To ask you to turn me into a Star Wars fan!

My DH loves Star Wars. It wouldn't occur to me to ever, ever watch it, except for I would like to enjoy more of the stuff that my DH does.

If your favourite film is Annie and you have the attention span of a newt what would I get out of it?

I've just seen the new one, and I would say there's a great female lead character in this one - she's feisty, active, brave, can fly a plane and do mechanics!

I'm on a mission. 38 years of never watching any of them (much to DH's annoyance). I hope to make it to the grave without having seen a single one.

Yeah you have to watch it. I was sceptical, my first experience was of The Phantom Menace which was not a good place to start anyway, and I was barely paying attention because I was too busy snogging my boyfriend (we were 16,there was a lot of snogging).
My DH is a big fan and I watched the older films first with him which made a real difference, and now I'm a total convert. I don't do cinemas so can't wait to see The Force Awakens!

I've tried to watch them but fall asleep every time. They just don't hold my interest.

I watched them only when DC started to show interest. Before that i would just fall asleep -- just too boring. But i guess films like that are inevitable for general education.

Just don't take them too seriously. They are a medieval knight story set in space, with swords and magic. Start with the original episode IV, and remember it came out in the 80's and if nothing else, just appreciate how advanced the special effects were for the time.

Well, they're 'proper' film length, not 3 hour long arse-numbers padded out with tons of 'filler' dialogue and angsty token storylines. It probably helps to think of them as action/adventures that just happen to be set on another planet instead of something that's going to be some kind of sci-fi epiphany for you. The plots are easy to follow and are fast moving, so you don't have much time to mentally wander off. They're not really great works of cinema, but they are good pacey entertainment.

Become an Indiana Jones fan instead, much more fun.

Start with the old ones. Watch the original trilogy over a weekend. It's lots of fun! Then you can watch the new ones.

Don't watch the prequel trilogy unless you've been turned into a hardcore fan. I'm a huge star wars fan and find a lot of scenes completely cringe worthy.

Then go buy a costume, go to conventions, read the books etc... Wink

It's not true science fiction, more like a family-friendly adventure that happens to be set in space, with aliens and robots as some of the characters.

It has the same themes and ideas as much of the fiction you are used to:
Good vs evil
Separation from loved ones
The value of friendship and loyalty
Destiny vs free-will

If your favourite film is Annie, there are two orphans. A feisty girl with odd hair. There's humour and drama.
There's someone claiming to be a parent.
There's a world leader.
A benevolent tutor.

Only good things.

I agree with what others have posted, ignore Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. They are shite.

Start with Episode IV: A New Hope. The special effects are way ahead of their time (1977), but they add to the film mainly by not distracting you from the story (never could take Jaws seriously, the shark was so obviously not real) which is universal. Orphan boy whose past has been hidden from him is thrown into adventure when said past catches up with him. (Ooh, that could be King Arthur and the round table too, couldn't it?) A mix of drama, adventure,and humour.

I so wanted to be Princess Leia. At last, a heroine who didn't scream and fall over when running away from the monsters Grin.

I'm just out of the cinema after watching the new one, it's brilliant! The prequels are a lot of shite but the original trilogy is amazing and definitely worth a watch, even if only for Harrison Ford Xmas Wink
