AIBU?

To have bought the majority of 2016 Christmas presents

Online, in the sales without leaving the comfort of my sofa?

Bargains include:

Half price Playmobil from Boots
Half price handbags and make up brushes from Debenhams
Half price VTech toys at Debenhams and some Disney stuff too
30/50% of jumpers from M&S
Massively discounted smellies from Tesco

And now I feel incredibly smug with my bargains, plus I remembered to use quidco Xmas Smile

Has anyone else done the same or am I the only mad one?

YANBU. I'm doing the same.

And the pp saying OP's presents are cheap and not thoughful - do get over yourselves.

Good for you OP. I got loads of toiletry gift sets this year and I love them as everyone got me my favourite brand. A gift set doesn't necessarily mean that no thought has gone into a gift.

Some stuff doesn't go out of fashion so also fine to buy, as long as you accept you may need to change some items (my mum bought me some clothes in the January sales last year for this Christmas but I'm now 3 dress sizes smaller!).

What are these mythical, fantastical presents that people will buy in Nov 2016? Branded tat from the next Disney movie?

Classic stuff does not go out of fashion.

Yes. You will have bought generic thoughtless tat. Playmobil isn't just playmobil- if you want a fairy set then a unicorn one just isn't the same etc. Buy less and choose well. It will al just get re-gifted.

Maybe kids should be taught to be grateful and just say thank you for what they're given

I think board games, bath sets, makeup brushes or beauty items like straighteners, popular brands like lego, playmobile, Christmas themed jumpers/pyjamas/wrapping paper etc. are all safe bets. My DCs and I would be happy with any of that so not thoughtless at all. Confused

And it would mean that nearer the time you could just spend on the few items they have specifically requested (like particular playmobile sets as mentioned upthread) because you've bought most of the other items that bulk out their present quantity.

Blimey, there's some nasty comments on here!

I do the same OP and I certainly don't buy "generic random tat" (how rude)... for example last year I got a lovely Swarovski necklace for a friend, a designer purse for SiL and a pair of lovely silver earrings for another friend...all hugely discounted which meant my budget could stretch a lot further and I was able to get much nicer presents that I would if I'd left it until right before Christmas and panic bought.

Please check dates on any smellies and bath things. Alot of things have a shelf life of 6-12 m before they start being not so kind and gentle on your skin, esp for kids.
I have a friend who gifts us christmas castoff gift sets for birthdays throughout the year. Its not my cup of tea snd goes straight to the charity shop. Impersonal and cheap with no thought but thats just me.

A good quality make up brush will last years. If someone is serious about make up brushes they would value 1 really good one above a cheaper half price set. I cant see how make up brushes are a safe bet for anyone- many would send them straight to the charity shop. They are a buy well and buy once item- not a pile them high because they are cheap item.

The OP asked AIBU to buy presents now. People are responding to that with their views- so all the people who are criticising views of others should remember that the point of AIBU is for people to give their views!!!

I would hate to do that and would find it a bit joyless, tbh.
I like Christmas shopping, mid December, but don't have many folks to buy for and we don't go crazy with volume, so it's always quite chilled.
I'm happy for you that you are happy but I don't get why you'd be smug.

Agree industrial, bath sets from Tescos and generic make up brush sets would be donated here too. Little thought and not something that says I put any effort into this gift.

Added the that, toiletries that are stored for a long time change, they can lose colour and smell.

How can you possibly know what people will want in 12 months time? Confused - or what they will already have by then?

I think it depends on the person.
My dd will be 4 next Christmas so will be a prefect age for playmobil.

I wouldn't know what to get my teen dd yet, however have made an amazon list of ideas for her.

My kids don't write Christmas lists. I have always picked there gifts.

My youngest is only a baby this year so doubt he will have many interests next Christmas. Easy to buy for early.

When I said makeup brushes are a safe bet I was meaning a good quality one, industrial, but one that you happen to pick up now in the January sales v. paying full price for.

YABVU. I would never do that as kids and adults can change a lot in a year.
Also I got some stuff in sales online a couple of weeks before Christmas this year. Which meant I didn't have lots or stuff cluttering up the house for months

Whoever wanted make up brushes, which would be useless to me btw, I don't wear make up, Amazon had some on a deal I think.

I'm always glad when my house isn't full of hidden Christmas presents, why would I want to hide another years worth of Christmas presents.

Wow only read first page but people were desperate to rain on your parade.

Sounds very organised and great idea :)

I probably wouldn't buy gifts for next Christmas already - as pp's have said, styles and people's tastes can change too much in a year. However, nothing wrong with keeping an eye out for bargains for birthdays in the next few months - was hoping a wooden train set for DD1 would be reduced for her birthday in January!

I found some really nice xmas cards reduced from £4 for 12 to 40p. I picked up 4 packs before I had to admit I don't have that many friends Sad.

I just kept one pack. Even that's pushing it Grin

I was a size 18 one January. I lost 3 stone that year and was absolutely delighted with my new size 10/12 figure at Christmas time. Opened one present from a relative to find it was a size 18 t-shirt for Christmas. She prides herself on doing her Christmas shopping in the January sales. It didn't matter to her that the present was absolutely no bloody use to me. I was expected to smile and say "thanks".

So good for you, but I'm not a fan of Christmas shopping in January

Buying Christmas presents from September, possibly August, onwards is ok in my book.
But January? That's just odd.

Report
TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 15:54

Why is it odd? It means you don't have to spend loads in December

Report
limitedperiodonly · 27/12/2015 16:01

It doesn't have to be cheap tat. I rarely buy clothing full price, because the kind of clothes I like, I can't afford full price. I just don't buy high fashion items in sales, everything else lasts, doesn't it? Or do you throw jumpers, coats and shoes away because you've had them a year?

I wouldn't buy xmas presents and store them for a whole year but that's mainly because I just want to buy things for myself.
