away with work.
standard double room.
bed is too short and too narrow. and that's for me alone.

how can 2 people comfortably sleep in one? every night? at the same time?

and don't get me started on the manky decorative bed throw and cushions

I love snuggling, sex, cuddling up after sex etc.

me too, but the super king & separate duvets don't stop that at all.

Is this thread more evidence of the obesity crisis?

NiNoKuni · 07/01/2016 09:20

We have a superking with a Tempur mattress - it's total bliss. No being bounced around by mobile DH and I can get just far enough away from his pregnant walrus-like snoring. Hotels are now a minefield, so unless it's stated as a kingsize at a minimum, we tend to book a twin room!

Having grown up on the Continent, everything house-related does seem smaller here. Houses, rooms, beds. Don't we have some of the smallest houses in the world in the UK for some reason? So although doubles may seem normal to many Brits, they're weirdly tiny to many other nationalities.

cleaty · 07/01/2016 09:21

Yes I think it is

BiddyPop · 07/01/2016 09:23

We got a king bed and superking duvet when we got married - DH cannot sleep when going to PILs as they only have a double (I suspect it's a queen, but he complains every time).

Could be worse, my parents only had 2 singles for donkey's years.....for visitors. They've also always had a king size (with sheets/blankets - old school).

Stevenhydesafro1 · 07/01/2016 09:26

We have a super king and separate duvets, we do everything with those you can do with a shared duvet.

I really believe it's improved our marriage, as I tend to sprawl and like to roll the duvet around myself.

I too cry when we've stayed away from home and are greated with a double bed.

I search for rooms with at least king sized beds or have booked a twin and shoved the beds together. I need my space when I sleep, a husband who kicks out in his sleep and me with a spinal injury doesn't work in a double.

maybebabybee · 07/01/2016 09:26

catford Grin that's exactly what I was wondering! DP and I are not exactly pixies (I am short but not particularly skinny, especially not at 31 weeks pregnant!) but we can fit perfectly comfortably enough in a double.

BiddyPop · 07/01/2016 09:27

Oh, and answering another question, it's more that DH is a very restless sleeper always (and I am a fair amount), not about size. He is a Medium clothing, and I am a 16 (yes overweight, but nowhere near obese, BMI 27).

TheOptimisticPessimist · 07/01/2016 09:30

I share a double with 6ft6 DP. I can't remember the last time I slept through a whole night without waking up to shove his legs out the way because he has to sleep diagonally to fit comfortably or so he says.

A superking is the next big purchase though!!

diddl · 07/01/2016 09:34

It seems common sense as someone put above.

If you sleep in a single bed as an adult, why wouldn't you want that each?

Don't most adults have a double to themselves?

So a single each is even less room!!

dh and I are both tall (but below 6ft) and are slim (bmi low twenties) so naught to do with obesity/sieze

OP posts:
ManneryTowers · 07/01/2016 09:41

How big is your DS
Grin
Perfectly sized for two thanks! Although he is very tall, like his dad. By the time he is mid teens I imagine he will prefer a double bed to spread out in, as I did.

It would also make room shuffling easier when we have guests!

Queenbean · 07/01/2016 09:42

Optimistic - my DP is 6'7"! He sleeps with his feet jammed through the bars at the bottom of the bed, we can't sleep in beds with a piece at the bottom (ie sleigh beds) otherwise I get the diagonal treatment too!

TheSecondViola · 07/01/2016 09:47

If the double is too short and too narrow, are you more than 4ft wide? Because I can fit 2 adults and at least half my many children in my double at a push. You must be massive to take up an entire double by yourself.

Larger beds might be more comfortable and luxurious, but you have to be pretty damn wide to find a standard double too narrow for one person.

maybebabybee · 07/01/2016 09:48

I think this is what I was trying to get at, I have sympathy if you prefer the larger space as that's totally fair enough, but claiming a double is genuinely too small for a regular sized person is a bit Hmm

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 07/01/2016 09:49

We have a superking but I choose to sleep in the spare room in the double bed I had when I was a singleton 🙊

HooseRice · 07/01/2016 09:50

My 2 daughters went straight from their cot beds to standard doubles. They have large rooms and they're great for sleepovers.

HanSolo · 07/01/2016 09:53

People with two individual duvets in a king sized bed- do you have a single or a double duvet each? How do you put the duvets in the day?

Orangeanddemons · 07/01/2016 09:55

I don't think it is anything at all to do with the obesity crisis, but it is to do with ergonomics and better nutrition. Each generation is successively taller than their parents.

So a standard double 70 years ago was probably fine as people were much smaller. but people are much much taller these days. I'm a teacher, when I was at school, I was tall at 5ft 8. Now most of my 6th formers are much taller than me. Taller means longer legs and arms, so they take up more space too.

VegetablEsoup · 07/01/2016 09:56

2 single duvets
they are crumpled aired over the end of the bed during the day.

tbf a standard double is fine for one person, but too small for 2 (or more) imo.
there is also lots of research to suggest that people don't sleep well in too small beds.

Perfect thread as we are just buying a new bed! Super won't fit so it will be a king.
Anyone have any recommendations for a mattress?

And fatter.

I don't think a double is too small for one but for two people you get the equivalent of a cot space
I'm 5ft 10 and a bit and I don't want to be touched when I'm asleep Grin so I have a super King
