AIBU?

AIBU to think there's no decent Christmas Presents to buy under £15

And there aren't a lot over £15 either!

I've been on all the usual websites. Amazon, Firebox, Iwoot, etc etc and they're all selling the same unimaginative plastic (et al) tat.

It's just total tat!

FFS

Or am I being unreasonable (hopefully!) and you can point me in the direction of some decent, reasonably priced, Christmas gifts under £15 (ish).

(Specifically, things that are fun on the day to play with, but aren't just total pap)

TY

Huge jigsaw to do together, a game - adapt some you might have already, eg Pictionary is much better if you ditch the board, draw on flipchart paper, and play in teams, or use modelling clay - have a Fimo modelling competition after lunch? a paperback for everyone, and something useful like a torch, novelty cookie cutters, socks...
Our extended family do presents from charity shops and pound shops for adding to main presents - Poundland has some good games. My parents always want books so the charity bookshop does well out of me.

I went into TK Max today and they had some lovely stuff ( well I thought it was lovely). Lovely sets of socks, gorgeous tasteful china mugs. and some lovely china mugs in a tin for younger kids ( £4), lovely Italian soap bars etc. nice book sets for kids . I was amazed how reasonably priced they were. The things I've listed are probably not very imaginative but they were just so nice, I would like to receive a lot of them myself.

I went to sainsburys yetsedray and got a gorgeous red hanbag for £12 as a gift and there was a chalkboard globe for £10 that I liked.

Rapidoh is a good board game. Simple for everyone to play and lots of fun. I also like Articulate but it does appeal to gobshites!

Real mice for the children (offer in tesco) and robo fish

No sure what real mice are- I assume not live mice

But the robofish are really crap- they bombed last year as a Christmas items and were being flogged off for a couple of £ each in many shops earlier in the year. Novelty value for a 3 year old but not much to offer an older child.

popcorn makers always a success for older kids and teens, only £15 and a proper gift to unwrap, and it works. My 10 yr old wants one badly

You just need a bag of popcorn and some oil. I assume that you have a pan with a lid. Another top car boot sale item along with chocolate fountains and foot spas. They are 5 minute novelty gift

Frebreeze that's true but remember Mr Frosty? Everyone has ice and a grater but that's not the point.

Anyway I agree about the tat. The trick is to choose the right tat for the right recipient. I love a cheap bath gift set as I have bath with bubbles everyday. My SIL would roll her eyes but loves nail stuff which equally I would consider a wasted gift.

YABU. If you're just going to the 'usual suspects' and looking for things that someone else reckons are good gifts, then of course it'll all look like tat. I can think of tonnes of things I'd actually like for under £15 that aren't tat, but you need to think about what the recipient would actually like, and that probably isn't a pre-packed gift on a 3 for 2.

There are some nice things around, whatever your budget.

But you're not going to find them in the large stores which are packed to the rafters with shitty toiletries sets, acrylic jumpers and cheap nasty "novelty" gifts.

Shop local, independent. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants a Baylis and Harding gift set or a paid of socks with reindeer on them.

Oh and a suggestion - Oxfam have little packs of games for playing around the table. sort of playing card sized. Various different things from word games to quizzes to charades and so on. Think they're £4.

It depends I suppose. We don't tend to buy novelty stuff but but things the person will like and use so that it doesn't cause clutter.

So, for instance, my MIL is in her 80's and has everything. She does, however, love puzzle books so we have bought her some of those and some nice chocolate that she likes.

Another vote for TK Maxx here.I rarely used to go in find it too much of a rummage. But it's become my go to place for gifts. Some lovely top quality candles for far less than a lot of other shops.

Notonthehighstreet is very overpriced. I’ve found similar stuff on Etsy for much cheaper.

IMO gift sets etc which are presented as Christmas gifts are overpriced. I’ve found if you go for stuff which isn’t branded that way it seems to be much cheaper. I’ve bought my MiL some really nice gin goblets on amazon, 9.99 for a pair. Will be getting her a couple of other bits on top as well.
