To have a music video channel on during the daytime when babysitting a 3 & 1yo

Just that really, I know music videos aren't perfect but my sister was pretty pissed off when she came back and the three year old was dancing to Ariana grande. It wasn't a slutty video, but did have short skirts, suggestive looks I guess, pretty mild compared with what is out there. Wasn't a r and b type video or rianna, would of turned it off if it was.

Obviously I won't do it again as she didn't like it. But was I u to do it in the first place?

Slutty is an old nasty derogatory word for women. I wouldn't use it coz I'm not a misogynist.
I'd call your video and masses of the content of music videos 'sexualised'.
there are loads of parents who find it absolutely adorable that 3 yr old dd can twerk like Mily or 4 yr old Ds can't stop staring at Rhiannon but this doesn't mean it's a good idea.

The first recorded use of the word was in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. He says, "Why is thy lord so sluttish, I thee pray, And is of power better clothes to bey." He is referring to the man's untidy appearance.

Words change their meaning all the time and slut was reclaimed many years ago. Maybe some of you are behind the times.

I dressed like a slutty nurse for Halloween and it was just shit and giggles. There is nothing wrong with being slutty, but I did make the decision that it wasn't appropriate to have slutty imagery around young children .

Which video? I did say in my op I wouldn't watch a riannah video with young children, but it wouldn't be on in the daytime.

Yeah, I said was an old word.

So you are reclaiming the word slutty, I see, well done you.

Your title was aibu to have the music channel on with very small kids inc some song with lots of suggestive looks etc. I'm with your sister. Pretend all you like that it's really good for them and people need to move with the times. most parents would prefer their dc to be watching fireman Sam or peppa pig.

DyslexicScientist · 20/12/2015 13:57

I totally respect your and my sisters views on this. I did post this thread to help me understand.

Reclaiming slut was years ago, not started by me.

YANBU. Its not like you listen to the Butthole Surfers. Thats the sort of stuff my lad grew up listening to Grin

I know about reclaiming the word slut. I don't think it's 'reclaiming' it to say that 'this video is slutty' but hey.

Iggi999 · 20/12/2015 16:36

I don't care about your use of the word slut, but the use of "shits and giggles" would have you permanently barred from my house.

LovelyFriend · 20/12/2015 16:50

OP if you are so firmly fixed in your view that music video channels are so totally ok for young children and your sister should get over herself, WTF did you post here asking AIBU?

Your mind is too closed to any other POV to take anything on.

Little children are mimics. If the little ones watch sexy dancing they will learn to copy it pretty quick, and do it well. If you like them performing sexualised dancing, go ahead, show them videos to learn from.
Personally I think you are putting them in danger!

Xmasbaby11 · 24/05/2017 22:55

I wouldn't let them watch those music videos. They sound too adult and not appropriate. I have 3 yo and she is very influenced by TV and often copies and recites things she hears and sees. We mostly stick to cbeebies for that reason.

ZOMBIE THREAD. SmellyCoat were you searching posts about Ariana Grande in the light of recent events and decided to use this ancient post to voice your opinions about putting children in danger??? Angry

Leave well alone!

smellycoat · 25/05/2017 23:47

user1491572121 Zombies walking. That's what Zombies do.
And yes, I did wonder who this pop star was. What a horrible world we seem to have created. How can it be happening?

Without questioning, there can be no answers.

You tube is your friend here. Compilation tapes made by DJs and often track listings to check for lyrics. The graphics vary but you have more control over the visuals. Current favourite of mine 'ultimate old school reggae'

Or make a Spotify list of yours and the children's favourites. It's a shame to miss out on the music and dancing for the sake of a few sexist videos.

thethoughtfox · 26/05/2017 09:52

I would be pissed off too. Put the radio on rather than the tv so they aren't watching a screen and so they are not exposed to clothing, images and suggestive dance moves they are too innocent to realise they shouldn't copy.

MuddlingMackem · 26/05/2017 10:15

I used to stick my DS in front of VH-1 when he was a baby, stuff like like Keane, Maroon 5 and Franz Ferdinand at the time, still have fond memories connected with those songs.

However, if you're looking for songs with choreography which will get the kids moving, you'd be better off acquiring a batch of Wiggles DVDs. They're ace, and a good variety of songs. Fruit salad anyone? Grin

(But go for the original line-up, not sure about the new lot!)
