Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

itsmine not really, it was just at that particular time it was sensitive. That's why it's important to know your audience

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/12/2015 14:56

I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is easily offended though

The Bernard Manning defence.

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 14:57

Lass you don't find any of these funny? distractify.com/humor/2015/04/19/bestest-cah-combinations-1197892589

Tali

Can you seriously not see the problem with you repeatedly whining about being attacked just for finding jokes aimed at you funny, while continually banging on about how every other fucker should take jokes about themselves, and desperately trying to prove how cool you are to be so unoffended by things, like a bloody 15 year old?

Oh I wouldn't make a racist joke that my multicultural group of friends would find unpleasant... oh but isn't everyone who can't take a joke so frightfully boring, their lives must be so dreadfully dull, here, look at these jokes I find hilarious, weirdly enough they all involve racism or shock value because I'm so advanced in my comedic tastes...

mudandmayhem01 · 28/12/2015 15:06

I have gone off cards against humanity, played a couple of times and thought it was quite funny, but now its everywhere and loads of bigotted fuckers seem to use it as an excuse to be racist, homophobic and sexist and not funny at all. Its had its day.

derxa · 28/12/2015 15:09

Its had its day. That's what my 24 YO DS said. The jokes are pathetic and juvenile rather than shocking.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/12/2015 15:10

Eh, this isn't the same tali who was calling everyone prejudiced and racist on a thread about mental health and she was so very saddened by the lack of understanding?!!

Blimey!!

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 15:11

Sense I've not said I've been attacked and I've not whined about it. Myself and a couple of other posters just said that we share offensive jokes among friends and it's a bit silly to get annoyed about a joke.

Different people find different things funny. Simple.

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 15:13

Helmet massive difference between actual discrimination and a joke, I've said that several times already. Some people can't tell the difference.

A (stupid) joke about mental health I've seen: I hate being bipolar, it's great!

Actual discrimination: all people with MH problems are dangerous and I wouldn't date one just in case as I once knew an uncles friends brother with OCD who stole a TV.

don't think people have an issue with that. You're laughing with and sharing the experiences of a group.

People do though sooty repeatedly told me I was wrong to not be offended at jokes that were taking the piss out of my ethnicity and sharing them with friends.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 15:20

I'm not sure why you take everything I say as a person attack on you ego. It's not just this thread and it's not just me I've noticed it a few times with you. It's a chat forum it's not an attack ego whenever someone has a different opinion then you. Maybe step away from the keyboard if you can't detach what others think and think it's always direct correlation to you.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 15:21

Always in direct correlation**

Its not the thread to post about your love of off humour, or your superiority over people who dont find it funny.

Divide and Conquer only works if A) People are dumb fuck enough to fall for it and B) Spiteful enough to go along with it.

Some people need to be superior to others, which explains why they find those jokes funny in the first place.

itsmine you'd be surprised. Thankfully most people I hang out with have a sense of humour and don't get offended by absolutely everything.
