Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

Ego I'd never say something I wouldn't say in front of my friends of all ethnicities if that makes sense?

What do you think of games like cards against humanity?

They are funny in the context of the card game.

You'd have to play it to get it.

Yes I don't think I can imagine you sat round my table having a rum n coke playing this game ego. Grin I can't imagine you drinking or letting your hair down if I'm honest.

Thinking about this probably to deeply but it's very irritating that certain posters can get het up over what others find funny even if they're the butt of the joke but won't admit to white privilege, insidious racism and snobbery over pierced ears in other cultures, the way food is prepped in other countries, how it's easier to get a job interview with a white name then a black, how afro hair is seen as unprofessional in a work place, black boys being stopped and searched, ownership of their bikes always in question blablabla but they can care about a joke.

If you notice with comedy sketches with black comedians they might be making stereotypical jokes but they also point out the racism in society in a funny way. Black while driving for example or Muslim while flying. Joking about these things gets it across to people who may not of realised about what others go through. But some posters are so po faced they will care about a joke and not the people the jokes about. I know what side I'd rather be on.

Iggi999 · 28/12/2015 12:43

Who on this thread does any of that apply to? Confused
It is commonly accepted that forms of hate speech come before active discrimination anyway, so people conceited with this are more likely to be concerned about the rest, not less.

Iggi999 · 28/12/2015 12:43

People concerned, not people conceited

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 12:47

I don't think I've seen a poster justifying those things yet disapproving of racist jokes so I'd really like some examples of what these "certain posters" are alleged to have done.

derxa · 28/12/2015 12:50

Who are these people?

They're funny in the game, yeah.

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 13:00

itsmine most people can laugh at themselves, I laugh when I'm the butt of jokes as well as when other people are the butt of the jokes

ShortcutButton · 28/12/2015 13:50

Totally totally agree with your post brand

MN is so hypocritical when it comes to racism

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/12/2015 14:06

Derxa I had not heard of Cards Against Humanity but I'm struggling to see how any of the sample answers listed could be funny.

I googled it and here is a link to some of these cards and answers. I did not find any of them funny. They puerile rather than egregiously offensive.

People can have fun, get drunk without being racist or sexist. It is possible

piss taking 'humour' aimed at people isnt clever or funny

Both well said and succinct . It is depressing they need to be said.

I have to admire the nerve and audacity of the attack as defence going on now, whilst being wholly unconvinced by it.

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 14:16

I just laughed at that link Lass which just goes to show people find different things funny

Had never heard if that game before - i don't think i could guffaw at the mirth that is MMcCann, Jade Goodies remains or the Holocaust.

Behooven · 28/12/2015 14:38

Great fun playing that game last night

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 14:39

You'd be surprised Bam Grin

I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is easily offended though. Even I had to remove one card once (it was something about "aborted fetuses" and we didn't know if I was having a miscarriage).
