UGGS ughghghghghgh

I thought Uggs had gone away, but they are back with a vengeance. My DD 13 yo spent most of her xmas money on a pair, on sale, and although, as she pointed out to me over and over that it was her money, I am still seething. I don't get the point. They are completely unsuitable for our climate, far too expensive, not even very comfortable, with no arch support etc. Also they are, stating the obvious, hideous. She could have got at least two pairs of weather-appropriate, pretty boots which she could actually wear. Her defense: they are fluffy and everybody has them.

Yes, there is a MEC close by, but ppl here get so weird and orgasmic when they talk about MEC that i don't like to be seen in it. Like the Farmer's market, you know.

But maybe for the Uggs...

Of all the nice warm stylish boots in the shops Uggs have to be the worst looking things. They make legs look short and stumpy plus I love the cankle inducing comment.

TwentyOneGuns · 31/12/2015 17:24

I agree re the sheeplike brand love of teenagers but I'm afraid I love my UGGs. They're warm and comfy and the genuine ones are a million times better than any other brand - my last pair saw me through 3 winters with pretty much day in day out wear. The care set is a pretty good investment. I'd wear them whether they were fashionable or not - actually I don't know if they are any more, there's certainly a lot of them in the sales - and I know they're not that flattering but I'm not sure I actually care :).

You don't like to be a sheep, do you OP? Grin Let your DD try sheepiness for a while. She's 13 and belonging is important. Grit your teeth and this too will pass.

19lottie82 · 31/12/2015 17:26

Sitting with mine on now. They are sooooo comfy. Don't regret buying them one bit! So yes, YABU!

Shortandsweet20 · 31/12/2015 17:26

Uggs won't do the whole ugg shuffle thing, they don't collapse. Mine lasted me 5 years worn in rain, snow, sleet you name it. I used the Clarks protecter spray!

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2015 17:27

I wouldn't want a pair. I just assumed they were a teenage girl thing.

I don't suffer from cold feet though. Grin

Grumpyoldblonde · 31/12/2015 17:27

Lexi very well said, agree totally, let the girl enjoy the boots she really, really wanted.

WoodleyPixie · 31/12/2015 17:29

Personally I dislike uggs asi find my feet get too hot however dd is 9 and loves hers. She has the usual ugg style but also the ones that look like nirmal leather biker boots but just with really cosy sheepskin insoles. Ideal for standing on the sidelines watching countless rugby matches for her brothers and dad.

Seeyounearertime · 31/12/2015 17:31

I got a fake pair for £10 and I live in them, totally comfortable, awesomely warm, totally not waterproof, OH well.
I can only imagine a proper pair for £100s would be even more comfortable and warm etc.

Maybe when I win the lotto I'll have a real brand name pair. Smile

Evelight · 31/12/2015 17:36

meh, I remember buying a fushcia-and-turquoise zebra print shiny crepe-de-chine dress as a teen- it was horrible- but I wore it and felt like a movie star. My poor mom, very fashionable in those days- never uttered a word. However I don't remember zebra print fuschia and turquoise being a teen trend.

yeah, the whole sheeple-ness is very annoying. We stand out a bit here anyway (weird foreign (English) accent, come-from-away etc) and it bothers me more than it should that now that DD has hit her teen years she tries to downplay it- eg she is extremely patriotic and proud of being Canadian etc, which I find a bit barf-inducing tbh, but I make sure never to comment on that.

My DP bought me a pair and they are sooooo comfy! I don't actually care if anyone thinks they are fugly, they are much sturdier than cheap fakes I've had previously and feel like walking on clouds Smile

I have cankles regardless - don't care much about that either.

I do understand how frustrating it can be when your DCs spend their money on things you can't appreciate, but if she has a couple of hundred to spend and that is the one thing she wants, saying no will just make her think you're being mean. Surely the spirit of Xmas is that people get the one thing that will make them happy?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 31/12/2015 17:37

And thanks for the tips to waterproof them!

