A courier delivered a parcel to my address when I was not at home. I have not given any details of 'leave with neighbour if not in, or 'safe place' or anything. He/she put note through door saying 'parcel left in meter box'. He unlocked my leccy meter box with his own key and put parcel in!! Bit miffed I am.

We found one behind the recycling boxes and because there was no note delivered we don't know how long it had been there. Annoyingly it was needed a few days ago and was probably there before that. A few have been left on the door step in full view on our busy main road, fortunately not stolen. I'm usually just thankful I don't need to make a trip to the sorting office or rearrange delivery.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/12/2015 18:38

I love my postie too - if I have a recorded - something stupid like a DVD or something (you can tell by the envelope) he puts it through the letterbox with a wee note telling me he's signed for it. :)

HairySubject · 22/12/2015 18:44

Sorry but I just don't get it either. I am impressed.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 22/12/2015 19:13

What on earth are you miffed about? That the delivery driver did his best to get your parcel to you? They are working flat out at the moment to get as many parcels delivered as possible. Would you have preferred him to have left it somewhere unsafe or taken it back to the depot?

bigfam · 22/12/2015 20:09

I showed my dad this thread, he's literally speechless at how many people are praising posties. He left with the biggest smile on his face, so thank you Xmas Smile

TheRadiantAerynSun · 22/12/2015 20:15

I would have been pleased; presumably the meter keys are universal (cant imagine the meter reader carting round hundreds of different keys.)

We used to live a few doors down from our Postie and he used to take our parcels home and bring them round in the evenings... he was awesome Xmas Grin I was gutted when he retired...gutted.

Wolfiefan · 22/12/2015 20:18

Bigfam im glad you are still here. Our postie recently tried to deliver a parcel. We were out. When I arrived home he actually noticed the car as he went back to his van. He returned to the van, got parcel and walked back down to give me my parcel. I couldn't thank him enough.
And then there's the lovely guy in the parcel depot if I need to go and pick up a parcel. Even this time of year he has a smile.
And the local post office. All smiles there too
Thanks to you all.

One of the couriers that would deliver to me does this regularly - sticks a wee note in to say its in the meter box - I find it really helpful. My postman is the best - he has called to deliver something, I havent answered the door and he's done the rest of the houses and nipped back because he has seen that the car is there and I mustn't have heard the bell/ had my hands full with one of the kids - he's a real star

bigfam · 22/12/2015 20:31

I'm glad I'm still here too, I'll be showing my dad the entire thread. He was so chuffed when he read how much people appreciate posties. You've made his Christmas and I don't mean it lightly Xmas Smile

CalleighDoodle · 22/12/2015 20:37

My dh used to work for a big well known courier company. He has just said a lot of the drivers had meter keys and would do this as the parcel is safe. He also said he had this exact complaint once when he worked in customer service. And the person was demanding to know how the driver had a key when he didnt. Dh told him they are standard and bought from hardware stores.

You have your parcel, despite not being in, and despite not having a 'leave here if not in' instruction. Some people like to have something to complain about.

My old, now retired, postie used to leave my packages in my garage if my bedroom curtains were closed without even knocking at all when i was pregnant / had my newborn, as he said he didnt want to wake me up! Lovely man.

ComposHatComesBack · 22/12/2015 20:39

Oh and our postie is pretty good too, just the useless bastard from Hermes who's the problem.

Yourarejokingme · 22/12/2015 20:50

Ours the other day there put in one of the vans outside. She knows us so I was well chuffed she did say she missed our old filing cabinet for putting things in. So I'd be chuffed to putting in the power cupboard

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 22/12/2015 20:51

I got a parcel of books left in the pouring rain yesterday.... When I was in. They are soaked and can't get replacements until after Christmas.

Goingtobeawesome · 22/12/2015 20:54

You are being rather precious, OP.

