Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

Romesh Ranganathan the comedian is Indian. He has appeared at the Apollo and many tV shows. He is so funny. He takes the piss out of Indians (and he is indian) plus White people and black people. You can see every colour sitting in the audience wetting themselves laughing. Would you call him racist?

Joking - as you put it - between colleagues also depends on your workplace policy.

The sort of jokes which take the piss out of minorities are unacceptable in my workplace.

And Brand my friends are not all white and middle class - however you define that.

Im blonde and Essex. Ive always had the piss taken out of me.
Im not thick or stupid by any means but because of my accent. I do get it! Am I offended when I have been referred to a couple of times as having a blonde moment! Of course not. Its a joke referring to someone who is thick!
Im not thick, they know im not thick, its a joke!

Oh he's hilarious flat, there's another one I can't remember his name but his dad's white swiss and his mums black south African. His jokes about being mixed race during apartheid are really funny. Mocking situations you've been in is funny. Jim Davidson style mocking others isn't.

I'm blonde and I make blonde jokes, I also have a stutter sometimes and can't pronounce certain words properly. I had my dm in tears of laughter Christmas trying to say a word. I wasn't offended, in fact I couldn't stop laughing at myself and the tears were rolling down my face. I genuinely thought a chihuahua had an extra chi at the start and I couldn't get this word out. According to some on this thread I shouldn't be laughing at myself and I should be offended at my mum laughing at me.

So basically you are saying an Indian comedian can take the piss out of indians and whites and thats ok. But if its black then its racist.
You sound dangerous in your thinking. Racist for one group but not the other!
Confused

Brand you might not have been talking about the workplace but others were indicating that this sort of conversation livened up dull days in the office. As I said- unacceptable in my office and it doesn't stop us having fun at work.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/12/2015 10:02

Your deliberately missing the points I've made ego in your quest to be superior and morally right.

You say you would get really upset if someone laughed at you if you couldnt say something properly. I think reading all your comments that you have insecurity issues.

I have never worked in an office where the boss has done this to a new person. Again, you are making a scenario up!
Of course a new person is not going to have the piss taken out of them.
That sort of joking happens when you have been there quite a while and people know you more and if you are the type that can take a joke or not.

Flat you sound like someone I'd be friends with. It's ok to laugh at dark situations and crack jokes about our own stereotypes or friends.

Obviously is they were offended they wouldn't be cracking jokes about themselves or even being our friends. Not everything has to be pc all the time.

Now cards against humanity anyone?
