away with work.
standard double room.
bed is too short and too narrow. and that's for me alone.

how can 2 people comfortably sleep in one? every night? at the same time?

and don't get me started on the manky decorative bed throw and cushions

YANBU- we moved an internal wall upstairs to get our, accidently purchased, superking bed in.

Best bed I will ever have. I can't even look at double beds, their size offends me Grin

VegetablEsoup · 06/01/2016 22:51

superking is so worth it imo. we sleep much better and don't wake each other up just by moving in sleep.
having single duvets means I can have a lovely 12tog one and furnace dh a 4 tog one.

Another superking with separate duvets here. It is a zip and link mattress, and we use the link as a barrier - any limb that crosses it without express invitation can be ruthlessly tickled or kicked back.

ouryve · 06/01/2016 22:52

YANBU. My feet are almost at the end of my king size and I'm verging on shortarse. And I can't sleep if someone's touching me.

Queenbean · 06/01/2016 22:55

I hate double beds. They're not double, they're one and a half single beds. Why do people sleep as children in single beds then when they become big adults they willingly choose to sleep with someone else in a bed only 1+1/2 times bigger. It makes no sense.

I have a lovely European king sized bed (bigger than normal king) which is also very firm. DP goes to the loo and tosses and turns so much in the night that when we sleep in a soft, double bed, I'm thrown around like I'm on a bouncy castle. It's horrible.

I, like pp, would rather stay in my own bed than an old or small bed.

And pillows - I bloody hate those enormous pouffy pillows you get in hotel rooms, give me something nice and firm and flat so I can lie on my stomach please

Cachareltastic · 06/01/2016 23:01

We have a double and it's fine. Me DH and the cat fitted fine. Sadly cat not here anymore, very much missed but still double bed fits DH, DD and me ok. I am 5.9, DH 5.11 and DD aged 3,6. We have a collection of cuddly toys too (they wish to remain anonymous).

raisin3cookies · 06/01/2016 23:04

Oh the joy that filled my soul when we got a superking bed!

We never replaced the duvets, we just use our own like pps have said. I do have a superking quilt that I spread over the top of our separate duvets when I'm feeling slightly domestic and actually make the bed.

I also hate the mattresses everywhere I go, though I was surprised to note that I am not as uncomfortable sleeping away from home now that I've lost some weight.

SuperCee7 · 06/01/2016 23:05

Double here and totally fine. I can sprawl all I like. Room wouldn't fit a bigger bed anyway.

Oakmaiden · 06/01/2016 23:08

DH and I disagree on this. I want a bigger bed. DH like the cosiness of a standard double. I don't want cosy. Or at least, not cosy that involves being touched whilst I am trying to sleep.

zipzap · 06/01/2016 23:09

youremywifenow when we moved house and needed to buy a new double bed, we just bought another kingsize bed as that was what we'd had, thinking we would carry on using our bed and put the new one in the guest room. Didn't even really think about a kingsize.

We ended up with the new one in our room as the base had got fake suedey fabric (sounds bad but actually quite nice - much better than the traditional mattress fabric they use that you then need to use a valance to cover!) on that matched our carpet. It's comfy enough - but we regretted not getting a superking from really early on and now, several years on, we still say 'if only...' and 'next time we will...' - particularly as there is now dc2 on the scene and both dc are taking up more and more space pushing me closer and closer to the edge growing rapidly.

Even if you still use your old duvets (or have a duvet each) and slowly introduce new superking bedding, go for a superking.

Reckon I have another two or three years until it's time I can justify buying a new bed and I can't wait... Grin

I love my super king bed, couldn't go back to anything else now - even a kingsize seems too small.

Can't believe that when DH and I were young and stayed over at his parents, we used to share a single bed - can't quite work out how we both fitted in (although we were both a lot thinner then!)

Youremywifenow · 06/01/2016 23:14

Ok you've sold me on the super king. Does make me think of fags though. zipzap, where did you get your base? That's the type of thing I want - solid but no valance needed

SenecaFalls · 06/01/2016 23:15

A double does not leave enough room for the dog and us. So a US queen it is, which I think is roughly the same as a UK king. We did have a US king (super king in UK) when we had two dogs and a cat.

cosytoaster · 06/01/2016 23:16

I'm single but have a king size all to myself, it feels just about right Smile

Baressentials · 06/01/2016 23:16

Those of you who have separate duvets - how does that work? Sorry if I am being thick but doesn't it look messy when the bed is made? Or do you have a nice cover/throw to put over them?
I have a standard double but would love to get a kingsize. No partner but dc who like creeping into my bed!

Headofthehive55 · 06/01/2016 23:23

Depends how many are in the bed with you.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 06/01/2016 23:31

That's all is in my bedroom is a bed, chest of draws and a built in cupboard. Tv is on the wall.

Why do I need floor space for, I have a little space each side to walk in and out of the room.

Perfect for lazy Sunday mornings.

Plus I have fibromyalgia so sometime spend a whole next day after working in bed due to extreme tiredness.

Orangesarenot · 06/01/2016 23:32

Bareessentials it doesn't look as tidy as one big duvet admittedly. But if you make it carefully which we manage to do on Sundays it looks ok. Tbh when we shared a duvet, we didn't care what it looked like when made, we were too busy sniping at each other for stealing the duvet.

Dowser · 06/01/2016 23:32

When my exh left I downgraded to a double from a queen. I treated myself to beautiful new bed linen when I also did up the room. I have lots of different sets.

Now shiny new husband and I share the double. We manage just fine. He's 3-4 stone thinner than ex for a start and a bit taller (win! Win!) and I'm not parting with my bed linen. Plus win! Win! On bed changing day. No grappling with massive sheets and duvets.

Biggest bed I've slept in was an emperor at the ritz. Massive.

Bambambini · 06/01/2016 23:36

We have a super kingsize which we love, we only buy houses where it will fit. Four of us can get in fairly comfortably. A normal double does seem so so small - and me and the husband aren't that big.

Quinoa20 · 06/01/2016 23:43

Definitely, me and DH went away last week and obviously are too used to our super King - we have had it since August and love it long time.

ShadowsCollideIsSurroundedByAd · 07/01/2016 00:28

Oh, YAsoNBU. DP and I rent, every rental we've lived in had king size beds until we moved into our current place, which had a standard double. We lasted about three weeks with it before we had to go and buy a super king, and I swear we argued more in those three weeks than in the entire fifteen years we've been together! We're both tall, so it was all elbows and knees.

Next time we move will be when we buy a place of our own, and I have promised myself that we will have a master bedroom big enough for a Caesar size bed. Heaven! I'm a sprawly, starfishy sleeper, in fairness. And DP tosses and turns like crazy. Caesar size bed and a rock hard mattress. That's the dream GrinGrin

MLGs · 07/01/2016 07:40

Superking here

VegetablEsoup · 07/01/2016 07:54

so, who is going to start a petition that bedrooms can only be called bedrooms if they are big enough to fit a super kingsize bed?