SapphireSeptember · 22/12/2015 21:01

YABU, one of our local Hermes men chucks things over the fence. Angry at least they (mostly) land in the bramble bush but the time I came home to find my parcel containing nail polishes on the concrete path I was NOT a happy bunny (luckily they were fine, but I know other people are not so lucky.) I prefer the RM, most of the stuff I have is small enough to go through the letter box, if it's not or signed for they take it to the sorting office and I can go and pick it up.

hefzi · 22/12/2015 21:07

I think you're NBU at all, OP: ring the company and complain that they haven't left it in your wheelie bin/on your rooftop/three streets away at a totally different number Hmm

kali110 · 22/12/2015 21:15

So fat I've had parcel shoved in my bin (then stolen), thrown over my gates so contents were destroyed, left under my wellcome mat Hmm so in full view of my street ( all couriers) and then at old oh's place i saw the postman just throw the parcels in the porch and leave! Didn't ring the bell or anything!!
Now i know why some of my items went missing.

NinjaClaws · 22/12/2015 21:34

My postie is fab and usually leaves things in the shed if we're not in. I don't bother locking it. I gave her her Xmas card and tin of chocs today. We always give our postie a card and pressie at Xmas as they're all so good and they keep an eye out for the old folk around here.
I live in a very rural area (Ireland) and the couriers sometimes struggle to find us so they often leave parcels at the local petrol station in the nearby town for collection (by agreement).
It's completely unofficial, but it works well. My friend left cash in an envelope just with a name on for a tradesman to collect from the petrol station. It was fine.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 22/12/2015 21:49

I had one left in my 'shed'.

I don't have a shed.

Turned out the bloke had managed to open the cupboard at the front of our house. It is locked on a Yale and used to store mostly junk - he must have used a credit card to fiddle the lock and put the parcel in!

chocomochi · 22/12/2015 22:18

Our postie is fab too - puts things in our bin shed and leaves a note, sometimes stops me on the street to give me parcels as I'm going home. Always so cheery too.

Gave him a box of chocs for Christmas and he was totally shocked. Don't think many people recognise what a great job they do.

SocksRock · 22/12/2015 22:22

Our postie is amazing. He usually leaves all the parcels in our woodshed and writes on one of the letters. I'm rubbish at remembering to lock the back door (we are pretty rural) and I've come home to my post on the kitchen table a couple of times! He's the dad of one of my DC's friends though, so he has been to ours socially as well. The local courier guys are usually the same person every time as rural, so they know the drill as well. In the woodshed or with the farm cottages across the road. I gave the postie £20 last Christmas, he saves me so much hassle and stress

wheelofapps · 23/12/2015 10:58

We currently have a FAB postie.
I treasure him, having had a bad one before.
I remember the one I had when I had my newborn ds who was unwell and I couldn't walk myself.
He used to open the storm door and then knock and call: 'Post and Prezzies'. Those were the days.

Plomino · 23/12/2015 11:10

So you order something online , are not in when it arrives , don't leave the courier any guidance what to do with the parcel whatsoever , then get the hump because he has the temerity to not only put it somewhere safe , but also leaves you a note to tell you where it is , instead of a treasure map with no clues on it , and you're miffed ? Really ? My DH works for Amazon at the moment , and it's thankless . Well other than the lady that insisted he take a fiver and a jar of humbugs because he went back to try and deliver her parcel for the second time as 8.30 last night in the pouring rain . They are apparently having a half day on Xmas eve . So he's expecting to finish at 6, and might be home at 7.

I came in from outside yesterday to find a parcel sitting in the middle of the hallway , and the postie making a fuss out of the greyhounds !

bushtailadventures · 23/12/2015 11:58

I read the horror stories about delivery drivers and think myself very lucky that all of ours are great touch wood. Our postman is wonderful, and I did actually give him a Christmas present this year because he never fails, even with the run up to Christmas and me ordering way too much from the internet.

PegsPigs · 23/12/2015 12:01

A rare unanimous YABU! OP what would you rather had happened? Your parcel was delivered safely and you found it. What other outcome would you have preferred?
