Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

If any parent had seen some of the staff on a night out, I think they would have been surprised. The bloody innuendos

I've found this as well Grin

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 10:40

I've worked in quite a few places. Teachers are the worst for innuendos. (how's that for a stereotype Grin)

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 10:40

Flat the funny thing is on here I called out some blatant discrimination a few days ago and got told I was being dramatic. This thing was making sweeping generalisations about a group and judging their character from it

Yet here people are getting panties in a twist over a joke

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:42

Ego
That is my point. Cant say this, cant say that! Oh but he or she can say it and its bloody OK Confused
Worlds gone mad

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 10:42

Too PC

Here we go again... Hmm

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 10:43

Yes or have a megaphone and shout out potatoes through the car window while driving along...

Oh god I nearly spat my drink out Grin

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:43

Taliz
Its bloody ridiculous isnt it!

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 10:44

It is!

I don't understand why some people can't tell the difference between discriminating against someone and joking

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:46

Ego

I see the difference and I agree it's important to know how the joke will be taken before you say it

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:50

Ego
I am sure you are a lovely person. But basically being around you requires walking on eggshells and kid gloves by the sound of it.

This reminds me of once when I was a teenager I made a generic your mom joke to a guy I knew at college and he went up the wall claiming I was personally insulting his mum when in reality id have said it to anyone Grin

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:57

Ego
I know we all different. But my friends and I rip the piss out of each other. Thats what makes our night out fun. Laughing at each other. Same at our office. We laugh at each other and with each other.

That is typical of someone with a lack of sense of humour. People need to lighten up.

SecretBondGirl · 28/12/2015 11:01

Sadly as shown by this thread there will always be people who will defend to the death their right to be racist, sexist, disabilist, homophobic by saying it's only a joke Hmm

derxa · 28/12/2015 11:10

The difference is that Ego knows not to tell offensive jokes that might hurt someone.

Everything is 'bantz' nowadays. Especially on social media. Nasty little people sitting behind at keyboards telling 'jokes'

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 11:17

There's a massive difference between being discriminatory and sharing offensive jokes among friends

Ego I dunno, my group of friends is multicultural so I don't think I'd feel comfortable with that. Then again if it were my regular friends just no block people happened to be present, I suppose so

I generally think if no one is offended and no one holds those views seriously it's fine

Iggi999 · 28/12/2015 11:44

Innuendo, banter, sarcasm etc etc - all possible without displaying prejudice against people who have protected characteristics.

It really, really is possible to have a good laugh, tell jokes etc without involving racism, sexism, homophobia, disablism. I can't believe I've needed to type that in 2015 actually.
