to ask someone to move their child out of my plane seat

1000 replies

kipperssippers · 13/01/2016 20:00

more of a WWYD then AIBU but...
i booked the seat by the window as i always do and when i got to my seat a child around 8 was in my seat with her mum beside her.
When i got there i told the mother that the window seat is my seat and she said her child wanted the window seat to look out, i then replied then you should of booked one.
I didnt want to cause a scene but the women made out i'm an arsehole for asking her kid to move as she had never been on a flight and wanted to look outside.
I did give in and stayed pissed off for 7 hours in my non window seat.

what would you of done in this situation?

OP posts:
BiddyPop · 14/01/2016 10:48

Oh, and I would definitely do it through the cabin crew - that's their job, and they may well remember you nicely if you do it nicely (who knows, they may be aware of a window seat farther forward that they can move you to?!) Wink

SuperFlyHigh · 14/01/2016 10:49

livia I think perhaps why cat wouldn't move was because they were english commuters innit?! If they were forrin (deliberate misspelling) she'd probably have moved like a shot...

a child's joy I love that too! I may get a tshirt printed with that phrase....

maybebabybee · 14/01/2016 10:49

Being kind to children isn't entitled

Let's not forget the OP was kind to the child. She gave her her seat. But it wasn't fair that she felt obliged to.

londonrach · 14/01/2016 10:49

Id have just let the attendant deal with it. There are reasons why people book seats. Mother should have booked a window seat if she wanted one.

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 10:49

Super this is where cultural difference comes in, in other places being kind to kids wouldn't be considered entitled. I suppose it's just a differing view point but I prefer more laid back child friendly societies

Homeriliad · 14/01/2016 10:50

Surely the solution is to book in first class? I always fly first class and have never had a child sit in my seat.
Did the mother look working class? That might explain their behaviour.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/01/2016 10:50

You know what you can do cats if you refer NM - however they don't allow swearing which you engaged in earlier in this thread remember that! Grin

Samantha28 · 14/01/2016 10:51

NM does seem nicer than MN

You are SO right , meow . And they have tickers and glitter and stuff. You should definitely flounce off there RIGHT NOW -that will show all these mean MNers

Remember to ask MN towers to refund your subscription

SuperFlyHigh · 14/01/2016 10:52

cats I have european friends. All of them would demand their kid moved (I asked the frenchie by what'sapp today).

They're kind but polite.

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 10:53

Super we can all trade anecdotes. I asked my mum what she'd do and she was horrified some people wouldn't move.

There are people who would and wouldn't all over the world, but some cultures tend towards one more than the other

maybebabybee · 14/01/2016 10:54

she was horrified some people wouldn't move.

You were going on about people in this country overreacting to non-issues earlier Hmm

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 10:55

Not horrified as in being reduced to tears by it but she thought it was very unfriendly behaviour

Like I do

Roussette · 14/01/2016 10:57

I don't hate the English but I think the culture is very unfriendly in comparison to other countries. It's very anal people get upset about non issues
You've got a cheek saying this given how incensed you were about your "train issue" You are no different to anyone else, you know.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/01/2016 10:59

SuperFly GrinGrin Of course - bloody English Grin Do them good to have to walk to the next set of doors and miss their stop - assholes Grin

Cats I am still struggling to find the spite except in some of your comments to other posters and about the English

I think you may be a delicate little snowflake if you think that, with all the utter shite that is going on in the world, someone complaining about someone else nicking their reserved seat is spiteful!

BiddyPop · 14/01/2016 11:02

I think this is a case for a MN classic:

No is a complete sentence!!

StayWithMe · 14/01/2016 11:05

Give it up Cats. You were born in England, so you're English. I dare say you would be on here screaming about racism if some one said you were a foreigner because your parents aren't from England.

TeapotTam · 14/01/2016 11:05

If the mum had asked politely then I wouldn't have a problem but I think it's incredibly rude to just put her there without asking you. I'd probably let the child sit there but give the mum and peace of my mind about manners.

differentnameforthis · 14/01/2016 11:07

Wouldn't have given a flying fuck about 'keeping the peace' or 'awkwardness'. It's very British "keeping the peace" Grin

I would have spoken to flight crew too. If you booked the seat, it was yours.

RonniePickering · 14/01/2016 11:09

Why has the OP disappeared into the ether? You must be thrilled to take centre stage again Cats.

You're like a month to the flame, beating the same drum.

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 11:10

Stay er no I have dual nationality. You can't tell someone how to identify. Lots of people with foreign ancestry don't identify as English.

And no I wouldn't think it racist if someone said I want English. Calling me a "nasty foreigner" yes but just "she's not English" is fine

JassyRadlett · 14/01/2016 11:11

Cats, you've used the word 'spiteful' in really odd contexts a few times now. Are you sure it's the word you mean to use? It's not a straight synonym for 'nasty'.

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 11:11

Ronnie if you read it, I had let it go but then people kept commenting so I replied. Not my fault

TheCatsMeow · 14/01/2016 11:12

Jassy no I know but to me it seems to be a "I booked it so ha" which does seem spiteful

LilaTheTiger · 14/01/2016 11:13

I don't think you can pre-book you know. Just book.

Only1scoop · 14/01/2016 11:14

I think it's a case of 'Kippers' feeding the 'cat'

Op is still here
