I'm parked outside a second hand shop right now called 'Needfull things'. Argh! Why did nobody pick up on it? Surely the printers should have noticed?

It's really annoying me!

'Reindeers' is an acceptable pluralisation:

It may be 'acceptable' but it's rarely if ever used, and IMO that use makes that company look rather silly

FanjoFandango · 16/12/2015 18:14

I blame 'Frozen' for the Reindeers thing. That song, 'Reindeers are better than people', grrrrr, it's bloody reindeer, not reindeers.

Has anyone heard the radio ad (heard it loads on Radio X), about not drinking for Cancer Research in January. It annoys the hell out of me because he sings 'i'm not drinking nothing', ahhh so you are drinking then!?..................

skulks off to pedants corner

SalemSaberhagen · 16/12/2015 20:12

Why the random 'it's' catford?

Thanks sowhite, not many people remember it!

And to show the hideousness of the sign, here it is in all of its glory....

The bottom of my favourite mug mentions viewing 1000 years of Londons history

Sad

Favourite mug...

nortonhouse · 16/12/2015 20:49

I am really pleased to discover so many other people (on this thread) who actually care about these things. The apostrophe-s for simple pluralisation seems to be everywhere these days, and frankly I find that a little bit depressing....

itsatrap · 16/12/2015 20:50

Anyone want to explain basic apostrophe law to me?

RiverTam · 16/12/2015 20:55

Apostrophe s can either imply possession (Katie's bag) or be short for 'is/has' (Katie's bought a new bag). You don't use them for plurals at all. The tricky one it it's and its - it's is short for it is (it's raining), its is for possession (the dog has lost its bone).

Obladioblada · 16/12/2015 21:09

Delurking for this as I haven't posted in many months but this is by far my favourite! Grocer, grocerer, grocerest?!?

Obladioblada · 16/12/2015 21:13

And the funniest thing about my local shop (see previous post) is that an apostrophe mistakenly used to indicate plural is known as a "grocer's apostrophe" Grin

It's also used to denote a shortening of words, eg "should've".

RiverTam · 16/12/2015 21:17

Not should of Grin.

PitBlackwell · 16/12/2015 21:24

My local newsagent used to advertise that they sold coffee's, tea's and new'spaper's.

It hurt my heart to see it.

Mmmmcake123 · 16/12/2015 21:37

There is a garage in the next town from me that has tyers, spark plug's, MOT's, repleacement bulbs and oil change written underneath the main sign.

spiderlight · 16/12/2015 21:37

Our local bakery has a big professional sign proclaiming that it's called Burtons the Bakery's. It drives me nuts every time I see it. We also have a shop nearby called Rug's and Carpets - obviously hedging their bets with the apostrophes there!

ladygracie · 16/12/2015 21:49

Dinosnores - I drive past that shop several times a week. Not only can the owner not use grammar but I've never seen it open. Never & it's been there for years!!!

DrDreReturns · 16/12/2015 21:51

A hairdressers in Worcester has a sign saying 'Proffessional hair cuts..' outside. I walk past it every day and it annoys me.

FuckOffJeffrey · 16/12/2015 21:54
