Should I get the morning after pill?

Last night I got very, very merry and had unprotected sex with an ex 'friend with benefits'.

Should I risk it or go and get the pill? I still feel tipsy so I'm not thinking straight!

Posting here for traffic Xmas Smile

If you're posting on MN asking whether or not to get the MAP then I don't think you're in a position to have a baby. Get and STI at some point during the week too. Glad your going to the chemist.

CarbonEmittingPenguin · 13/12/2015 13:04
  • an STI check
hefzi · 13/12/2015 13:30

All the people saying STI check now - just be aware that being clear this week will not show you don't have any STI's: some of them have a period before they register, which is why the clinic asks for dates etc

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 13:38

Um, going against the grain here, but I might well not. However, I'd be happy to have an abortion at 5-6 weeks instead.

But that's about my judgement of the relative risks of pregnancy as a result of one instance of unprotected sex.

Do have an STI check though, and another in 3 months.

Brummiegirl15 · 13/12/2015 13:40

Sounds like a great night - but if you don't want a baby - take the MAP.

I'm 33 wks pregnant with a planned baby and I'm bloody terrified! So if babies aren't on the agenda then chemist pronto.

And yes these things happen and we get carried away, but condoms are the easier option

AliceInUnderpants · 13/12/2015 13:40

So one if you knew you wouldn't want to go ahead with a pregnancy, rather than prevent it in the first place (by way of MAP), you'd take the risk then be happy to abort it if it progressed?

Abortion isn't birth control!

OP, unless the pair of you have discussed your plans for children, go get the MAP. Make sure to read the instructions first.

HackerFucker22 · 13/12/2015 13:48

To the poster that would "be happy to have an abortion at 5-6 weeks" urm are you fucking kidding me?

What a stupid, ignorant and uneducated thing to say. I cannot believe that someone would be cheap and lazy enough to not get the MAP.

Going to Boots and getting the MAP is so simple and convenient compared to having to undergo a medical abortion. Comparing the two is fucking madness.

OddSocksHighHeels · 13/12/2015 13:54

I've taken the MAP before, I've also terminated - the MAP is miles preferable to terminating.

Go and get the pill. Don't bother with an STI test yet, if you did catch anything then it's unlikely to show up yet but do get one soon (and continue to get them regularly if you're sexually active).

abbsismyhero · 13/12/2015 13:54

you're right you're still pissed and not thinking clearly take the map and sober up!

Brew
CarbonEmittingPenguin · 13/12/2015 14:05

OneMoreCasualty What an astonishingly ridiculous thing to say, not because I'm against abortion but it isn't a walk in the park. Compared to popping to the chemist and just buying one pill, you'd favour abortion? The mind truly boggles.

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:17

Obviously if you were guaranteed to be pregnant from a one night stand, i would take the MAP. IMO, there's a low enough risk of that to proceed and see if you are pregnant before making a decision.

That's what i would do; others can take their own decisions and I understand and respect those.

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 14:23

OneMore or you could just take the MAP if you've had unprotected sex so you don't need to abort if you do get pregnant. Why wouldn't you?

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:24

I've explained why I wouldn't.

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 14:27

You'd rather wait to see if you were pregnant than try and stop the pregnancy from happening?!

Wagglebees · 13/12/2015 14:28

But the MAP has pretty much zero risk to the patients health. Why on earth would you risk having to have an abortion at a later date rather than pop to speak to a pharmacist for five minutes and swallow a pill? Confused

RudeElf · 13/12/2015 14:30

Today 11:59 Supermanspants

You really need to ask

^this!

Should I risk it or go and get the pill?

Nah, risk it. Its not a big risk. Not a matter of life and death or anything Hmm

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:32

Random google says:

"The time of highest risk for unprotected sex is one or two days before ovulation when there is a 30% chance of becoming pregnant."

So much less than 50% chance at even the most fertile time and lower if near beginning/end of cycle. In addition, the MAP is not 100%.

Again, this would be my personal choice and as a baby doesn't result either way, not sure why it's viewed as irresponsible.

Wagglebees · 13/12/2015 14:33

Should say my previous post was to One but I suppose it applies to the OP too. Although the answer there might be because she's still pissed.

OddSocksHighHeels · 13/12/2015 14:37

I know that it isn't 100% - my termination was after the MAP failed. I just can't see anything negative in taking a pill whereas a termination carries greater risks, has a recovery period and results in you needing time off work and arranging childcare and stuff for appointments and the procedure itself.

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:40

Because I prefer not to take medical treatment that has a less than 30% chance of being necessary and as a quid pro quo, I would be prepared to have a more unpleasant medical treatment if and when it proved to be necessary.

Sorry the MAP didn't work for you.

whois · 13/12/2015 14:40

Um, going against the grain here, but I might well not. However, I'd be happy to have an abortion at 5-6 weeks instead.

Wow. Just.... Wow.

I am so surprised that someone would risk a pg because they are essentially too fucking lazy to nip down to boots and get the MAP because that 'can just have an abortion instead'. Fuck me. I'm very pro choice, but abortion should not be used as the first line of birth control. FFS.

Wagglebees · 13/12/2015 14:45

^this.

An abortion has health risks for the woman undergoing it in a way the map does not.

I'm fully pro choice and anyone who finds themselves in the position of deciding whether to continue a pregnancy or not, should absolutely be able to choose to terminate with no scaremongering or guilt trips whatsoever.

But the fact remains it is an operation and all operations carry some risks. Risks you could avoid if you're aware that an unwanted pregnancy could occur no matter how low the chance and have the ability to eliminate that chance.

It's a no brainer.

Wagglebees · 13/12/2015 14:46

My ^this was to Oddsocks post btw. Meant to put it.

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:46

It's not because I'm too lazy (rude post, thanks), it's because I've run a risk assessment in my head and that's the outcome.

Others view the risks differently and that's fine. But since the only risk I'm taking is to myself between two medical decisions (unlike choosing not to vaccinate or something), not sure why it's bothering others so much. You do realise the most likely outcome of my choice would be no abortion as no pregnancy, right?

OneMoreCasualty · 13/12/2015 14:48

Waggle, at 5-6 weeks it would be a medical abortion, not an operation.
