I am determined to give up smoking in the new year and want to try vaping. I am looking online but it is quite confusing (probably just me being dim). Any vapers out there who can recommend a product? How much does it cost? How successful have you been?

Vape shops are popping up all over and are generally more than happy to advise so I would recommend going and having a chat, they will point you in the right direction for a decent starter set up. I started with a basic Pro tank and Ego battery and quit 20 fags a day straight away, some people find a combination of smoking and vaping works better to start with and gradually reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke. I've been stinky free for 2 years 9 months now and am down to the lowest nicotine juice, have never looked back and know I will never smoke again. Only downside is I have put on a lot of weight, not eating any more than I ever have so can only assume it's because smoking speeds up your metabolism where vaping doesn't. Reducing portion sizes a bit from the outset and maybe increasing activity in line with the improvement in my lung function would probably have avoided this with the benefit of hindsight so that's something to be aware of. I had tried pretty much everything else to quit in the past though with zero success so vaping has been brilliant for me, I feel much healthier and despite the extra weight my breathing and lung capacity is vastly improved and I no longer stink, hate the smell of fags now! I've done terribly with it but I think my mind hasn't been in the right place to actually give up yet so I'm going to try again at some point.

I've read a few threads over on the Stop Smoking topic, there's a lot of good advice on starting out over there.

Because most people socialise a lot over christmas and it can be very hard to maintain willpower when mixing with smokers, especially if you've been drinking.

Also, if OP is going to try vaping, it can take a while to find the right kit and liquid and learn how it all works.

And any NHS Stop advisor will tell you to set a date a week or so ahead and to really think about/keep a diary for every cigarette you smoke between now and then. When, where, why, did you like it?

Then you can see which will be the ones you really have to work at giving up - which may only be 1 or 2 a day.

If you are planning on quitting it is best to plan well, rather than just stop one day without giving it any thought at all.

If you are going to quit, quit don't vape.
My dh saw his asthma clinic nurse on Friday. They have been trying to encourage him to quit for years. He went in proud as punch and was able to say I have quit. When he then said he vapes instead the nurse literally banged her head. Apparently it's no better really.

Fairy, vaping is loads better than smoking. His asthma nurse needs to update her knowledge. This is the current NHS advice on vaping.

I don't know why. I have noticed his health improving and so has he. Even the nurse said he looked better so I don't know why she considers it just as bad. Luckily he hasn't gone back to smoking. I did ask him to make sure he wasn't considering it. He has decided to quit vaping in the new year and there fore be totally smoke free though.

Well, she is wrong. Most PNs would be overjoyed if their smokers switched to vaping. There is so much evidence being collected in GP surgeries across Europe, noting the positive changes in all of the main health indices in people who stop smoking and start vaping.

I know, I have worked in a Support to Stop centre for about 11 years. Vaping has made an enormous, positive change for the vast majority of people.

There are some for whom vaping needs to be discussed, including anyone with any pulmonary issues. But as they will be smoking anyway, it becomes a moot point.

I just asked him and he said something about the poisons in the liquid and how the manufacturer doesn't have to mark all ingredients in the liquid but I've got a feeling that is the counterfeit ones she's on about

The advice has only changed in the last few months and it's probably taking a while to filter through to all NHS services. I'm a bit concerned that an asthma clinic isn't more on the ball though.

She is wrong Fairy! As long as ge buts his liquids from a reputable source and not a bloke with a trolley outside superdrug it is considered (I think) 95% safer than smoking.

Op I quit over 2 years ago as I was pg and then bfing. Was pretty miserable without.my fags. Then I started again last Christmas. Felt bloody shocking and I have asthma too. Was using more inhaler just to be 50% normal.

Stopped again using vaping and am like a new woman. Chest much better, everything tastes and smells nicer and can still 'smoke'. I am actually glad most places have banned vaping inside as I can still go outside and chat to other smokers/vapers which I missed.

Go in a vape shop to try different set ups. I have had a few but have the iStick mini with a aspire minI nautilus tank I think it is and use a caramel liquid. Dp prefers the tobacco flavours though.

It saves us a fucking fortune and we are both much healthier for it and don't really miss smoking. In fact I can't stand the smell anymore.

Sorry OP didn't answer your question . I now use a curve vapour . It's brilliant . You can adjust the strength and amount of smoke you get and use it when it's recharging , win , win !!!

Thanks for all replies. I'm sure vaping is better for you than smoking! I am going to get advice from a shop ASAP. I have said for years I wished there was a cigarette which was cheaper, didn't stink and didn't kill you. Surely this is it? May be slightly controversial but I am sure there are people out there who really want giving up to be Hell as a punishment for starting in the first place!
