To think someone should have picked up on this terrible misspelling?

I'm parked outside a second hand shop right now called 'Needfull things'. Argh! Why did nobody pick up on it? Surely the printers should have noticed?

It's really annoying me!

There are a couple of shops near me with names that annoy the hell out of me every time I drive past.

One is "Fleur Maison" which offends my sense of o-level Frenchness as it ought to be "Maison Fleur" or "Maison de Fleur" or something.

The other is "Nouveau Regard" which presumably is supposed to mean "new look" but actually means "new looking" Hmm

MiniLop · 17/12/2015 17:57

Bollocks on both counts.

Nope. I'm not the only one who had to read back to see what you were referring to.

BoSelectaBigBiff · 17/12/2015 19:14

There's a hairdresser near me called kut's 4 kid's. I suppose I should be thankful it's not kut's 4 kid'z, though.

And my train station, until relatively recently, had several car park spaces that were marked as being "RESEVERED" for staff.

But the worst thing I've come across recently was hearing that a teacher at DC's primary school once wrote "well done, you have wrote a good story" in someone's homework book.

catfordbetty · 18/12/2015 08:24

I'm not the only one who had to read back to see what you were referring to

The post I was referring to was directly above it. No reading back required. So, yes, bollocks, I'm afraid.

Apostrophes: the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit. I despise misplaced apostrophes, they make my teeth itch.

As for Needfull Things, I am perplexed that anyone would name a shop after a horror novel! I wonder what their custom is like...

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/12/2015 08:39

Bo: that would have been grammatically correct in Norfolk, where the strong verbs are still in use.

BabsUnited · 18/12/2015 08:47

Good grammar is the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit

Drquin · 18/12/2015 09:07

Buddy the flippin' elf declared "because you was a good girl look in my box" to a friend's child yesterday. Presumably it is Buddy I need to discuss this with, not the friend?

mackinnonka · 18/12/2015 09:17

There is a café near my station that I walk past every day and the chalkboard outside advertises 'Freashly squeezed juice' and 'Lazagna' as menu options....I always have to resist licking my finger and rubbing them off!

ceebie · 18/12/2015 09:38

DD's nursery folder had notes throughout saying "MiniCeebie sore a toy / MiniCeebie sore her friend etc". And many other spelling disasters. My DS apparently wants a "crain" for Christmas. I desperately prayed that the primary school teachers would have a better grasp of spelling, let alone grammar!

There is a clinic for chiropody and complimentary medicine on my way to work.

I always picture their treatments as a man sitting behind a desk saying "oooh don't you look LOVELY today" and "that dress does suit you".

MiniLop · 18/12/2015 10:14

Just remembered another one - went for a pub lunch with all the family a couple of weeks ago, at the bottom of the menu it said '10% serive charge added to tables of 8 or more' Shock

InMySpareTime · 18/12/2015 10:38

I saw this in my local library.
Standards are slipping, I should be safe from this sort of thing in a library!

My mum worked at a bookshop as a volunteer and nearly strangled the sign writer for writing 'vidoes' instead of 'videos' on the sign.

He explained to her that he had spelt it that way on a sign up the road, and thought they would want the same!

agapimou · 18/12/2015 11:09

I live in Greece and see some truly amazing English grammar fails.

The best was on a payphone:

Once dialing, press the star bottom.

They here you, but you cannot here them.

Angry

Although, I am a writer and regularly get pulled up by the editors for commas, especially that/which restricting and non-restricting clauses. They are bloody confusing.

ShortandSweeter · 18/12/2015 11:21

I find it hilarious that trivial stuff likes this winds folks up.

iklboo · 18/12/2015 14:03

I do love takeaway menus - one where we used to live serves curry with boiled mice Wink

JessieMcJessie · 18/12/2015 14:36

I'm not sure that "needful", even when spelled correctly, is a word in general use in British English. What is it supposed to mean - useful things, handy things, things we all need? It gives me a vision of something more like "needy" i.e. Stuff crying out for a living home, like needy children.

It is however extremely common in Indian English- colleagues in India often phrase requests as "Please do the needful."

BarbaraofSeville · 18/12/2015 15:00

I think mistakes are forgivable when translated from foreign languages in an attempt to be helpful. After all most of us would be fucked on foreign holidays if they didn't provide an English translation.

However I don't think basic spelling, punctuation and grammar errors are trivial especially from big companies who always rattle on about image, branding and values and can afford to pay professional proof readers.

SquirrelledAway · 18/12/2015 16:06

We have an aleternative exit at work!

Do you work in a pub?

Lizsmum · 18/12/2015 16:07

I had to argue with the local authority HR department when recruiting support staff at school because I insisted on assessing their written English. The clever people at HR really couldn't see that it mattered if the applicant had no understanding of spelling or grammar as they were 'only working with infant children'.
