I've just watched Ant and Dec with Prince Charles. The sheer opulence of those numerous palaces. Just how many do they need? So so wrong imo.
Surely in these times of massive hardship for so many it is time they were scaled right back.

...and stopped receiving state handouts for her and her family.

redstrawberry10 · 06/01/2016 12:17

I think that a lot of dislike for the Royal Family is pure envy/jealousy but honestly I wouldn't trade my normal life for theirs.

I love it when people say this.

Am I jealous that one of the richest families in the country has MORE money thrown at it through taxation? 10% jealous, 90% outraged.

Am I jealous that Charles, whose financial, political and academic credentials are suspect, is asked to consult on bills? 0% jealous, 1000% completely outraged.

purplehazed · 06/01/2016 12:19

Horseyhat who is actually saying they dislike anyone from the royal family. People dislike having such a ridiculous institution as a monarchy. Jealousy doesn't come into it. There are lots who dislike a conservative government. It that also because of "jealousy" and "envy"?

For who are things ok for ?

You will see very few permanent roles in certain sectors and usually ones that employ those who earn low wages

Very few people I know who work in the caring profession or in mental health few are now able to get permanent contracts do you understand how worrying it is not knowing if you shall have 30hours of work a week or 20 or 10 hours. It's a constant worry (especially as I am a sp) one I never thought I would have to be dealing with now since degree level retraining colleagues feel the same and have been working in mh for years

large number of mortgages been given are 95% or 100% with little or no deposit. Once again people are taking out huge loans they are unlikely to pay off it is only a few years ago that we were told this would never be allowed to happen again it's created a situation that can't continue and then there is the issue of working class being pushed out of London and other cities are following so no we are not doing ok we are country living on credit (and tending to the wants of the extremely wealthy foreign investors (who pay little or often no tax) with a growing disparity growing between rich and poor this simply should not be happening in 2016

And yes it's time we became a republic to keep financially and indulge the royal family in such a way is ridiculous we would lose little revenue our history is still what it was, the palaces will still be there but fully open to the public. I have meet far more foreigners that are bemused by our royals than impressed by them. Very few come here just to see the royals it's a plus if they do they come here for many many reasons I am sure out economy won't crash for the few hundred a year that come specially because we have a Queen (doubt the number is that high)

longtimelurker101 · 06/01/2016 12:23

The jealousy argument is rubbish, as most of us who object have pointed out the archaic institution that is the Royal family is a drain on public finances and an outrage in what is ostensibly a democracy.

Also the tourism argument has been devalued, the jealousy argument is erroneous, so what more do Royalists have?

redstrawberry10 · 06/01/2016 12:30

what more do Royalists have?

any second now someone will pop up with president Blair.

longtimelurker101 · 06/01/2016 12:33

That's easy to debunk as well, the Presidency could be non-executive like the Irish President.

Nice and easy :)

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/01/2016 12:33

Who wouldn't like to have enough money that you never ever ever have to worry about paying rent/mortgage/bills/essential shopping

That doesn't make you jealous because you would like to have that financial security

What the royals have is far far more than that and yet we keep giving them more money

longtimelurker101 · 06/01/2016 12:35

Oh and who would elect Blair? All those lovely republican lefties who were usually anti war anyway?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/01/2016 12:35

I would rather have a president Cameron and I am and always have been a labour voter

I have to choice to vote for someone to take his place

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/01/2016 12:38

I disagreed with the Iraq war. Would the Tories have not gone to war ?

I still supported other issues that the Labour Party stood for

longtimelurker101 · 06/01/2016 12:40

The Tories were keen supporters of the war, I'm still a Labour supporter despite it, I still don't think Blair would win a Presidential election.

We might get President Branson though.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/01/2016 12:45

I am sure we would have in 1997 Smile feeling nostalgic

longtimelurker101 · 06/01/2016 12:48

But, if we had a non-executive president, he would have still been Prime Minister in 1997. Doesn't have to work like the USA system.

HotNatured · 06/01/2016 12:52

Exactly Quornmakesmefart and lorelei9.

Oldsu what a load of obsequious, unctuous claptrap !!

regenerationfez · 06/01/2016 13:09

Even if we did have President Blair, his great grandchildren wouldn't be being supported and given numerous residences to live in when they weren't even heads of state Hmm

purplehazed · 06/01/2016 13:52

more than we give them. It's so simple. That's all there is to it. The Queen et al could easily say sod you all then and just live on her own income and screw us out of millions. laughing at the irony of the queen saying "sod you all" Grin wow how naive stupid some people are.

Every republican I have met in the UK has been week chinned and jealous, where as most monarchists I meet are either extremely patriotic, or just middle class people who don't trust those they consider below them and feel and wouldn't pertain the though that perhaps those people are below them and hence dreams of a class system.

If republicanism wants to get ahead it needs to capture the patriotic crowd, convince them it is the best thing for their country. As it stands the queen is excellent at filling this role, she is like the grandmother we all love and would die to protect, she fits a similar to the role to the founding fathers in american patriotism.

Ha. Do you want us all to post photos of our chins?

Or just snaps of us looking incredibly content with our lot but mildly disapproving of inherited privileged social status?

OnlyLovers · 06/01/2016 14:40

I'll admit that I am a bit on the weak-chinned side. And not because I'm of noble inbred blood.

I'm certainly not jealous of the royal family or their money, though.

purplehazed · 06/01/2016 14:43

Mildly disapproving is a far better look than deferential and awed.Grin
