Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

Well Tali I hope that the people you hang out with who find racist jokes funny are worth it. As I've said and as Ego mentioned anything that gets shared on social media can cause you to be placed under disciplinary procedures at work. And if you really think you can't be caught out you're naive. It says rather a lot about your attitude that you'd think it necessary to hide your humour from your employer.

Brand only thinks her workplace "probably" has an equality and diversity policy. She obviously has no idea what it says so you're probably right there Ego

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 15:34

Ego in the context of playing the game it is

Would you like your tutors or future employer to know you play the game and find it amusing Tali?

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 15:36

sooty I hide almost everything on my Facebook, I don't think an employer has any right to know my private life.

And you're the naive one if you honestly think teachers, doctors, managers, nurses etc don't have a laugh at offensive jokes out of work.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 15:38

Oh. You haven't been introduced to such a concept as a social media policy then?

Sooty yes companies have them. Which is why my account is private.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 15:40

I'm not that involved with words on a screen to get upset and defend to the detriment of myself.

I wouldn't be friends with po faced straight laced sort of people that couldn't crack a smile at a card game or a kat Williams skit but I don't care what tickles your funny bone so I'm not sure why you care what tickles mine.

And like I said before, white middle class people who are friends with other white middle class people just won't get it. Ego you were a white middle class man who went to boarding school, it doesn't really matter about the trans thing you were one of the most privileged in society. Your opinion on racist jokes is just that an opinion you formed due to your upbringing of being a white privileged male. I'd prefer to laugh at humorous stuff with my misfit bunch of mates from all walks of life and all ethnicities without any of us getting offended and laughing about stereotypes.

Yes they all piss their pants at jokes about Auschwitz and missing 4 year old girls.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 15:42

Gormless yes because that's not disablist language at all....

You've now shot your argument to pieces by using that word as an insult.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 15:42

One or two people in my company have been disciplined or even sacked on account of their social media accounts. I imagine they thought they'd hidden everything too.

There is something known as bringing your employer into disrepute you know. And teaching is just about the last profession where you can afford to be seen or heard bantering about minority groups in your free time.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/12/2015 15:42

I've always wondered who still likes Jim Davidson. Now I know.

Sooty I have played that game with teachers. Qualified experienced ones.

Everyone thought it was funny.

Brand completely agree.

Goodness knows what kind of teachers you hang out with Tali

Let's hope for your sake your banter isn't overheard in a local pub and reported.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 28/12/2015 15:48

Thankfully most people I hang out with have a sense of humour and don't get offended by absolutely everything.

I honestly struggle to believe you're 22. Maybe I'm misremembering.

derxa · 28/12/2015 15:48

That doesn't stop them being twats. I'll bet they don't share these jokes in the staffroom.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 15:48

Or actually it is.

I work in a school with dc who have autism and behavioural problems. If I used that word to describe someone I'd probably be sacked. It is disablist, it's another word like mong or calling someone mental.
