FFS - I just ran the elderly landlord from the house (didn't know he was landlord)

And now he has told me I'm going to be evicted!

FFS - my life is a sitcom.

Unless he lives there too, the landlord can't put a clause in the lease that gives him access without notice. It's illegal.

TBH, if he's like that on access, won't tell you who he is when you ask and then will evict over something like this, you'll be having a lucky escape.

This kind of feudal attitude is why the private rental market desperately needs regulation or bad landlords putting out of business by building more affordable and social housing

Stillunexpected · 07/12/2015 12:53

I think you completely over-reacted. If you are renting a single room in a shared flat, you can expect to meet all kinds of people there as your flatmates may have family, friends or boyfriends around. If you greet everyone immediately with an aggressive "Who are you?" I don't think it will be just the landlord who wants you to move out.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 07/12/2015 12:53

You just moved in and you're questioning people about who they are and whether or not they have a right to be there? Did you think they were burglars?

Apiarist · 07/12/2015 12:54

Were you holding his collar and the seat of his trousers?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/12/2015 12:58

You sound a total joy to live with Grin

Why were you so questioning and confrontational? It's a shared house. Oh and you weren't 'forthcoming' about who you are because you 'pay a significant amount of money for the room'?! You're having a laugh

embarrasseddoesntcutit · 07/12/2015 13:00

ok, firstly, I don't care what your lease says, if your landlord doesn't live with by law (which supersedes your lease) he cannot enter the property without written notice.

Secondly, if you have an assured short hold teanncy they cannot evict you in the first 6 months.

If you need advice the moneysavingexpert forum is great.

VegetablEsoup · 07/12/2015 13:00

for some reason I imagine prince philip and charles visiting one of their halls

can you write them a note apologising for being forceful but at the same time make it clear that you feel very uncomfortable with strangers letting themselves in without notice.

Apiarist · 07/12/2015 13:01

Was it conversational but terse or a bit ranty shouty and sweary ?

Details please, OP Smile

Pancakeflipper · 07/12/2015 13:01

Well asking whom they are isn't much of a rollicking or a 'ran'

Low drama.

Stillunexpected · 07/12/2015 13:01

We don't actually know that they were there without notice anyway. It may have been arranged with one of the others in the house who didn't tell you.

Apiarist · 07/12/2015 13:03

I wonder if really it was 'who the fuck are you?' Pancake? Grin

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/12/2015 13:06

Why are people jumping in saying the landlord was breaking the law by being there?

He was in the house BUT NOT in the ops room (the bit she rents from him). He could very well have had a planned visit to either the property or another of the tenants without the op knowing about it.

She's only just moved in and nobody has to notify her if the landlord is going to see a specific tenant

EssentialHummus · 07/12/2015 13:07

I'm not sure that the landlord needs to give notice to access communal areas where each tenant rents a room rather than the house - I can't point you to the legislation but was advised as much by a property lawyer when I had an issue with one of my tenants in a similar set-up. Worth checking.

If he/they want to evict you, they'll need to give notice, and they won't be able to do much if you're in the fixed term of your contract. How do you feel about living there otherwise? Do you want to leave?

Pumpkinpositive · 07/12/2015 13:07

I'm getting old. I just don't understand people's OPs anymore. Sad

YABU, OP. Your landlord was also BU (unless you had him up against the wall by the scruff of the neck).

But why on earth is your first instinct on hearing voices in a shared house you've just moved into, to confront people demanding to know who they are? What were you expecting: for them to fess up that they were actually there on the rob?? Confused

I think a reconstruction is needed.

maybe the Landlord is a ghost, he used to be the landlord many years ago and doesn't realize he died. Now every 7th of December he haunts the stairways evicting anyone he bumps into.

Tneconni · 07/12/2015 13:25

Our lease allows the landlord to access any part of the house without notice

No it doesn't. LL's can put whatever they like into an agreement but it doesn't make it enforceable.

ftm123 · 07/12/2015 13:25

So to be clear, was this all verbal or was it physical? For some reason your post gives me a mental image that you chased them out with a crowbar.

Ignoring the rights and wrongs I think you need to grovel, give some explanation for being jumpy and try to smooth things over. If you move on you may need a reference, and if you can part on speaking terms it will be so much easier.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 07/12/2015 13:27
Hmm
Gruntfuttock · 07/12/2015 13:29

OP, why would you not be pleasant and polite to people, unless and until they give you a reason not to be?

Maybe it wasn't the landlord, Harry and Marv from the Home Alone movies must be pretty elderly by now, could it have been them?
