Should I get the morning after pill?

Last night I got very, very merry and had unprotected sex with an ex 'friend with benefits'.

Should I risk it or go and get the pill? I still feel tipsy so I'm not thinking straight!

Fair enough, Hacker, though the example given is one where the OP knows she was unprotected.

I mentioned private as a response to someone talking about NHS waiting times.

I accept that an abortion is more unpleasant but there is a 70%+ chance that no procedure at all would actually be necessary.

I understand why you would take a different decision but that's your body, your choice. As the only person with a lowish chance of suffering from my decision is me, I don't think it's blasé or cavalier.

Spilose · 13/12/2015 16:38

Abortions can take weeks to set up depending on where you are, some areas have waiting lists of up to 6 weeks (local to me) and can cost the NHS of up to £1000 for a "straight forward" termination. It requires doctors visits, at best uncomfortable procedures, at worst extremely painful, potential hospital stays, risk of infections and other health complications, recovery time and not to mention the emotional upheaval. So yes, I think it's is "fucking ridiculous" to take such risks and be so irresponsible.

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 16:40

Even if I'm going private, Spilose?

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 16:44

And even though the chances are against pregnancy so it's pretty likely none of the things you cite would actually happen?

Spilose · 13/12/2015 16:46

A lot of those still apply when going private, of course

Jesus is the post about opting for an abortion instead of the MAP actually serious?! I have a 1 year old dd already and know how silly I was. I don't even know why I asked on here but I've taken the pill so I'm all sorted. Will be more careful in future.

OP - not "opting for an abortion"; opting to run the sub-30% risk of needing an early abortion, yes.

But since you asked on here in the first place whether you should get the MAP, surely you were doing some mental weighing up of risks yourself?

Glad you are happy with your decision and got sorted quickly though Flowers

TurquoiseDress · 13/12/2015 17:14

In a word id say YES!

Unless you would consider becoming a mother?

You have 72 hours (3 days) to get the standard morning after pill Levonelle, bear in mind it doesn't always work.

EllaOne you can take up to 120 hours (5 days) after sex

Your choice OP

It strikes me that getting the MAP is so easy now, that why on earth wouldn't you? I've taken it twice - first time I was around 19 and living at home, so had to plan quite carefully to obtain it from a family planning clinic. Next time I was in my 30s (burst condom) but still had to go to my GP who was totally lovely about it and saw me early in the morning to give me the prescription. Now you can just stroll into a pharmacy! We take this for granted and we really should be more grateful. Neither time did I notice any kind of side effect from taking the pill, even though I was expecting to. If this happened to me now I would certainly go for the MAP, even though the chances of me getting pregnant now I'm over 50 are pretty close to zero.

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 17:52

jamesdean glad you got the MAP. Hope you had a good night! Wink

OddSocksHighHeels · 13/12/2015 17:55

Do remember the STI test at some point as well. Not meant to sound like a lecture btw Grin

I'm glad you got it all sorted.

jamesdeandaydream · 13/12/2015 19:19

Will definitely get an STI check too. Thank you all for responding to a very dumb question. I need to drink less vodka next time Grin

jamesdeandaydream · 13/12/2015 19:36
