And the Happy Holidays in the the States is largely a catch-all expression covering Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hannukah. Nothing about offending anyone.

This is true and also what canyou said. For example, I live in an area where there is a large Jewish population so Happy Holidays tends to be the default greeting to be inclusive of everyone's religion.

We have no rules at work about what you can or cannot say, but all official communications use "Holidays." We have Christmas and Hannukah decorations up at work.

Kaytee1987 · 15/12/2015 16:06

Stiles I blame the baby brain Blush used to think it was a myth.

Gottagetmoving · 15/12/2015 16:07

The Muslim shopkeepers in a shop I go to are very happy about all the Christmas fuss because they sell lots of Christmas items. They always wear Christmas hats and join in the celebrations.
They would hate it if Christmas disappeared.

Greydog · 15/12/2015 16:11

Our local Christmas fair was organised by a Muslim!

whatdoIget · 15/12/2015 16:12

My Muslim neighbours who always send a Christmas card must have missed the memo about them being offended Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2015 16:18

It's the militant aethistis , innit No. Militant atheist here. Love Christmas, say 'Merry Christmas'. It's the well-meaning plonkers.

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2015 16:20

"It's the militant aethistis , innit No. Militant atheist here. Love Christmas, say 'Merry Christmas'. It's the well-meaning plonkers."

It isn't either the militant atheists or the well meaning plonkers. It's the malicious shit stirrers

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2015 16:26

The shit on FB is the malicious shit stirrers. The bullshit at people's work places and saying, 'happy holidays' is well meaning plonkers. Poeple ask me if I'm OK with Merry Christmas (atheist) as I bang back Baileys while watching Love Actually and farting tinsel.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 15/12/2015 16:31

A mate of mine thought the holiday armadillo from friends was an actual part of the Jewish celebration. She wished someone happy Christmas, was told they are Jewish then started banging on about the holiday armadillo.

Totally off topic but I thought it was funny.

fakenamefornow · 15/12/2015 16:40

I remember a few years ago I heard somebody on radio 4, I think he was from the Muslim council of Britain talking about this. He was saying- will you stop with the mustn't mention Christmas nonsense, nobody is offended by Christmas celebrations and it just gives us a bad name.

To all the people saying it does happen, our council/company does this. Who in the organisation decided Christmas was offensive? I'll bet money it wasn't a non Christian.

TheoriginalLEM · 15/12/2015 16:56

lol - i have seen this too! idiots.

My mum's ndn has their christmas lights up - and yep, you've guessed it. They are muslim Grin

Kr1stina · 15/12/2015 16:59

I do think it's the militant aetheists , the ones who want to compel everyone to beileve what they believe . Who complain that the guys at the next desk wearing Santa hats are infringing their civil liberties .

Meanwhile all the normal aetheists , agnostics and humanists smile and say " it's just a bit of fun " . And the Christians and Muslims feel got at when all they wanted to do was Celebrate their way .

No actually you are right. It's the shit stirrers, who want to cause trouble under the guise of " tolerance "

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2015 17:03

"I do think it's the militant aetheists , the ones who want to compel everyone to beileve what they believe . Who complain that the guys at the next desk wearing Santa hats are infringing their civil liberties"

Grin Please tell me somebody actually did this. It would be really, really funny!

AskingForAPal · 15/12/2015 17:04

"People ask me if I'm OK with Merry Christmas (atheist) as I bang back Baileys while watching Love Actually and farting tinsel."

Hahaha, wonderful image.

Olddear · 15/12/2015 17:09

My elderly Muslim neighbour came round with a Christmas card and chocs for me today! We exchange cards at Eid too. They have family over on Christmas Day and have a celebration on the day same as me!

HelpfulChap · 15/12/2015 17:12

My favourite Curry house is fully bedecked with lights tinsel and decorations. They are even doing a full turkey dinner on Christmas day with the option of 'bisto or curry sauce'.
I'm sorely tempted to book.

batshitlady · 15/12/2015 18:26

I heard some loud mouthed, ignorant, bigoted cow moaning outside my DD's school last week, saying (in between sucks on her fag) something like "Our kids have to celebrate Fuckin Eide but they won't fuckin well do Christmas, blah blah"

A week later, yesterday in fact, and all Muslim kids without a single exception, (I work their PT) were singing carols, making decorations, and swapping cards with all the rest.

SenecaFalls · 15/12/2015 19:11

Normally, around this time of year here in the US, you hear about Fox News and their ilk blathering on about the "war on Christmas." I haven't heard much of that nonsense this year. Perhaps it's because we have enough real issues to concern ourselves with this year, like terrorism and the presidential election.

claig · 15/12/2015 19:27

SenecaFalls, you haven't been watching Fox closely enough. Have you missed the Santa ban in the Brooklyn school? I never usually watch Fox, only doing so for Trump coverage, but the "war on Christmas" coverage is in full swing.

claig · 15/12/2015 19:33

In fact it has got so hot that today's New York Post is reporting that Sanity has been restored

"Sanity — and Santa — have been restored at a Brooklyn public elementary school where St. Nick was banned, the Pledge of Allegiance was dropped and Thanksgiving was replaced with a “harvest festival.”

The good news arrived at PS 169 in Sunset Park on Monday morning, a day after The Post exposed the bizarre PC extremism of Principal Eujin Jaela Kim."

Puffpastry1 · 15/12/2015 19:35

The serially offended are Grin

Tell them to stuff off and get over themselves.

Everyone is entitled to celebrate things in their own way.

The only people at our school who totally avoid Christmas are the Jehovah's witness families.

Their kids had to miss the end of term party because it includes the word Christmas in the name Sad

amarmai · 15/12/2015 19:45

Been teaching in canada for my last two decades and the schools here do NOT celebrate christian holidays unless they cover ALL of the religious hols.
