FFS - I just ran the elderly landlord from the house (didn't know he was landlord)

And now he has told me I'm going to be evicted!

FFS - my life is a sitcom.

Is 'ran him out' a London expression, then? I've never heard of it before.

Want2bSupermum · 07/12/2015 14:52

I have done rental by the room before for tenants who were sharing. As the LL I treated the whole property as rented and always gave 24+ hours notice if I or someone else I had hired was stopping by.

Also, your LL is odd OP. I want to know my tenants. If I had been in the hallway and seen you I would have gone up and introduced myself as the LL. IME putting a name to the face actually helps the LL/tenant relationship. Bloody odd for them to be in the hallway and even odder that they didn't clarify who they were. Hate to jump to conclusions but I would be seriously worried about them being slumlords. Are the gas certs up to date and make sure the boiler isn't in your bedroom. Also check for how the property is registered. If it is a HMO they need a license. If you have paid a deposit it needs to be either registered with the deposit scheme or held by them. I think they have 30 days to register it (I don't do deposits so don't know the exact rules).

My cousin died in the 80s from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a dodgy boiler that a slumlord had johnny rigged to fix. The regulations are in place for a reason. If they are not following the rules I would take them up on their offer to terminate your lease.

EvaBING · 07/12/2015 15:21

Lol - only read to page 2, but bless your hearts - you're a witty bunch.

No! It was not a physical engagement! Basically, I came out of the room and the two of them were there and I was like 'Hi - can I help?' and they were like 'Who are you?'

Anyway!

I have texted the agent.

He replied first of all saying that he didn't know anything about this (I told him the man told me he was the landlord). But asked me to describe him. Which I did. He has just now replied with 'he's the previous landlord I do apologise he is quite old it was just a misunderstanding'.

Hmm

Gee, these old folks, eh?

So it wasn't the land lord?

Why was his sone with him in a house he doesn't own? And why did your house mate say he was the landlord?

EvaBING · 07/12/2015 15:28

And in terms of the nuances of the English Irish - to 'run' someone is to basically tell them to go away! The man told me to leave and since I'm paying 700 quid a month for a ROOM, I told him to leave!!!!

Sunnyshores · 07/12/2015 15:29

Just because the landlord is standing in his hallway and just because he didnt know who OP was (as she wouldnt tell him) it doesnt make him a slum landlord! There could be a million reasons why he was there and why he may not know her name: someone else manages it, he's senile.

So, there he is - lets say inspecting the smoke alarms or some other useful, valid purpose - and OP comes rushing out of her room, shouting who are you, get out , when ll reasonably asks who she is OP says "Im not telling you dear chap" or something far less polite .... LL thinks she's an unhinged nutcase who will bring trouble for him and other tenants; he has every right to want her out (legally). HMOs are difficult places to manage, they tend to attract a more temporary tenant, lots of tenant squables etc. It works best for everyone if the tenants can get along.

All OP can do is ask to meet him and apologise - with some good reason as to why she was so rude.

EvaBING · 07/12/2015 15:34

Apparently he was the landlord previously. There is a German couple here who have been here 3 years and he seemed to know them. I'm not sure whether they let him in or whether he has keys. The man was German too - so probably friendly with the couple.

Lord - now the couple are going to think I'm some sort of German hating rottweiler!

PS - the reason I know presume he is is German is because he was speaking German! Before you ask accuse

EvaBING · 07/12/2015 15:37

And I didn't attack the old man - I just asked him whether I could help him and HE ASKED ME WHO I WAS AND TOLD ME TO GET OUT.

Ah. The truth is always stranger than fiction.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/12/2015 15:37

Right, so another tenant told you the old guy is your landlord but it turns out he isn't and is a confused old man who used to own the place and still has access?!

Finding it hard to believe. Especially your new claim at being polite to him

Fugghetaboutit · 07/12/2015 15:38

He asked you to get out Hmm

Enjolrass · 07/12/2015 15:40

So he isn't the landlord, even though your house mate said he was. His son didn't point out that he wasn't the landlord .

And you 'bollcked' him while being polite?

He is confused and thinks he is the landlord and told you to get out?

The agency has no concerns the old landlord is trying to evict tenants?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/12/2015 15:41

Well that all adds up perfectly.

Most definitely not a case of back tracking to look sane

Indeed.

Blow by blow acccount ( since I know you cynical lot love details and I have nothing better to be doing)

I could hear voices outside my. No problems. Went out to toilet. A very old man (80) and a younger man (60) were there.

I asked them could I help. I'm only here a week and already have let the virgin media shite internet guy in and taken delivery of packages for other housemates.

So - think of me as the 'receptionist'.

Anyway - the older man asks me who I am. So then I ask him rather than telling him who I am WHO HE IS. Because, bare in mind - I have no clue who these dudes are! He then started shouting at me that he didn't know who I am and I will be evicted! So I quite sternly TOLD him to leave.

Anyway - the German couple from upstairs must have heard the commotion and came down and told me he is the landlord. So then I was like 'oh sorry - i didn't know what was going on' and the younger man sort of brought the old man away.

That is when I texted the agent.

Oh - and somewhere in between that dialogue - the younger man told me that the old man was here to check the fire alarms!

OP posts:
EssentialHummus · 07/12/2015 16:01

At this point, out of sheer curiosity, I'd be paying the Land Registry £3 to see who owns the bloody house.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/12/2015 16:09

So he is not the landlord, despite another tenant saying he is and his son saying he was there to check the fire alarms?! Honestly, sound incredibly believable.

And WHY did you have to ask them if they needed help?! Do you do that to everyone you meet in a place that does not belong to you and is occupied by others?

Then you refused to say who you are, asked who he was and then when it was clear (the eviction warning should've been an indicator) you 'firmly' told him to get out.

So, if people go to tell someone they'll be evicted the normal range response is to tell someone to get out, is it?

Flip. Don't ever get married

SenecaFalls · 07/12/2015 16:11

"To run someone out or off" is also a Southern US expression. Maybe handed down from Irish settlers?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 07/12/2015 16:14

I second what TripTrap said. That whole conversation was bizarre.

The younger man was not his son. Because the younger man was Mexican. Now - try to pluck feathers with that!

SenecaFalls - undoubtedly a legacy of us Irish. We're a lovely bunch lol. Until we're invaded.

TripTrap - if you encounter 2 randomers in your home - do you just nod and smile?
