To think Ross was a jealous control freak and Joey was a sex pest?

I was watching a Friends marathon last night as I had insomnia, and thought bloody hell, Joey was actually pretty creepy the way he would pursue women with his "how YOU doin'" line and do things like take down the shower curtain when he had a female roommate and ask her sex-related questions when interviewing for a new flatmate.

And Ross was bordering on psychotic with his sandwich fixation and jealousy of just about any guy Rachel interacted with. And also that weird overprotective thing when he first found out about Monica and Chandler. She was his sister, not his possession!

When he dated Janice he told Chandler that it was part of the "code" that you didn't date your friend's sister.

Barney in HIMYM was way worse than Joey because he more intelligent and cold hearted in his womanising.

MNetter15 · 28/12/2015 15:14

Joey over eating and fondness of food (possibly overweight)?was supposed to be endearing but Monica was humiliated and mocked about her issues with food, because she's a woman.

OryxNotCrake · 28/12/2015 15:19

I hadn't thought of that MNetter but you're right. Do you remember the mocking way Monica was treated over the Girl Scout cookies? The food-based jibes thrown in Joey's direction were always much more affectionate.

MNetter15 · 28/12/2015 15:22

Yes, absolutely!

Thisismyfirsttime · 28/12/2015 15:27

I hate Phoebe, she kept saying things that caused loads of trouble and no-one ever pulled her up on it. She told Chandler Monica wasn't looking for him on the night they got together and she told Chandler Monica had been to lunch with Richard. (There are more, I rant about this quite often but I can't remember now!) I'd be fuming with a friend that did that. And when she told Rachel she wasn't pregnant when she was, urgh, I hate her!

desperatehousewife2 · 28/12/2015 16:01

Totally agree with all the Phoebe criticism on here, she was definitely my least favourite. In fact I often wondered how they could be friends with her because she had very few redeeming qualities to her character.

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 16:07

I hated all the Ross/Emily London wedding stuff it was awful. Patsy Kensit was requested to be Emily first IIRC, I wonder if she would have been better.

lanadelreya · 28/12/2015 16:37

Ross made a huge big deal out of Monica and Chandler. Did you miss that episode?! He saw them through the window and charged over, banging on the door to be let in, chased Chandler around the apartment screaming MY SISTER. It was vile.

Key MN word there.

Well I just watched the clip on Youtube and it lasted all of 2 minutes.

The part where he "chased" him was 4 seconds long...

He also never screamed my sister whilst he was chasing him.

You really thought that was vile?

I think you might be quite a sheltered person.

I don't think anyone would want them best friend and sibling to hook up if they were just messing around because it could go very wrong.

But when he found out they weren't and were in love he accepted it straight away.

I'm no Ross fan but I do like to view things fairly

TooOldForGlitter · 28/12/2015 17:02

Wow. You're very invested in defending Ross!

My life is far from sheltered but thanks for that weird remark! Confused

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 17:13

I think it's just a TV programme. An old one at that.

Stokes · 28/12/2015 17:15

Eh, one of my dear friends married her brother's best friend. The brother was delighted when they got engaged and married and they're all very close now. But it took him a while to get his head around them dating at first, even though it had been obviously coming for years to the rest of us (all three are good friends of mine). I think that's fair enough.

Other than that, Ross is obviously a dick though Grin

Not at all, its one of my dislikes about this forum - when people state things as fact when all I had to do was watch a 3 minute clip to see most of what you said was inaccurate.

And to call that scene "vile" then yes you must have lead an extremely sheltered life.

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 17:30

Just one of your dislikes? Sad

flippinada · 28/12/2015 17:35

Is this a MN new thing? Taking an off the cuff comment on a (clearly) light hearted thread and try to pick an argument?

Wait, what am I saying, of course it is.

I liked Friends the first time round but it definitely doesn't stand up to scrutiny. It's very of it's time and dated. And yes Ross is a massive, massive twat! I was secretly hoping would tell him to fuck off and and have a fabulous time in Paris. Ugh.

And another thing..no-one has mentioned how awful they all were to Janice, Chandlers off and on girlfriend before Monica. Remember her?

And, and how come Rachel is a single mum and it barely impacts on her life at all?

And another...that bloody stupid plotline about Rachels boss trying to buy her baby.

I'm not engaging, sorry, I'm sure you can find someone willing though.

Shame that you chose to do this on a thread that could've been a bit of fun but that's what goes on here now isn't it.

flippinada · 28/12/2015 17:39

I was secretly hoping Rachel would tell him to fuck off. Clearly. Although, they all should have done.

Someone mentioned Everybody Loves Raymond upthread. I agree. Another teeth grindingly awful comedy with horrible contrived characters and tooth rottingly cutesy children.

TooOldForGlitter · 28/12/2015 17:40

I was referring to the character of Ross as vile and that scene was one of many examples. You know that though.

LynetteScavo · 28/12/2015 17:41

Yes the Ross Emily wedding was awful. Just awful.

I can relate to Ross and his control freak/sanwhich tendencies Blush

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 17:42

What was the one with James Belushi in?That was similar to Raymond.

I like The Middle but I am expecting MN to have huge issues with that too if it doesn't already.

Good job it's all pretend eh? Grin

flippinada · 28/12/2015 17:42

TooOld they are bloody everywhere now, ready to pounce when it looks like people might be in danger of having a laugh or enjoying themselves.

flippinada · 28/12/2015 17:43

Sparkling I can start on The Middle if you like...light heartedly of course! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 17:45

Ooh go on flippin indulge me. Grin

Lightbulbon · 28/12/2015 17:46

Compare it to when Ross dated Rachel's sister, Jill (Reece Witherspoon).

It was such a sexist show and those characters were role models to lots of young people.

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2015 17:47

Can fictional characters really be role models?
