to think painting with Reception is obviously going to get messy?

DD got no Golden Time for attempting a spot of body-art during their art lesson today.

Admittedly she has found it difficult to settle in and her behaviour has been tough going, but she's 4. 4 year olds are going to get paint everywhere!

AIBU to be miffed?

Depends, if she'd been painting herself, was asked to stop by the teacher and then continued on the teacher would be completely right to sanction her. Difficult to know without having the details.

Who did she paint?

There are significant numbers of parents at my DC's school who get very, very irate about children coming home with paint on them.

Even I don't have the full details. The evidence suggests she has been painting her arms.

I couldn't give a stuff about paint. Her uniform is cheap crap anyway. That's what the washing machine is for!

That's how I feel about paint on uniform (and if the paint gets there at school, then the school have no business judging parents for failing to wash the damn stuff out) .

But just wondered if she had painted a friend...which might explain why the teacher was stricter.

I presume when she first started doing it she was told to stop? 4-year-olds can be expected to understand "no".

Depends on if she was just painting her arms, painting everyone else's arms/faces/painting on walls in the style of Banksy. Yes it gets messy, but, I'd imagine she'd probably been told not go and then carried on.

Blue poster paint is one of the most difficult things to clean up ever!

I honestly don't know. All I know is that she got no Golden Time, and that made her sad.

I wonder if she did paint a friend. I must ask her in the morning and then see if I need to phone on Monday.

Maybe she painted herself, then walked to the sinks to wash her hands touching everything I can see how that might exasperate a reception teacher on a Friday afternoon.

Her hands were actually very clean for a reception child, you might be onto something there!

Your DD should have listened if the teacher told her to stop, but really... You don't give a room full of 4yo's paint and not expect a decent mess to clean afterwards. The teacher didn't exactly set her or the kids up for success on this.

It's just Golden Time, by Monday this incident will be water under the bridge for her. Just tell her to listen to her teacher next time...and maybe call to make sure there's not other behavior issues going on that you need to have a talk about.

When DD was in nursery, she and 3 friends did this exact same thing. They painted their hands, arms, jumpers and were just starting on faces when stopped by a member of staff.

All 4 children were put on "Mr grumpy" but the nursery teacher privately told me she thought it very funny and the children very creative, although she couldn't be seen to condone/encourage such behaviour in school.

I suspect very much it may be the same in OP's case.

Yes, I just said that if she felt sad because she got no GT, she just has to make sure she gets it all this week.

I don't know why you are asking if you should be miffed when you don't even know what happened. If your child told you she had lost Golden Time, presumably you have seen her since this happened so why not ask her then for the details?

My daughter did similar aged just 4 and having been to a gallery that weekend where she'd discovered impressionist painting. Her teacher asked why she'd done it, and after a rather thorough explanation took a photo of the outcome in case DD "turned out to be the next Monet".

My mum taught primary school kids. One group of kids she had managed to remove one of the doors from the toilet cubicle. It wasn't screwed in - it was a loop or a ring on the wall, with the door having a stick hanging down that dropped into the loop (iyswim). There was one at the top and one at the bottom of the door. She thinks the lad didn't lock the door and stuck his foot out to stop it opening, but stuck his foot underneath somehow and the door just lifted off.
Anyway, when she went to investigate and found the lad standing there holding the door, she got the giggles. She and another teacher sent the kid away and tried to rehang the door. Only they rehung it in such a way that mum was trapped in the cubicle, sitting on the infant sized toilet, both of them laughing so much they couldn't even fix the problem. All the boys that came in to use the toilets were sent away to use the girls loos while it was fixed. All of them got the impression that something REALLY AWFUL had happened in there because their teachers were so angry they couldn't even talk and no one was allowed in there - the rumours from kids (and parents) over the next few days were colourful! I think there's more of the trying not to laugh while dealing with an incident than anyone realises, especially the children!
