To be amazed at the amount of 'stuff' left in the shops

Just that really - I went into town and all the shops had shelves full of gifts/ decs etc.

Then went Tescos and I've never seen so much veg in my life- at 5pm.

Have the retailers really got it that wrong?

There's going to be some mammouth sales.

Why go to Tescos for wrapping paper.. do you have a Home Bargains nearby?

Readysteadyknit · 23/12/2015 23:59

Mistress I live in the middle of nowhere and made a trip to tesco for food. It's a 14 mile + round trip to somewhere like Home Bargains which would negate any savings

antimatter · 24/12/2015 00:09

I bought 2 lovely red cabbages at my Sainsbury's tonight. I am glad I didn't have to scrape the bottoms of veg containers.

I am very happy shopper! I got everything I wanted. They were running short of eggs but that was the only item I thought they may run out of soon.

There were many people shopping after 9 PM (this shop opened till 10).

MistressoftheYoniverse · 24/12/2015 00:12

Oh No! ..so sorry what a pain Sad..is the Tesco in a retail park or just on its own if a M&S is nearby they are pretty decent with wrapping paper or Argos..

WhenWillYouMakeMyTelephoneRing · 24/12/2015 00:12

Carrots were the one item on my list I couldn't get yesterday. Need to hunt some down tomorrow or we'll be leaving leeks out for Rudolph Xmas Confused

gaggiagirl · 24/12/2015 00:13

Our local morrisons sadly closed down 3 weeks ago. The only shop in town is an independent freezer shop (like farm foods or herron) it was stocked to the gills with discounted party foods last week. Nowt in today. Nowt! I have NO CHEESE!!!!!!! Aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!

Kelsoooo · 24/12/2015 00:35

Well our local tesco certainly has too many gift sets. All down to £3 or less.

Im going tomorrow for Croissants, goose fat, milk, coffee (the au pair is away so can buy posh cofee and it will last for longer than 35hours) and lambs navy rum cream.

I will more than likely buy a reduced turkey (because why not) and other shit I don't need. Last year tesco was dead as a door nail and everything super cheap.

Kelsoooo · 24/12/2015 00:36

Also, a red cabbage has randomly appeared in my fridge.

I don't know who put it there. Or why. I hope I'm not meant to do something with it.

Readysteadyknit · 24/12/2015 00:42

Kelsoooo try delia's braised red cabbage - delicious with turkey

Kelsoooo · 24/12/2015 00:45

ohhh bloody heck that looks nice! i will do that.

Sansoora · 24/12/2015 00:47

I dont live in the Uk and everything we get Christmas wise has to be imported and only starts arriving about 4 weeks prior to Christmas with fresh stuff coming about 3 days beforehand. The amount of stuff still left in our shops is shocking, and its across the board. When usually the shelves would be cleared. It used to be you couldn't get tins of sweeties etc for love nor money if you weren't at the stores the day the things arrived but this years there's shelves full of them left. There are no shortages and when I spoke to the manager of one store yesterday he told me 'sales are very down madam'.

Im assuming its because we're about to enter a recession here and people are already being careful with money.

TheExMotherInLaw · 24/12/2015 00:48

Our local small town was very quiet today - Iceland almost deserted, Lidl and Tesco were fairly quiet. There were piles of discounted veg, already, although that might be something to do with having had a power cut all day on Monday. I only popped in for a few last minute things - yet still forgot the veg gravy granules - sending dh in tomorrow, just in case it's chaotic - I think most Tesco are open 6am til 7pm, then open again on Boxing day.

WahhHelpMe · 24/12/2015 00:51

I did click and collect shopping all of the usual Christmas goods were in the only substitutions were toilet paper, melt in the middle chocolate puddings and original Pringles out of a £300 shopping list

NewBallsPlease00 · 24/12/2015 01:01

Because of how the BH days fall tomorrow will be a big food retail day too

ShelaghTurner · 24/12/2015 01:26

I was in Tesco about an hour ago and it was pretty busy but completely devoid of any useful items. Veg and fruit aisles were empty, I had to hunt down a lone carrot for Rudolph.

I bought ice cream and salted caramel sauce. Sod everything else! Grin

ToastedOrFresh · 24/12/2015 01:47

I live overseas. New Zealand to be precise. I live in a small town so this morning the supermarkets weren't as crazy as they are going to get. However, the supermarket had deliberately used mobile shelving to extend an aisle just as queue management around the tills.

Also, an employee was walking past the people queuing encouraging people to go to the self checkouts. One bloke just didn't want to and said no thanks. The employee was quite keen on him going and remarked that there was someone there to help him. She didn't drag him off but it was pretty close to it !

VenusRising · 24/12/2015 02:21

I got a delicious pot of fancy brandy vanilla cream today as well as three bags of sprouts and parsnips.
Well pleased I was. Totally forgot the carrots.

Got to hunt down some oranges / satsumas and carrots tomorrow.
Elbows and Javelins at the ready!

Xenadog · 24/12/2015 05:03

We went to the butcher in town at about 4:00pm and then to Morrisons. The butchers was fine and then so too was the supermarket. We could have bought everything for Christmas from Morrisons. That's what the supermrkets aim for I think - that 4:00pm on Christmas Eve you could still go in and buy a full Christmas dinner.

There was no panic buying anywhere but we couldn't get venison from the
butchers so maybe a venison vexation?

BalloonSlayer · 24/12/2015 05:38

I am up early to pop to Sainsbury's when it opens at 6am. < blinks blearily >

I've done this for the last few years and it's great - shop is practically empty and has been fully re-stocked overnight.

I announced this plan in smug fashion to the checkout lady when I was last in and she looked at me like I was crazed and said that last year Christmas Eve was really quiet all day. Ah. Confused

WahhHelpMe · 24/12/2015 05:51

Just done the butcher run, 100% prepared for Christmas now, like I said earlier everything was "in stock" click and collect so whilst I was anticipating an all night hunt for stuff I'm happily surprised for once, although dates are a bit iffy, a Christmas cake seems to go out of date on the 25th no matter the day you buy it, it seems Hmm

Narp · 24/12/2015 06:06

M&S was packed to the rafters yesterday.

Sincerely hope they donate leftover staff to food banks or homeless charities

SouthWestmom · 24/12/2015 06:09

Yesterday everything useful (pyjamas) was gone but there was a load of Christmas tat left everywhere. Nothing really reduced though so I reckon the sales are going to be full of themed items - cushions, throws etc

aquashiv · 24/12/2015 06:19

Well thank feck for that as I've not a sprout bought yet.

Sansoora · 24/12/2015 06:22

Aqua I imagine that up and down the country there are kids who'd happily donate their sprouts to you. Grin

ineedamoreadultieradult · 24/12/2015 06:34

Narp I don't think leftover staff are normally given away to be eaten, seems quite cruel Xmas Grin