Perfectlypurple · 31/12/2015 17:37

I had some ugg type boots once, just cheap ones and I hated them, they came down at the back, and just weren't comfy. Now I spent the money on decent ones they don't do that. Some things are worth spending money on. Oh and my Skechers were around £60 I think, much cheaper than uggs but still good quality.

applecharlotte · 31/12/2015 17:38

I didn't like how they looked and never thought I'd own a pair. I tried a pair on whilst in Office shopping for my DS and almost cried with pleasure. Sold. Seriously the most comfy, snug things you can put on your feet in winter.

I still don't really like how they look but don't care. Worth every penny for hours spent in the park.

thelaundryfairy · 31/12/2015 17:38

They are so warm and comfortable, I wear them throughout the winter apart from when I´m asleep or exercising. Mine have arch support.

BessieBlount · 31/12/2015 17:40

They're not at all fashionable in the UK. Quite the opposite I think. However, I still wear mine as they're incredible warm and comfy.
However mine are not those baggy things. I have the adult version of
these

Warm, cosy and fairly good in the wet I think.

Crispbutty · 31/12/2015 17:41

I wore my uggs (with denim shorts and vest tops) when I spent the summer in California... I loved them then and still do.. I like having warm feet! Grin

Evelight · 31/12/2015 17:41

Well, I didn't say no- and I went shopping with her to buy them, (so I "supported" her) but in hindsight I may have nagged rather more than absolutely necessary about how expensive/hideous/useless they were and how much of a sheep she was. Oh well.

Reading all these comments here about people actually enjoying their Uggs for their own sake and getting good use out of them, also the tip about waterproofing them, makes me feel much better.

OP posts:
Absofrigginlootly · 31/12/2015 17:42

I bought a pair of (I presume fake, although they quite often come from the same factory as the 'real' ones) uggs from the fake markets whilst in China....I call them my "chuggs" Grin..... They're real suede but only cost me about £25

I know what pp are saying about people walking on the ankles (hoe can you wLk like that?! Plus it looks shit) but I been careful to make sure mine don't bend like that so they stay nice and straight and I love them on dry, cold days.

OP she's excited about getting something her friends have, and at that price they'll feel very special to her. I remember having to beg and BEG my mum for a pair of kickers and I loved them to death when she finally relented. Don't take the shine off for her please!

Notso · 31/12/2015 17:42

I can see why you're annoyed. DD has been saying she needed a coat and trainers for ages and was waiting for Christmas money and sales to buy them.
She went shopping with her mates and bought two more pairs of black skinny jeans from topshop to add to her collection and blew £70 on Mac make up. Today it's pissing down and she was again moaning about the lack of warm coat and leaky trainers.
The sarky cow in me wanted to say well at least your make up is Mac even if your coat isn't a mac but I resisted. DD is 15, she's got plenty of time to make sensible purchases.

WRT Uggs they are horrible looking. To me they are slippers, my Grandma always wore them as slippers. Her niece in Austrailia used to send them over for her in the early nineties. I have a pair as slippers, they are cosy and warm but they'd not go anymore public than putting the bins out.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 31/12/2015 17:43

Dd bought another pair in the sales. So now she has normal ones and these new ones with bloody ribbons down the back! Which im concerned will rip, etc.

Anyway ive bought her an Ugg care kit, protector spray, brush, cleaner.

TheFairyCaravan · 31/12/2015 17:44

I've got 3 pairs. I couldn't give a shit what anyone thinks tbh. I've got severe nerve damage in my legs, my feet permanently feel like they're in a bucket of snow so at least I know they are warm in my Uggs. They aren't heavy either, my Celtic sheepskins are and I can't wear them, so I can actually pick my feet up.

Real Uggs don't collapse, you don't shuffle and they last for ages. DH bought my grey ones for me for Christmas in 2009, they're still going strong.
