Christmas tree lights: white or multi-coloured?

Which ones look best on a tree?

Before anyone asks I've posted this in AIBU because I want a fierce and vigorous debate to help me make my mind up Xmas Grin

My pre kids tree used to be real, warm white lights, navy blue and copper baubles, silver ribbon artfully gracing it. Or one year shiny and dull purple baubles and the odd silver one. So tasteful.......

Now.......multicoloured tat a go go with mc lights. Sigh.....tasteful Xmas gone forever along with my pelvic floor.

honeylulu · 16/12/2015 19:48

Warm white is classy. I especially love the twinkly ones. Though they stopped working this year and i panic bought replacements which turned out to be winter white and don't twinkle. I don't like them half as much.

bluechameleon · 16/12/2015 20:00

I think warm white lights and coordinated decorations look classy but my tree has a mixture of static and flashing coloured lights with a random assortment of decorations and I love it.

JapaneseSlipper · 16/12/2015 20:37

We have a long set of white LEDs that were sold as "warm white" but are actually cold and horrid. They go into the tree right around the base, top to bottom. The lovely old-style-warm-white-proper-bulbs go around the outside of the tree. Works ok. There are about 300 lights on our tree but it's still not enough.

Also - blue lights are not classy, or an acceptable alternative to white. I'd rather have multicoloured. I don't understand why blue are a "thing" or considered Christmassy. Awful.

Senpai · 16/12/2015 20:38

Depends on the tree and the decorations you're using. We have a white tree, so we use white lights because multicolored don't come on white strings without being expensive.

But for green trees, I'd say multicolored if you have kids and are letting them decorate. White is you want a "sophisticated" look.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 16/12/2015 21:19

I would never want a sophisticated look, kids or no kids we have always done multicoloured on green.

Cotto · 16/12/2015 21:27

Blue- hideous ,utterly grim and not Christmassy.
Multicoloured - poor you,you hve no taste.
Warm white, pretty and sparkling -lovely.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 16/12/2015 22:31

I don't have white for class, as I'm severely lacking in that. I have white because it doesn't hurt as much. My eyes are bastards:o

rainbowstardrops · 16/12/2015 22:51

I have warm white lights on my tree together with my red and gold baubles.
Dd decorates their tree (ds can't be arsed) in multicoloured lights and blues, pinks and purples and 'her' tree looks gorgeous!
I might go multicoloured next year Grin

lovemyway · 16/12/2015 22:57

I always have white but grew up in the 70s with a white tree and always multicoloured lights. In the last couple of years I've started to feel nostalgic about them and could see a return in the future. Fashions always come in cycles.

lovemyway · 16/12/2015 22:59

I really dislike blue because they look cold. I suppose that's the desired effect but I want cosy.

weeblueberry · 16/12/2015 23:17

For years I belonged to the 'use white - they're classier' group but the last couple I've thought fuck it. I prefer coloured lights and they just make me happier than white ones.

weeblueberry · 16/12/2015 23:19

Depends on the tree and the decorations you're using. We have a white tree, so we use white lights because multicolored don't come on white strings without being expensive.

Not sure how big your tree is but we got 180 coloured lights with a 'clear' white string for £20 Xmas Smile

weeblueberry · 16/12/2015 23:19

Would help if I said from B&Q Xmas Blush

abigamarone · 16/12/2015 23:35

White lights on the tree, multi coloured elsewhere (currently draped over the living room mirror)

WotNoLoobrush · 16/12/2015 23:45

Our fake tree is up with berry lights and warm white (twinkling) LED lights. It's nice to choose one or the other, or both. I like the look of berry lights on their own during the day when the sun used to shine on the tree. All the decorations are silver, including tinsel (what's wrong with tinsel?).

The real tree is going up at the weekend with static warm white (non-LED) lights - complete with shades.

I've still got an old pack of Woolies 80s style MC lights that haven't been used for years but they might come back into use next year. I don't care if it's old fashioned Smile

FankEweVeryMuch · 16/12/2015 23:49

Warm white for me.

I like old fashioned multi coloured but the new LED ones only have green/ blue/ red/ yellow and I want all the other sparkly colours too so sticking to plain old white again.

WotNoLoobrush · 16/12/2015 23:52

Also meant to say that I'm another person who doesn't get the blue light fashion. Each to their own indoors, but I find driving past strings of bright blue lights distracting, because of the colour's association with the emergency services. I hope they go out of fashion soon.

daisyswirl · 17/12/2015 07:35

Mine are purple (which flash yay) with white siver and purple decs. I alternate year about with blue ones and blue and silver decs (plus baubles from local beloved football team which ds1 insisted on!) I dont care what anyone says i luvs it..but must admit have fond memories of the multi ones we had when i was a child. Didnt like unravelling or trying to find the bloody light that wasnt working though!!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/12/2015 07:42

There seem to be more blue lights round here than ever this year, I'd say that's not a fashion that's going away soon.

jusdepamplemousse · 17/12/2015 07:57

I like both. This year have warm white on the tree and multicoloured up round the kitchen. White are obviously a bit more refined but multicoloured are fun.

Blue lights need to be banned. They are awful. They are for police cars and ambulances. They are not for celebrating Christmas. They are not ok.

Shodan · 17/12/2015 08:27

Rainbow vomit on the sitting room tree.

'Tasteful' white snowflake lights and colour-changing lights on the silver tree on the landing (multi-coloured decorations)

And usually warm white on the real tree in the conservatory, which I try to make properly tasteful with the use of white, silver and ice-blue decorations, but which I am always thwarted in by Dh and the dc hurling tinsel and lametta at it. So this year we're trying out twinkly LED lights, which are normally banned because they're not right, but what the heck...

(I feel I should explain that we have three tress because there's not enough room for a decent real tree in the sitting room but I still WANT ONE, hence the conservatory tree. And the silver tinsel tree-well, who wouldn't, eh? Grin Grin)

Dameshazaba · 17/12/2015 10:19

Can anyone recommend where to buy lovely warm white lights for the tree?! I'm bamboozled by amazon options and don't know what to choose.

Klaptrap · 17/12/2015 11:16

Always multi-coloured and they must be the old fashioned incandescent type, preferably with a plastic 'star' around the bulb to make them even more twinkly!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/12/2015 11:18

I have both. A traditional white set, and an all-changing multicoloured set with various settings. That way I can see how I feel day by day, and have either one or the other, or both on.
Best of all worlds! Xmas Grin
