The lodger keeps changing the fairy lights setting on my Xmas tree...

I've had my Xmas tree up since the last weekend in November, at the request of my two DS's (5 and 3). Also at their request the fairy lights on said tree are set to 'twinkling' mode.

I also have a temporary lodger. In so many ways he's a lovely man, and a very welcome bit of adult company in the house since my ex-H left us two Christmases ago....
HOWEVER. Every single time I leave him alone in the house (or go up to bed before him of an evening), he takes it upon himself to switch the fairy lights off twinkling to just being plain on all the time. Fair enough, maybe he hates the flashing (he's not epileptic, i did check!) and when hes alone in the house he should be able to do whatever he likes. BUT he never cycles through the twelve settings on the lights to put them back how I want them for when I return.

It's such a stupid thing, but it's really beginning to give me the rage every morning having to set the lights back to how my children want them on MY tree in MY house. Surely he could just switch them off at the plug if he doesn't want to see them twinkling?! I don't want to fall out with him, but my current level of rage over this tiny stupid thing makes me feel like I can't even speak to him about it right now. And leaving a note asking him not to touch them seems daft. AIBU?! Do I just need to grow up and get over it? I fear I'm just a little unused to sharing my house space with other people and im being a mardy Christmas grouch. So Mumsnet jury... would this annoy you too or am I a dick?! Grin

Very nice Clancy! WineStar

Asteria36 · 07/12/2015 00:42

i would torch the tree if I had to sit and watch it twinkling all night. Give the children one of those minging colour changey mini fibre optic trees to put somewhere else in the house so they can get their magical Christmassy feel without burning your poor lodger's retinas.

SquinkiesRule · 07/12/2015 07:59

Oh I hate the twinkling too. I worked nights on Saturday. Once we turned all the main hall lights off around midnight, I had to turn the Chrstmas tree to just on lights no twinkle as it was doing a number on my eyes. I should have turned it off all together as it resulted in a massive migraine and a wasted day off and an early to bed night last night.
When you leave maybe turn them off altogether, they may be giving him a headache.

Mehitabel6 · 07/12/2015 08:23

I was in a house last week with twinkling lights and was pleased to get out- it was giving me a headache. If I lived there I would certainly switch it with every opportunity.

ArmfulOfRoses · 07/12/2015 08:54

Is your lodger an elf?

BassAce · 07/12/2015 09:19

Oh my goodness Armful... now you mention it, he is /very/ short. And has a beard. I will have to surreptitiously check for pointed ears next time he's watching TV!!! Grin

I also had no idea twinkling lights were such a contentious issue. Am ALMOST beginning to feel bad....

RhiWrites · 07/12/2015 09:20

Could you make it the kids job to turn them to twinkling?

I couldn't cope with twinkling either. Flashing lights give me migraines.

reni2 · 07/12/2015 09:21

I had no idea either, I assumed most people must like them, they are so common in shops and on streets, I thought I'm the odd one. High streets take note!

FreshsatsumaforDd · 07/12/2015 09:24

Our lights reset when turned off at the wall. It is possible that yours do too.

YABU as twinkling lights are a nightmare Grin

TheCuttingRdge · 07/12/2015 12:53

I hate twinkling lights. I always have the fight the urge to change them when I go to someone else's house....if I was paying rent I'm not sure I could fight it though.

KakiFruit · 07/12/2015 13:04

YABU. I like twinkling lights but can understand why someone wouldn't. If you have a clear message that he finds them annoying, why would you want to subject him to them? Just leave them on solid, and when he's out the kids can have the twinkling.

squoosh · 07/12/2015 13:54

I hate twinkling lights, they make me feel so on edge.

squoosh · 07/12/2015 13:54

So if he's a good lodger by and large I'd just swallow my frustration.

SuckingEggs · 07/12/2015 14:00

How can there be TWELVE lighting options?! How? HOW?

crispytruffle · 07/12/2015 14:35

I like the twinkling lights. I alternate depending on my mood. I think that since it is your tree and you put it up you decide on the mode the lights are on. My lights do not reset when switched off but perhaps yours do as someone else has mentioned.

SuckingEggs · 07/12/2015 14:54

Mermaid, Xmas Shock

Mine stay on. They do nothing but emit constant light behind the times

AndNowItsSeven · 07/12/2015 18:27

It's not November 🎄🎄🎄

mintoil · 07/12/2015 18:31

XH and I used to fall out over this. Twinkling flashing lights give me a dreadful headache. I imagine if you ask him he will tell you that's what the problem is.

Would it be so awful for the DC to accept static lights? It would be a real kindness to your poor lodger.

RavioliOnToast · 07/12/2015 18:32

I'd just get over it until after Xmas to be honest. It's not that far away and you'll be taking it down, what a lot of fuss.
