Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

Oh for fucks sake Brand you could say that about anyone - they're not experiencing discrimination, it's just a coincidence that they're black and disabled.
Ego worked before so presumably no competency issues there. But give her a good kick when she's down why don't you.

Perhaps Ego was interviewed by people like you Brand. Who knows?

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 16:30

Yes because you know me so well due to the fact I find certain things funny. But your assuming you know what I find funny even when I've repeatedly said I don't find Jim Davidson funny according to some posters I do. But hey don't let facts get in the way of feeling morally superior. 👌

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 16:32

I based my comment not on what you find amusing but your apparent lack of interest in or understanding of equality and diversity issues.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/12/2015 16:33

You people who don't have a titter at a madelaine mcann joke in the staff room or an autschwitz joke are soooo boring!

We on the other hand lead far superior lives!

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 16:33

Ok sooty. Btw did you use to go by the username lovebunny?

Missing the point as usual helmet.

Making a mccan joke in a staffroom unacceptable, playing a card game in the privacy of your own house where mm is a funny answer = acceptable. Anyway don't let that get in your way of thinking we shout out racist shit in the middle of the street. Although maybe since only a few people understand what context means you genuinely can't comprehend Shock

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 16:37

No. MNHQ would be able to confirm that I have never name changed in the years I've been here.

What a strange question to ask.

Although maybe since only a few people understand what context means you genuinely can't comprehend How very sophisticated of you. I can't imagine any context where Madeleine McCann jokes are funny. I wouldn't even share any of my views of that case IRL or on the internet.

How do you mean missing the point?

Oh I see mcann jokes are v funny at home but not funny in the workplace?

Do people genuinely think their lives are so much more interesting than others because they love giggling about gas chambers (at home or at work)?

mudandmayhem01 · 28/12/2015 16:46

I bet the op has gone long ago after this has descended into this strange bickerfest. But if you are still here you are not being over sensitive about jokes referring to your Chinese heritage.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 16:47

As I said before having to watch your step and pretend to be a different person at work must be exhausting.

derxa · 28/12/2015 16:51

ilovesooty I think one of the prerequisites of being a teacher is having respect for yourself and other people.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 16:52

I would also have thought that to be the case derxa.

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 16:56

Me and brand clearly don't respect anyone, live double lives that would make a spy blush and shout abuse at people in the street.

We've been rumbled.

or we just have a different sense of humour to you

Which is why brand and I have insisted it's important to know that the person you're saying it to will find it funny

You'd hope though that none of them work with vulnerable people.
