lost" to the woman, and got the stewards involved.

cleaty · 14/01/2016 12:14

Sure Meow. Stuck in a queue at a supermarket you always let people with kids go before you, they get so bored waiting. In a restaurant a family come in with kids and there are no free tables, you give up yours, after all what price kids joy.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/01/2016 12:18

See I always put kids first, not just mine

Well aren't you just the perfect person despite swearing about people because they are English/not as lovely as you plainly are

Do you have a special spreadsheet for nice things done for children or does it all go on the same sheet?

expat We could have another whip-round and ALL go to see the Kelpies! Some of us could book our tickets but, as someone without children, one of you who hasn't booked will have to insist that I give up my seat for your child! Grin

Funinthesun15 · 14/01/2016 12:19

cat You keep saying you aren'the English despite being born here see yourself as not English yet still choose to live here and hold some quite nasty views about English people.

Having lived all over Europe and my DH family not being from England, you find all sorts of people in all countries.

Non are 'better' than others. It is quite stupid imo to make sweeping generalisations of whole nations!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/01/2016 12:19

hiho Does she carry a leek and some welshcakes at all times as well? Grin

cleaty · 14/01/2016 12:20

Of course Livia. Kids come first - ALWAYS

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 12:21

Jassy

If a child asked for some of my food I'd share it, same with cakes.

cleaty

I let kids go in front of me or people with less items, and I have done that in restaurants. I can eat later.

Private room isn't mine to give so I can't do that but where I can I do little things to make others happy.

sugar21 · 14/01/2016 12:22

Livia That would be nice but we can't go on the chuffer train because the exit will be blocked by perambulators

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/01/2016 12:24

sugar Oh yes, that's a very good point... Grin

JassyRadlett · 14/01/2016 12:26

See I always put kids first, not just mine

Unless of course they're kids stuck at nursery because some numpty wouldn't fold their buggy or move down inside the carriage, which made their parents miss their stop. Grin

JassyRadlett · 14/01/2016 12:27

Cats, if that's really true, I really feel sorry for your kid. What a terrible example.

What's the age limit for giving food to strange children? Why won't you swap your hotel room for a worse one?

Roussette · 14/01/2016 12:28

So... some whining kid starts having a meltdown because you (a stranger on the next table) wants the same cake as you, but the cafe has run out. It's OK then to give them your cake?

What sort of message does that give out to the child? OK, you might not realise.

  • I can have what I want when I want
  • if I make a big enough fuss, I get what I want
  • I don't have to consider anyone else
  • my Mum's a pushover for allowing me to do all of the above
cleaty · 14/01/2016 12:28

I want to meet Cats in real life with kids in tow. I will instruct the kids to ask Cats to give them anything of hers they fancy.
