Went to cinema this week with DH, planning to take DS and his brother tomorrow for birthday treat. I can't believe that in 2016 we will be forced to walk past this poster and that they have even called the film Dirty Granpa!

Really??? Letching older man perving young woman's suggestively raised arse whilst other man holds 'petrol nozzle' pointing at her?? I don't want my sons seeing this sexist shit.
(only one cinema in our town btw)

Goodnightdarth Thank you.

There is a continuum between what nobody in their right mind could find offensive at one end, and what nobody in their right mind could not find offensive at the other - and there is no bright line at the border. My head is well round the distinction you make, and I would like to think that I observe it - but there are probably women and men who would put it further than I do in both directions!

And the line has changed in my lifetime. Forty years ago a young woman in my (then) office was very offended because not a man in the place had complimented her on her change of hair-style (which I had not noticed; I don't know whether I would have mentioned it if I had) and said we were all either blind as bats or very rude. Quite apart from the first option being unacceptable these days for other reasons, I don't think many women nowadays would find male silence on the subject offensive.

When I remember such things I wonder what we take for granted as being right now which will seem absurd and wrong forty years on, not that I will be there to see it.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 21:22

"I don't think a man is really best placed to tell women what they should or shouldn't be offended by. "

Now THAT's bigoted. Nobody's view should be invalidated based on the shape of their genitals. You may see men and women as separate tribes, I don't. These are human issues, people issues and we are all people.

I certainly hope that in 40 years, such blatantly dehumanising film posters will be banned! And not because the "feminists have won", but because the ad execs will actually think about what's offensive to women instead of what appeals to men.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 21:25

"Huh? Who is that even to?"

You.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 21:29

Hmm, not when, historically, one gender has told the other gender what to do with their body, health, reproductive rights, right to feed their baby unharassed, and their freedom. Not when one gender is telling the other "I don't believe the stuff you are offended by exists, soz." That's not fair, or balanced, or right.

In an ideal world I absolutely believe that your above statement is correct. In reality, it rarely works that way.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 21:30

You.

Why, I don't understand. "Give you Fiske's quote"?

Clear communication: good part of a debate.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 21:32

Sorry, I reject your tribalism. I have done none of the things you list and you cannot hold me accountable for those things.

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 21:35

Hello Andrewofgg. Isn't there an episode of Terry and June on UKGold calling you?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 21:35

Uh, what? You told me, several times, you don't believe objectification exists. That comes under "I don't believe the stuff you are offended by exists, soz."

As to the other, I don't know what you do when you're not on this thread, but it doesn't seem to me so far that you're someone interested in having a fair and balanced debate on misogyny, so I'm hardly going to run to you begging for your opinion on the state of the female gender.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 21:36

Brightside, I feel I should also warn you that you're coming dangerously close to admitting you're a man. Shock

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 21:39

"Uh, what? You told me, several times, you don't believe objectification exists. That comes under "I don't believe the stuff you are offended by exists, soz.""

I've told you repeatedly that I believe sexism exists. When I said that I don't believe in objectification per se I wasn't being literal. I'm sure the psychological condition exists but it must be exceptionally rare.

Some people see it in their soup.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 21:42

"but it doesn't seem to me so far that you're someone interested in having a fair and balanced debate on misogyny,"

Correct, if that debate involves the assertion that I am misogynistic. That's not something I am willing to entertain.

sleeponeday · 08/01/2016 21:44

Correct, if that debate involves the assertion that I am misogynistic. That's not something I am willing to entertain.

Are you willing to entertain that you are sexist? Or are all these silly women just talking nonsense again?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 21:45

You've certainly relaxed the very hard-line stance you were taking earlier. A lot of things are suddenly not meant "literally". Which is nice.

But at the end of the day, neither of us get to make the rules. All we can do is fight for the things we believe in, and see who wins in the end. I expect it will be a very long time before women get the respect they deserve.

In the meantime, maybe try NOT to dismiss women's views completely when you're discussing misogyny on the internet? That would be nice too.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 22:12

"Are you willing to entertain that you are sexist?"

No.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 22:15

"In the meantime, maybe try NOT to dismiss women's views completely when you're discussing misogyny on the internet?"
I'll dismiss any views I like whenever I want. One thing I can guarantee though, unlike you it won't be on account of a person's genitals.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 22:21

I'll dismiss any views I like whenever I want.

Lovely. Grin Definitely a candidate for a balanced debate. I expect the criteria will be "have I ever experienced this? Nope " or "do I believe this is likely based on my experience? Nope "

I'm sorry, I very much believe that a lot of your dismissal of views is based on the gender of the person giving them. But oh well.

Lord-on what do you base your view that objectification does not exist?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 22:32

See? That's what I mean. You've been nothing but stroppy, rude, dismissive and name-calling throughout this whole discussion. I can be guilty of it myself, it's easy on the internet, but I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve here. Apart from getting the last word. It's not making you look like a master debater ... or maybe it is .

(Couldn't resist.)

"Tribal bigot"? What does that even mean?

M48294Y · 08/01/2016 22:37

Presumably the tribal bigot comment is going to get deleted?

Or should someone go and poke the poor sod on duty at HQ on a Friday night?

M48294Y · 08/01/2016 22:39

And perhaps remind them of their own rules on goady trolling fuckwittery?

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 22:39

"Lord-on what do you base your view that objectification does not exist?"

36 years of interacting with other humans.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 22:39

M48294Y I think I've been called worse today on this thread Grin Cowardly, idiot and nutter for one. I think I prefer "tribal bigot", it's so zany.

I'm honestly not fussed. If Brightside wants to throw around insults in place of an actual argument, that's fine.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 22:41

36 years of interacting with other humans.

Is it bad that I'm picturing a 36 yo man in his underwear sitting in his mum's basement all day? Confused
