I think he's seen the Paris shooting as a chance to grab the limelight and feed his bloody messiah complex.

OP posts:

Sorry about the missing words above!

CremeEggThief · 08/12/2015 20:16

YABU. I don't like Bono, but I think it was a good thing to let TEODM perform with them. I prefer to look for the good and think the best of people, rather than the worst.

BrianCoxReborn · 08/12/2015 20:20

Erm....Bono has spoken of the Troubles, a lot. He has done a shit load of work for WarChild (Bosnia/Serb war era)

He is an opinionated twat and he does get on people's nerves, but he could just lounge around on his millions and do fuck all. Yet he doesn't, he puts a lot into charities, some big and some small.

BrianCoxReborn · 08/12/2015 20:22

And one of U2's biggest hits is Sunday Bloody Sunday....

tilliebob · 08/12/2015 20:22

Ooh I went to press like when I saw the title of this thread wrong bloody site, I knowGrin

Sallystyle · 08/12/2015 20:23

There is a song called The troubles on their new album.

OP, don't think you know much about him really do you? You have formed an opinion based on no facts at all. Just makes you look a bit silly.

Sallystyle · 08/12/2015 20:24

He also mentioned Ireland when I went to see them last month.

And yes, played Sunday Bloody Sunday.

HooseRice · 08/12/2015 20:30

I wonder if TEODM looked terrified due to PTSD?

They are releasing Save a Prayer with all theirs, Duran Duran and sony's profits going to a charity to promote tolerance.

Bono will never be my favourite person understatement but I think in this case U2 have done a good thing.

OTheHugeManatee · 08/12/2015 20:39

YANBU.

Alan Finlayson wrote a great article that describes 'Bonoism' as a special, ego-driven form of altruism unique to our age. It captures what you're grumbling about perfectly.

EddieStobbart · 08/12/2015 20:46

I don't like the tax business. I like some of their music but I used to hold them in high regard because of their ethical standards. I don't agree with how they've structured their tax affairs and judge them more harshly for it than I would others because I had viewed them as "better".

It's the only music DH has on his phone, he doesn't want it - he ain't happy...

Potatoface2 · 08/12/2015 20:53

'hey lets save the planet....all you nobodys stop going on holiday once a year...think of the carbon footprint....all that wasted energy, lets feed the starving millions in africa, give all your money to saving them.....excuse me while i fly by private jet to the next country i have to preach to....its all go go go.....i never get a home cooked meal, i have to make do with champagne and fillet steak on my never ending flight around the planet in my quest to save it'.....do you mean THAT bono?

aquashiv · 08/12/2015 20:56

Good for him. I think there are far bigger egos out there. I love the fact that he is a pretty rubbish singer in one of the best bands of all time imo.

Welshwabbit · 08/12/2015 20:58

Not a massive fan of Bono and his personal tax decisions, but I actually think he judged the moment well here.

lorelei9 · 08/12/2015 21:00

JumpandScore "Hands up if you'd heard of them a month ago and now they're playing with U2."

are you serious?! You might not have heard of them but plenty of others have. My friend lost 2 friends at that concert and there's an MNer here who knows one of the crew they travel with - in fact did someone's DH work with them? - at one point I was thinking that everyone was at the EODM concert!

I know a lot of people have issues with Bono but I think this was a good thing to do and nicer for EODM in a way because I know they said they would go back and play there, but it was maybe quite reassuring to go along, for the first time, for a short slot, before they eventually go back and do a full gig.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 08/12/2015 21:09

Op I agree with you, I find him loathsome but for me on this occasion, its so momentous, so brave of the Death Metal Band, so moving such a message to the terrorists and the people of Paris, I don't care about Bono I think its wonderful this band came back and promised to return.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 08/12/2015 21:11

Grin @ potatoe.

Lindt70Percent · 08/12/2015 21:59

Not generally a fan of Bono but I liked this. It must be very hard for that band to get back on stage again and having another band to support them through that is good to see.

CastaDiva · 08/12/2015 22:19

For an Irish person to admit that Bono isn't actually the Antichrist is now a radical position. Kicking him is a national sport - and I probably play it more often than camogie - but this seems an uncontroversially decent enough thing to do, whatever you think of his tax dodgery or conspicuous altruism. Also, perhaps the other three decided, and informed him afterwards? Grin

FithColumnist · 08/12/2015 22:45

Yadnbu, by any stretch of the imagnation. Bono is a prize cockend (also a shit musician).

SistersOfPercy · 08/12/2015 23:34

Agreed Lorelei. I've rather liked EODM since 'the boys bad news' was released.

Oddly it was only on the night of the bataclan that I discovered DS's friend is their guitar tech (he wasn't there that night).

As for Jesse looking terrified, EODM have played to huge crowds many times and I believe Jesse has joined Queens of the Stone Age on stage in the past as well. I suspect his look of fear was more him being somewhat overwhelmed at their first performance since the event and the associated feelings of witnessing something so horrific.

I don't like Bono particularly, but I did think it was a nice touch to let them play.

Isetan · 08/12/2015 23:57

FFS, really OP! Why don't you stop 'being safe' and go the whole hog, ISIS is a Bono creation and the Paris attacks were deliberately scheduled to boost his profile.

There's cynicism and then there's twattery and the line isn't as thin as you think it is.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/12/2015 00:04

Hands up if you'd heard of them a month ago and now they're playing with U2.

Er yes. I saw them support Foot Fighters once. They are part of the Queens of the Stone Age/Dave Grohl/Mark Lanegan happy family.

Shirkingfromhome · 09/12/2015 00:07

Ordinarily I'd agree with you OP but regardless of his own self-serving egotistical gains I think that TEODM and the majority of those at the gig benefited from this also. And that has to be a good thing.

As an aside I watched the interview with TEODM - I feel genuinely sorry for them. I had no idea they were actually caught up in it as I thought they'd be whisked away by management or someone.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/12/2015 00:07

Lorelei I haven't posted for ages but I used to be a regular on the RekordsRekords forum. I knew immediately who the fan from Southampton who was interviewed was.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/12/2015 00:11

Foo Fighters (obviously ) and for once I don't have any problem with Bono.
