iPad screen smashed...

Not having the best start to my new year Sad

Basically, I tripped and my iPad slipped and smashed.

Luckily, I'm covered by Apple Care plus which covers two incidents to accidental damage for a fee of £39. I called apple support and they said I would get a replacement iPad for £39 basically.

Now this is all great EXCEPT that the model I have (iPad mini 3) isn't sold anymore. They only have the 2 and the 4.

I'm very concerned I'll end up with one of those refurbished iPads and I REALLY don't want that. Sad

Someone I know who worked for the Apple Store in NY said that in the US, since I have Apple care plus, they would not replace it for the refurbished one, they would give me the iPad 4. Any chance UK might be the same?

Has anyone been through something similar? Anyone on here works for apple and can help?

And he's an apple certified fitter so it doesn't void the warranty 😊 It doesn't have to be an apple shop, just apple certified

Just had a scan of the T&Cs , I used to work in insurance and they have to replace your IPad with a new or refurbished IPad that has at least the same function as the one you're claiming for.

So you can object to a lesser operating system, but not a refurbished one.

On the subject of repairing broken iPad screens, please everyone be careful about sending your devices away to an online company called Fone Angels for repair.

I'm wondering if we're ever going to see dh's iPad ever again. Big mistake I fear Hmm.

When you say you've had problems with refurbished products before, were they from Apple? I've honestly never had an issue with a refurb direct from them and I say this as someone who isn't their biggest fan.

I doubt they'd just give you a 4 (it wasn't just a spec bump from the 3, which was a laughable upgrade from the 2) unless you pay extra. It would be worth paying extra though.

LivingInMidnight · 03/01/2016 14:53

Oh and also they will likely have stock of discontinued models anyway for situations like this.

Where are all these places fixing screens for £40?

Mine has been smashed for two years. And now the phone matches it Sad

Old iPad 2, well out of warranty. Same the iPhone 4S.

Anybody know a decent repair place in Cheshire?

Hurr1cane · 03/01/2016 16:37

Google iPad repair Cheshire and see if the companies have a Facebook page, check the reviews and read all the comments etc.

Fluffyears · 03/01/2016 18:35

Frisk, I stood on my laptop and cracked the screen, it cost me £99 at a computer repair place who cleaned it all as well. I tried to go through home insurance who were crap and it was £100 excess. So I paid £1 less and kept my premiums low.

Frisk · 03/01/2016 20:32

Thanks,Fluffy.
I'm not sure that it is worth it.

Cheshireblue · 03/01/2016 20:43

Whereabouts in cheshire are you? I've used a couple - clumsy family!

Nicebucket · 03/01/2016 21:41

I honestly don't understand the posters telling me to get it repaired from some random non Apple shop for £40, when I can get a new/refurbished one from Apple without voiding my warranty. Seems a bit illogical, but anyway...

Update: I got a brand new iPad mini 3! Turns out they don't sell them but they have stock for swaps and replacements.

Nice one. I couldn't fathom it either.
