To not tip my hairdresser?

Had my hair cut and coloured recently. Really pleased with it and limed the lady who done it. Was i being unreasonable for not leaving a tip. I felt it was expensive enough (£85) but have been thinking since was i being mean?

So do you tip your dresser and if so, how much?

I don't tip my hairdresser. But I do take them gifts from time to time.

I know their favourite drink is prosecco so took a few bottles to the salon last time.

Don't take gifts every time. But if it's their wedding anniversary or something I do

I don't tip. I pay for a service. The person doing their job is providing a service. Why would I pay extra for that?

If they do something extra special (helping me with the pushchair, getting something in just for me) I'd tip.

Haircuts cost so much these days - I go quite rarely because of the cost, so when I do go, I certainly can't afford to add a tip on top of the price as well. I don't really understand the logic behind giving a tip to your hairdresser anyway, to be honest.

It's about 5 years since I went to a hairdresser but I never tipped the stylists. I used to leave a small top for the juniors who did the hair washing etc as they tended to be on appallingly low pay, especially the apprentices.

I don't really have a set amount that I tip. Usually around £2_or £3. Not a lot, I know, but not a little either considering how expensive get your hair done is, and if they got £3 or even £2 off every customer. It would quickly add up.

I personally tip but I tip pretty much every good service especially if I know their basic is low! I give about 10% for both highlights and hair cut
But don't feel bad for not doing it, if you didn't want to at the time you must have had a good reason

£2-£3, but I use a local hairdresser and I only pay £45 for foils and blow dry.

I tip my current one because I know him very well and he is very good (independent one). Most I wouldn't, and even less likely the chains.

I would always tip the person who washed my hair and I would tip the stylist as long as they weren't the salon owner.

I'd usually give the junior €2 and the stylist €5. I tend to tip in beauty salons and nail places too.

It is a bit odd and I don't really like having that sort of dynamic between me and the person providing the service, it feels a bit master/ servant-ish. I don't know why I do it. At the last minute I feel a bit mean if I don't.

I always tip £5. I assumed it was the norm. I think my mum always tipped.

I'm going to stop tipping. The salon I go to have announced another price increase after Christmas so highlights, cut and blow will now be £120. I was leaving longer and longer between visits as it was, I think it's now extortionate.

I don't often tip as I can barely afford to get my hair done as it is, I do on occasion tip if I feel I can afford it and usually at Xmas I do. However I had my hair done a couple of weeks before Xmas and in the process of paying, my hairdresser made such obvious hints about a Christmas tip that I put the fiver I was just starting to get out of my purse back in. Didn't like being pressurised into it.

I too always tip £5. I'm very surprised that it wouldn't occur to people to tip hairdressers as it's very much the norm, same as it is to leave a tip for good service in a restaurant.

Always tip a tenner on top of a £100 cut and colour.

I always leave a few quid. Not for the actual hairdressers, but for the junior who takes my coat / washes my hair.

I tip 20% but that's because the prices are really low and I love my hairdresser.
I never tipped in chain places though.

I've never tipped and I hadn't even realised anyone did tip before MN.

My hairdresser is the owner of her salon. If she doesn't make enough from cutting my hair she's free to put her prices up, so I don't really get why I'd tip. She's very good though, she could easily charge double.

I don't, a cut/colour/highlights takes around 2 hours max depending on number of other customers. The dye would be a few pounds so the rest is for the service. It's way more per hour than many jobs and they are just providing a service that is paid for.

I tip or gift people who go above and beyond, not for a service I've already had to pay for.

Always. He does a good job. I like him. I also give a ££ to the trainees who do the washing too.

Wow shocked what people pay. I used to pay less than £10 for wet cut and no tip? Recently moved to near a hairdressing college and had really good wet hair cuts for £0. Mind you at easter i did give young girl a £1 easter egg. I couldnt have my hair cut ever if it was more than £10.

Interesting thread this. I have full head highlights and cut blow dry every 6 weeks. Costs me £120.00. The whole boring episode tales around 4 hours. I always tip £5 sometimes £10 depending how i feel. But after chatting with friends recently they recon im mad. I always come out of salon happy but have been thinking about this myself lately. I think im going to cut back to a few quid. OP do what you feel is right for you. There is no right or wrong way.

I never tip. I think its embarrassing giving someone 2/3 pounds after you already paid for your haircut. I am pretty sure its just us copying the Americans.

Agree flat there is no right or wrong way. If op is happy with the service its her money.
