Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

Does your workplace have an equality and diversity policy, Flat?

TaliZorah · 28/12/2015 10:21

Cards against humanity Grin

Reminded me I need to get that game, I currently rely on friends bringing it

I agree with Ego about that actually.

Probably. Everything is top notch and by the book. Why is that?

sooty why do you have a problem with jokes between friends? None of us have said to just go out shouting potentially offensive jokes

Iggi999 · 28/12/2015 10:30

You sound dangerous in your thinking. Racist for one group but not the other
Ego explained her thinking well. You don't get it.
I suspect there are some occupations where mocking accents, telling Irishman jokes etc (which are racist) are acceptable. I'm glad I work in the relatively enlightened atmosphere of a school. If I made fun of a student's accent I'd rightly be disciplined.

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:31

Ego
I am truly sorry you went through all that shit and it still affects your life now Thanks
My point was people reading too much into certain jokes.
None of us are going to find every joke funny.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 10:33

Yeah because teachers never go out after work get pissed and crack jokes.

I work in a school, I've worked in a few schools. We go out for drinks, works parties ect and the banter flows. It's an equal thing no one is saying to mock people your in charge of or have responsibilities for. We are talking about jokes between family and friends.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2015 10:34

I don't have friends who think that kind of humour is amusing Tali
I wouldn't be able to do my job with integrity if I did. And if anyone I'm associated with on social media told those sort of jokes I'd be unfriending them immediately. I'd probably do the same if I thought the humour of people on their friends list was like that too.

ShortcutButton · 28/12/2015 10:34

Tbh white peoples opinions on what is or isn't racist is pretty much irrelevant

Only the 'oppressed' groups opinion has validity. And of course that's never going to be a uniform opinion

Brand i don't get why some people don't get that! No one has said go out shouting offensive comments at work...

FlatOnTheHill · 28/12/2015 10:36

Ego
You said you heard a good trans joke because it made you laugh.
If I as a (non trans) made that same joke would you think I was out of order?

Sooty then in my opinion you sound incredibly boring. Which is fine, you probably think I'm a cunt or something.

I have friends from all walks of life. We all insult each other. We all laugh.

Much better to have a sense of humour than to spend your life miserable because someone told a joke you don't like

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 10:38

Yes or have a megaphone and shout out potatoes through the car window while driving along...

I think on the whole some people are too PC.
