UGGS ughghghghghgh

I thought Uggs had gone away, but they are back with a vengeance. My DD 13 yo spent most of her xmas money on a pair, on sale, and although, as she pointed out to me over and over that it was her money, I am still seething. I don't get the point. They are completely unsuitable for our climate, far too expensive, not even very comfortable, with no arch support etc. Also they are, stating the obvious, hideous. She could have got at least two pairs of weather-appropriate, pretty boots which she could actually wear. Her defense: they are fluffy and everybody has them.

I've had my uggs over 6 years now and they're still going strong- I love them!

rockabella · 01/01/2016 04:20

I would never let a child, even a teenager, wear Ugg boots as they can cause ankle and foot problems, as can any completely flat soled shoe. Ballet pumps also belong to this category!!

mathanxiety · 01/01/2016 05:22

Rust Oleum has some wonder product on the market that keeps all sorts of materials water repellent.

I love my Uggs and wear them through upper midwest US winters.

I've always been proud of my little claim to Canadian heritage via one great grandfather who was born in PEI. I suspect I have many distant relatives there and in Newfoundland.

popcornpaws · 01/01/2016 07:39

It doesn't matter what you think, your daughter spent the money on what she wanted and is obviously very pleased with them.
You saying what she could have bought is irrelevant, you are not her and never will be.
Let her enjoy her uggs and stop being so boring about them, do you really think your daughter cares about your opinion of them?

DizzyNorthernBird · 01/01/2016 08:56

I don't know why people have such a chip on their shoulder about Uggs. They're a functional boot, Ugg do what they can to make them look prettier but when it boils down to it their purpose is warmth, and they do it well.

No one seems to have a problem with snow boots or wellies......what's the issue with Uggs? If someone chooses to pay for the name that's up to them, just like if they decide to fork out for a pair of Hunters over garden centre cheapies......

Aeroflotgirl · 01/01/2016 09:03

Exactly Dizzy, they are comfortable, functional and hard wearing. They have branched out to include boots that are both fashionable and comfy, which is what I want. I do not want to get corns or bunions on my feet from badly made boots or shoes.

unimaginativename13 · 01/01/2016 09:08

If it was me at 13 I probably would have bought some ridiculously high inappropriate plastic footwear.

Id be glad if my DC invested in some UGGs. My mum hates my UGGs and I'm 30, she would still have me in Clarks.

Marshy · 01/01/2016 09:14

What 13yo girl wants a pair of 'sturdy' boots op? I actually can't stand that word - it makes me cringe. Damn it, I'm in my 50s and it's my aim never to own anything sturdy. Apart from my lovely walking boots but they're robust not sturdy Grin

Ditsy4 · 01/01/2016 09:40

By the way you can get Ugg insoles now, if the bottom wears away after years. My sister sent me some as these boots are 6 years old. I mostly wear mine in the morning and when I come home from work after being on my feet all day bliss! Occasionally wear them to work on very cold days. Keep me warm on playground duty :)

witsender · 01/01/2016 10:33

I had a pair of Uggs that lasted 5 years, great for winter dog walking. I actually just bought a new pair (£45 from Schuh imperfects! Amazing!) for work as we never have the heating on and it is notoriously COLD.

SquadGoals · 01/01/2016 11:28

Just bought the tall classic ones for £70.

They aren't to be worn outside, only in the house as slippers.

DH's identical pair have lasted 8+ years.

YABU. Each to their own.

noeffingidea · 01/01/2016 12:12

I'd love a pair of real uggs. I've only had cheaper versions (about £30) , which have never 'collapsed'. They haven't affected my feet or ankles, I can still walk perfectly well.
Dizzy it seems to be a mumsnet thing, along with hatred for maxi dresses. I see plenty of people wearing both around here (not at the same time obviously) and they look fine.

Sandbrook · 01/01/2016 13:38

I live in my UGGS in the winter. Have them for 6 years.

Does anyone know if you can machine them on a wool wash, they could do with a bit of a clean now

rockabella · 01/01/2016 14:32

I don't dislike the look of Ugg Boots, I've had a pair myself, but they are quite unsuitable for Scottish weather, and even with waterproofing. I stand by my point about how bad they are for your feet though, most podiatrists and doctors will say to avoid them, which as an Adult is fine, make an informed choice but for feet that are still growing? No chance.

blankmind · 01/01/2016 14:55

At 13yo, I'd have bought something skyscraperingly high and strappy, your dd has made a good choice.

I used Nikwax's suede and nubuck waterproofer on my suede skechers www.nikwax.co.uk/en-gb/productselector/waterproofing.php

SanityClause · 01/01/2016 15:35

Sandbrook, yes you can. Wash on a machine "hand wash" cycle, then stuff with scrunched up newspaper, and allow to dry naturally.

Remember to re-spray with waterproofing stuff, afterwards.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2016 15:46

I would buy real Uggs for my DDs if they weren't so expensive. I don't even spend that much on shoes/boots for myself. Luckily they haven't asked for them Smile

MrsTP I'm coming back late to the thread but we are going to be in Toronto - in my old neighbourhood, where I grew up. The kids will most likely end up at my old high school. Life coming full circle, it's a funny old feeling.

BessieBlount · 01/01/2016 16:51

We are just back from visiting good friends in Toronto, it was, Scarboro (is That how it's spelt?) lovely train ride from city centre along the lake. The underground shopping centre was strange though.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2016 17:08

Bessie you thank your lucky stars for it in the middle of winter when you have to go to client meetings. Not having to put on coat and boots and brave the elements is bliss.

EddieStobbart · 01/01/2016 18:09

I have a pair of Celtic Sheepskin Aqualamb boots - love them. So warm (don't wear socks with them, horrible with socks but fab without) and pretty much waterproof. My other boots look weird if my jeans aren't properly tight but with my "ugg" style boots they look fine with jeans that are a little bit looser.

Swampmonster39 · 01/01/2016 19:34

I used the waterproofing spray from poundland and its been fabulous!

Andylion · 01/01/2016 20:28

Bessie , it's Scarborough. Smile

BessieBlount · 01/01/2016 21:08

Thank, Andy. So spelt just like our Scarborough but pronounced Scarboro? I think I knew that anyway as I have visited and we send Christmas cards every year but I was just saying it in my head.

19lottie82 · 01/01/2016 22:53

squadgoals your HUSBAND has tall classic uggs? Tell me that's a typo, please! Shock

Sandbrook · 01/01/2016 23:12

Thanks Sanity clause
